Do you mean a programm that filters out unsubscribe-messages *before*
they are send to all members of this club? I think that's a very good
solution for the unsubscribe-problems. (Is there also such a solution

No, I don't think that we should change the name "Disney-Comics" into
something else. Now we're getting members who think that this club is
about Disney-animation (etc), but I think we'll get lots of
NON-Disney mail about comics if we leave out the name "Disney" in the
title. So, whatever name we choose, there will always be people who
think the club is about something else.
And it is *not* said that people unsubscribe because they thought the
club was about other Disney-subjects. It's also possible that they
expected *other discussions* about comics than the ones we have here.
Maybe they think there's too much "backstage"-talking here, or maybe
they think the discussion-level is too high. Maybe they only wanted
to talk about Donald Duck and nothing more.
My vote would go to what FREDRIK wrote today: Subscribing people in
two steps. Sending them a message first which tells what this club
is about, and then subscribe them after they agreed. I think that's a
good way to filter out a lot of people who otherwise would have
subscribed to the wrong club.

difficult. But I'm glad you think you might find another way to clear it up.

sounds good. Also the idea somebody had of "subscribing" people in a TWO
step method, first with a message describing exactly what they're getting
into... that's a good idea as well.
As for changing the name, I think "Disney Comics" doesn't give some
"comic-illiterate" people (which is most Americans) enough pause to consider
the terminology. There's a great deal of confusion here in America as to
exactly what a comic STRIP is compared to a comic BOOK... or what "cartoons"
are (animated? or political cartoons? or what?)
I might suggest a name that would get their attention slightly more
focused is "Disney Comic Books"... but then, if there are Internet
directories that are giving the false info about the contents of this
newsgroup, no name change is going to help. "Disney Comic Books" would also
ignore the subject of newspaper strips. "Disney Comic Books and Newspaper
Strips"? Too long, eh?
I would STRONGLY speak against dropping the name of Disney from the
title, until Disney orders you to, which from the looks of the number of
groups using that name, would seem unlikely. To make our title something to
do with "Ducks" would get hunters or birdwatchers calling in, then "please
unsubscribe me"ing. And to use the name "Barks" as the key word would
eliminate anyone who is not completely cognoscente of that SECRET
information that there are people like Barks or Gottfriedson writing/drawing
these comics, and that they are not all done by "Walt Disney", which I fear
most of the Unwashed Masses are still lead to believe. The knowledge of the
names of these creators, even Barks, is VERY esoteric knowledge to an
incredibly select group. In Europe, ALL comic fans and a great percentage of
the public know who Barks is. In America, not even many of the average comic
book collectors (i.e.- super-hero fanboys) have the slightest inkling who
Barks is. So using his name would hide us too well. How many of us knew who
Barks was from the first? I loved his stuff for nearly 20 years before I
learned his name.
I think your new screening software plus a two-step subscibing
method would clear up most of the trouble. Hm?

language they were written in? It's impossible to say the Egmont versions
are not the "original editions", but I never think in those terms. I think
that the Egmont editions are the "preliminary editions" and when Gladstone
prints them, that is definitely the "OFFICIAL edition". It's hard to see it
any other way when it's not until Gladstone prints them that they are
lettered or colored well, or that I'm certain that my script is used. But
now I see the Italians also doing what seem to be beautiful versions, and
perhaps the Greeks as well. But still, the Gladstones are the one and only
OFFICIAL editions, presented under my scrutiny (except when I goof up) and
presented in the original language in the country of the characters' "birth".

I think the name of the list is not necessarily a recognisable name for
newcomers. The newcomers already found their way to the list because of
pointers in different places. I'd like an inside-name.

I'm not in favour of a name change. It seems only natural that anyone
looking for any reference to Disney comics in a mailing list, ftp site, or
WWW page is going to use Disney as the keyword in a search. If we're happy
with the present clientele, then that isn't a concern, of course. But, if
we want additional, genuinely interested folks to subscribe, removing the
word "Disney" from the title is going to make us harder to find.

Hi, gang. Here's my first attempt to reach the Disney digest
from my new/old Williams E-Mail address. I'm a senior now... but as
clueless about what's going on around here as if I were a freshman.
Shows you what a year in Scotland will do, lads.
The big news for today is that since Vicar didn't draw Hard
Haid Moe correctly for my D-story featuring him, my editor at Egmont
and I decided to give the hillbilly in my duck tale a new name, which is
to be "Abbott McGoon" (a nod to Al Capp in there, of course). The
REAL Moe will eventually show up in another one of my stories,
although I haven't really worked its plot out yet.
Why I chose the new name will be evident when Gladstone prints
the story, although that could be years from now. Egmont will be
printing it this fall.
I've got lots of things to tell all of you, now that I have
REGULAR E-mail access again. More tomorrow.

Scrooge in Holland (Lo$ 11)

The new Dutch Donald Duck Extra was in the shops yesterday, containing Don's
Life of Scrooge chapter 11! This gave me a very enjoyable evening.
I think I don't need to talk more about whether or not I liked the story.
A few remarks:
- I made a quiz (in Dutch) about this story. The task is to find as much
references to Barks stories as possible. One condition in this quiz is,
not to ask any question to Don about it. (When will the Gladstone comic
be in the shops, containing all the answers of my quiz?)
- I guess the colouring is the standard Egmont colouring. The maps have very
strange colours (Saudi Arabia appears to be flooded, for instance).
- The Dutch used the 3-part version: pages 9 and 17 have a big splash panel.
Page 9 has no caption, though.
- Scrooge saw some VERY strange wind mills in Holland! I have never seen
mills like this before...
In the Dutch translation, the newspaper in the same panel is the
"Haarlemsche Courant" ("Newspaper of Haarlem"). Haarlem is the city where
GP (and Oberon) used to reside for many years. Only recently they moved
to Amsterdam.
- Don, did you *have* to include the Gilded Man? Why include references to
DONALD stories, where Scrooge was never involved? Or was this an idea of
the editor, just like the square egg reference in chapter 3?
- Donald kicking Scrooge on page 23 was a nice touch. Literally.

I screw-up please tell me and I'll do better next time. I have really
enjoyed reading everything you all have had to say. My Physics teacher
has recently proposed a question to me that I do not know the answer to,
and now I am calling upon the great wisdom of this mailing-list to answer
it. Did $crooge have a Scottish accent in the original comic books, or is
his accent something that he acquired in his cartoons?
Also I wanted to commit on the name change and unsubscribers. As
a recent subscriber I think it is fair to say that anyone who subscribed
not knowing what this mailing-list was about; it was made perfectly clear
in the first message received by all subscribers. In that message it
also tells people how to unsubscribe. I feel that those who are
unsubscribing in the wrong manner are doing so out of ignorance because
