Hi everyone,
I made it to my comics shop today and what did I find? _6_ albums waiting for
me. 2 WVH, 2 Carl Barks, and 2 of the value IN COLOR type ones. I could only
afford half of them. So I went with one of the In Colors and the two WVHs.
The rest will wait until my fund replenish themselves for next month, when the
same thing will probably happen again.

Van Horn Album Error

I just want people to know that there's a small error in the second volume of
the William Van Horn albums which just came out. The two-page story "Call Off
the Wild" was indeed drawn by Van Horn, but it was written by me. It's not
exactly a big deal, but I did want to set the record straight. Fortunately,
towards the back of the album there's an Index of Bill's stories and that
correctly identifies me as the writer of that story and several others.
In the two Van Horn albums that are coming out next month, I should have three
more stories: "Sky-High Hi-Jinks" (a 12-pager); "The Billion Bean Stampede" (a
13-pager); and "The Amazon Queen" (a 24-pager.)
By the way, I know it makes Bill wince to look at his early stories when he
was still refining his approach to the characters. Personally, though, I
rather enjoy the looser style. For me, it's a real pleasure to see these
stories printed and colored so well. Gladstone's printing was pretty horrible
during it's first run. Since then, Gladstone has made major advances in it's
printing and production abilities--and it shows here. The coloring scheme in
these albums is based on the coloring Van Horn did for the original albums,
but it's been beautifully enhanced on the computer by the ever-wonderful Sue
Daigle-Leach. (Hi, Sue!.)
Sorry if I'm gushing here. I'm just really glad to see these albums get
published.

A couple of people have asked recently about the unpublished, "Somewhere in
Nowhere." I said I'd let them know what's going on with this story as soon as
possible. It now appears that I won't be able to say anything about this for
quite awhile. I'm not being coy. It's just not my news to announce. So, I'll
just have to wait like everyone else and see what happens.

speaking ;-) Keep up the good work... and like others on this list, I
share the 'wisdom' that "I know how it is" from recent experience,
having graduated from high school only six years ago myself!
I recall how long those graduation exercises went on every
morning... how many times we practiced "all rising" when a certain key
note speaker spoke a certain key note ("And now, I present you with..."
- and of course, when the speaker actually said it on the big day,
everyone rose in the most topsy-turvy, uncoordinated mess you ever =
saw).

I also enjoyed your updated self-made art gallery. The pic of
Scrooge and Goldie weighing the gold ("read it and weep") was =
especially
funny. While inspecting your site I also saw an *old* drawing I had
missed before - the one where Goldie found one of Scrooge's money sacks
had been making her feet cold in bed. ROTFL!
Gawrsh, a lot of things happened during that *one* month on the
White Agony claim, huh? ;-)=20

Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone! Graduation is exciting, fun and kind of scary all at once!
For those who are interested, I'll be attending the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire in the fall, and will remain living at home. I'm one duck(fan) who's not too eager to leave the nest! ;-) I don't know what I'll major in yet, but probably something either English/writing and/or computer related. Maybe. :-)

I recently got the new all-cartoon channel, Toon Disney. I know this isn't an animation ML, so I won't go on for long about it, but it's really quite nice. I have yet to see DuckTales, but many of my other favorite shows are on, including old Donald cartoons. (Mickey gets a lot more attention than my feathered friends, though. :-( No offense to Mickey fans, but I want my duck cartoons!!!)
Getting even more on-topic...I read somewhere (probably several somewheres) that Barks worked on Donald animation before moving to comics. Does anyone know the details? Cartoon titles? Dates? Anything?
Also, I noticed that Ludvig VonDrake showed up on the Bonkers show in a guest slot as the title character's doctor. (Bonkers is a mediocre cartoon about a bobcat policeman)
So why does Disney allow him in cartoons, but not in Rosa's stories? He has to sneak the poor old fellow in, (Little Something Special), and couldn't even put him on the family tree. No fair! I like Ludvig!
Well, before I go back off-topic, I'll shut up for now.
Oh, no, wait, Disney doesn't like us saying "shut up". So, uh...I'll cease communicating verbally for the moment. ;-)

scads of GREAT characters Byron won't let us touch. Why, there's
no telling how many wonderful Emil Eagle stories have been
stillborn as a result of his unspeakable policies. I think you
should write him a letter RIGHT NOW, and tell him what you think
of this terrible situation. And when you do, be sure to mention
that Bucky Bug is one of the characters that should be liberated.

To follow up on my message last week, I went to my local comics shop and had
$24 of Gladstone books (three: WDC&S, Uncle Scrooge and another Comics in
Color). Does Gladstone really expect to survive this way? I've told my comics
shop that I am going to stop buying the newest albums, all of which have
stories that have been reprinted several times and are clearly just slapped
together.
Here's the problem. I am a comics fan. Not just Disney or the ducks. I buy
DC books, independents and some Marvels. But I do keep myself within a budget.
Buy Gladstone publishing monthly books at such hig prices, it's driving them
right off my buy list.
And I want to support the company. I understand the hardships they face in
staying around, as well as things like buying press time for their books. But
somehow they're going to have to divy up their production throughout the month
or drive other fans away.
I'd hate to see it. There are few of us left.

:-D That's about it went at my school, too! Eventually the principal gave up trying to get us to stand in unison. We managed a mediocre performance when the real thing came! :-)

Hee hee. I technically captioned that picture something like "Imagine for a moment there'san alternate universe where Scrooge and Goldie are married...". I don't think Scrooge had
bags and bags of money lying around at White Agony, so I was looking at a post-1920 time
frame, hypothetically. But forget the details. I just liked the gag! ;-)

during it's first run. Since then, Gladstone has made major advances in it's

these albums is based on the coloring Van Horn did for the original albums,
but it's been beautifully enhanced on the computer by the ever-wonderful Sue
Daigle-Leach. (Hi, Sue!.)>>
I agree. It's great to see these early efforts receive coloring that enhances
them, as opposed to detracting from them. While Van Horn's style is not so
detailed that indifferent coloring and reproduction severely injures his
stories, he is every bit as deserving of a "first-class" presentation as Carl
or Don.
But oh, how I wish there could have been a one or two-page essay on Van Horn,
the man and his work.

DUCKTALES has yet to be added to the ToonDisney schedule. I imagine it will
be added once its current syndicated run (or re-run) is terminated.
For the record, other Disney TV shows on TonnDisney include: GUMMI BEARS,
WUZZLES, DARKWING DUCK, BONKERS, ALADDIN, GOOF TROOP, RESCUE RANGERS, THE
LITTLE MERMAID, SHNOOKUMS AND MEAT, TIMON AND PUMBAA. Some series have more
of a presence on The Disney Channel than they do on ToonDisney, while others
(e.g. DARKWING and BONKERS) have entirely shifted to TD.

that Barks worked on Donald animation before moving to comics. Does anyone
know the details? Cartoon titles? Dates? Anything?>>
