though I can only hope we run into each other. There are always a few people
that I know are there, but that I never see, and I won't have a place to sit
this year, so it's tough to set up a meeting place.

Nice try. I doubt it. Gladstone is just cheap and lazy. You are
assuming here that Gladstone actually sells ads successfully.

"Duck Daze" is disturbing. And, yes, people have been talking about this
one for a couple of years now as the show was actually set to begin last
fall until Gargoyles became such a big hit. Ask David Gerstein about it
someday. He is a martyr to the cause, having been kicked off of the
Disney Afteroon mailing list because of it. =)

At the risk of repeating myself: WHAT LETTERS COLUMN?!? There probably
won't be a big gathering of letters column regulars only because there

Hi everyone...

I'm back from Erlangen and it's time for some infos, updates and
comments.

RE: DON at the Con
Although I met Don some years back, briefly, this time was actually
the first I *really* met and talked to him. He is, as many of you
know, incredibly friendly and tries to please everyone - which in a
place filled with thousands of comic-book-fans, reporters et al. can
quickly become an impossible task. I made a brief interview for an
Austrian radio-program with him, but failed to meet again to do an
in-depht interview for later use (magazines etc.) I have to check
what's actually on the tape, but if I find some of it of general
interest I'll post it here or send it to Per for integration in the
archives. I showed the Burmese comic to Don, which he found quite
amusing (and not all that badly drawn).

About Disney-comics in the German area in general:
after indoctrinating the German public in the 80ies about the ART of
Comics, the publishers and journalists finally brought a big number
of (young) grown-ups back to reading comics. But, not all that
surprising, the new readers dont buy the ART-Comics (Eisner,
Pratt...) but tend to take stuff that's familiar to them...
And as they all grew up by Disney-comics, they buy the "grown-up"
versions of their childhood-days literature, like the "Barks-Library"
(they also buy ten-thousands of Asterix-Dialect-Editions - from
southern Swabian to northern "Platt-Deutsch").
Ehapa (Egmont) anticipated this trend and thought, if "names" sell,
let's bring forth some more "names": so now you have a steady flow of
"Disney: Don Rosa - Onkel Dagobert" - albums (#11 in december with a
"square-egg"-cover, #12 april '97 with a Srooge/Donald/shark-
undersea-cover) and "Disney: Neue Abenteuer der Ducks von William van
Horn" (i.e. "New Adventures of the Ducks..." #3 in november).
Furthermore there are Specials like a Christmas-Sp. in october with
the "names" Barks, Rosa, van Horn, Vicar, Gulbranson printed BIG
on the cover... Also, BL will reach #28 in April, BL-Special-Scrooge #3 in march,
BL-Special-Donald Duck #16 in january. So, with the usual flow of
newsstands-stuff and this book/comic-store albums,
German/Austrian/Swiss/Liechtenstein/Luxembourg Duck-fans
wont run dry...

Well, as this observsation got quite long, I'll quit now (and just
add a short PS). I'm BTW still looking for infos on how to submit
comics and stories to Egmont, any info would be greatly appreciated.

PS: I recently found a German book called "Reisefuehrer Entenhausen"
("Travel-Guide Duckburgh") in a sale-box. It's unofficial and not
really any good, but I'll post more info, if somebody's interested.

Hi!

I'm beginning to like Rota's stories too! I've often heard you
folks talking about Rota, but I never really paid any attention to his
stories. Only now, after reading his latest Egmont story in last week's
Norwegian Donald Duck & Co, I began recognizing his style.
This latest story (at least, I'm assuming it is his latest. It's coded
D95139) is pretty good! I saw in the database that Rota hasn't made a lot
of stories! Why hasn't he?

I also noticed that in almost every country, the "Life of
Scrooge" is being reprinted in albums in 1996/1997. Is that also part
of those certain international Disney-licensee politics? What do these
'politics' contain further? Can you give us some more examples, David?

Hello everyone,

I was in Erlangen, too, and I want to say that it was really great. One
highligth was to meet Don Rosa. It was very interesting to see how fast
he can make so good pictures. But it was also great to see Freddy Milton
in action. He made wonderful drawings. First he though about the picture
he should draw for you, then he made a sketch/outline (I found multiple
meanings in the dictionary - german: Skizze) with pencil, and then he
drawed it with felt pen. A picture of him took about 20 minutes of time
(with a queue of 5 people before me I had to wait about two hours). Uli
Schroeder - a german Disney drwaer - was also in Erlangen, but his
pictures wasn't a quarter as good as Don Rosa and Freddy Miltons were.

Regarding the Comic Con International in San Diego....
Perhaps we should meet at a restaurant somewhere downtown?
Does anyone have a schedule of events? Maybe dinner on the Fourth?

In the list of Disney character names in different languages
there are different entries for Spanish in Argentina, in Spain, and in
Mexico, and sometimes different names for the same character are
used in different countries. Jonathan Markoff tells me that according
to Arthur De Wolf's pages on Disney comics in various countries Mexico
and Argentina don't make their own Disney comics, but just get them
from Colombia.

So it seems like some other division of language areas should be used
than the one currently used. Spanish in Spain and Spanish in
Colombia? Is that enough? But then I don't know which of the names
in the file now is the true Colombian version, and which is not. (And
what to do about that other name.)

I'd appreciate help from anyone who knows something about the Spanish
names. Please tell me, and I'll send you (in private mail) a list of
the Spanish names now in the list for comments!

Didn't we discuss this a few months ago? I seem to remember that someone
said (or was that in a private mail to me?) that Mexico and Argentina USED
to make their own Disney comic books. If this is so, it becomes a question
of whether the list should include historical information as well. (While
I maintained that list, I was somewhat ambivalent as to this. I did
include a very old German name of Donald Duck (Schnatterich), but not
corresponding Dutch and Swedish names. (By the way, Per: I chanced to
notice that the language codes are no longer included when searching the
names database on the Web site. It looks somewhat confusing with five
"Donald Duck" and four "Pato Donald" in the same list with no explanation
whatever.))

Speaking of Spain, it is interesting to note that the names are not even
the same WITHIN Spain. I am going there late this summer, and in order to
polish up my virtually useless Spanish, I decided to read through my few
Spanish Disney comics. It turned out that those from 1987 are from a
different publisher than the one from 1989, and at least Mickey's name
differs between the two (Miki and Mickey, respectively).

I'll be back with a detailed report after I return from Spain.
