Okaaayyyyyy...let me get this straight:
I pay $6.95 for a comic when most of the other comics in the USA cost
$1.95 to $2.95 and for this I should be kissing Gladstone's toenails.
The comic in question used to have a circulation of over 1,000,000
copies per issue. Today it sells less than 10,000 copies. And I am
supposed to proclaim Gladstone the most successful publisher of Disney
comics ever.
I see a publisher that blames their woes on every thing under the sun:
kids don't read today, the bad newstand market, the poor direct sales
market, rising production costs, the Disney Company is being
unreasonable, etc etc ad nauseum.
I see a company that only whines, moans and plays the victim and expects
the readers to feel sorry for them. I see people in the company that,
outwardly at least, appear hostile to any outsider that wishes the
company to do better. This company does not welcome other's opinions on
how to approve their product. (Why are these people on a Disney comics
mailing list, then?)
I see a company that has had drastic circulation drops the last few
years. I do not see the company doing anything to change that. I see the
company publicly staying the course doing what failed miserably before,
and expecting the fans to accept that these things are not the company's
fault. How could these things be the company's faults? The company is
wonderful and cares about Disney comics!
PHOOEY!
It's stinks that Gladstone's circulation figures are so poor. But part
of the blame has to fall squarely on Gladstone's shoulders. If things
are so bad the way things are done now, THEN DON'T DO THAT ANYMORE! If
putting all your trust in the direct market means that circulation takes
a nosedive, then use some other means to distribute Gladstone comics. I
don't have any pity for people that say, "It's not my fault! I'm a
victim! Take care of me at your expense. Feel sorry for me!" Why should
I feel sorry for a business that knew the risks of doing business when
it started? If all Gladstone is going to do is whine and blame their
problems on other outside factors, then maybe it is time for a company
that takes charge and offers no lame excuses to take the Disney license.
Because Gladstone's current approach will just erode the circulation
numbers further, and make Disney comics even more invisible to the real
world than they are now!
Then again, that is just my opinion. And I assume we are allowed to
offer opinions on this mailing list now. If not, maybe this list should
just consist of press releases from Disney publishers.

contributions to this list during the last six months, and what did I find?
Tales of woe? Moans and whines? Nope! I found opinions and comments on
other subjects. Go through it yourself and send every quote that fits your
description to this mailing-list. I'm sure it'll be a very short mail...

I have only been a reader of Gladstone's comics for a few years, but still
I have witnessed many attempts to please old and new readers. They've tried
new formats, new titles, hard covers, slick covers, thin covers, cheap
comics (99 cents!!!), and yet the new readers didn't turn up. I think the
staff at Gladstone have done a great job, and I truly hope they will have
the chance to continue doing so.

Sure, but he's only been doing his job. A job he gets paid for, and he sure
wouldn't do it without pay. The same thing probably holds for the staff at
Gladstone. They do their jobs 'cause *they* think it's funny. I can't
believe they're all doing it just to please us readers.

but anyway, their job is to publish Disney comics. They volunteered to do

weekly, you get some 3D-glasses (red/blue or red/green, wonder what's
best?) and then you can read a 3D-comic story (in denmark it was a Van
Horn) but here it was a Marco Rota-story, which was btw, the only
artist-style I can recognize in those mag's apart from=20
good ol' Barks of course... There's also a great story with U$ visitti=

Paris and Notre Dame, and he dreams that he talks with those gargoils
(well, it is not a comic, but they are
the ones with whom Quasimodo is friend... in the movie). The last story

the present (including some by Vivie Risto). Mark Evanier edited the
project, and if it's successful, logic would only dictate that there may be
more. So, given my liking for the vintage LT comics, I guess I ought to
suggest we all run out and buy the darn thing. I think it's going to be
good.

I think so too.
Well, I haven't got time to set up properly a Barks censorship page,
although I am MUCH interested in the subject.
All I might do is just scan the original "Treasure of Marco Polo" story
(which I happen to have from my youth...) and put it on my webpages along
with Donald Duck's Atom Bomb and other censored stories. I plan to do this
in a few days... so stay tuned. And you, Tristan, prepare your 20 bucks ;-)

Well, I haven't got time to set up properly a Barks censorship page,
although I am MUCH interested in the subject.
All I might do is just scan the original "Treasure of Marco Polo" story
(which I happen to have from my youth...) and put it on my webpages along
with Donald Duck's Atom Bomb and other censored stories. I plan to do this
in a few days... so stay tuned. And you, Tristan, prepare your 20 bucks ;-)

putting all your trust in the direct market means that circulation takes
a nosedive, then use some other means to distribute Gladstone comics. I
don't have any pity for people that say, "It's not my fault! I'm a
victim! Take care of me at your expense. Feel sorry for me!" Why should
I feel sorry for a business that knew the risks of doing business when
it started? If all Gladstone is going to do is whine and blame their
problems on other outside factors, then maybe it is time for a company
that takes charge and offers no lame excuses to take the Disney license.

reason -- that he (and others of us) were able to start our careers due to
Gladstone's existence and inspiration. And every other Disney publication on
the planet shows a new devotion to the quality of the contents, the history
of the comics, a new RESPECT FOR THE WRITERS AND ARTISTS, a new RESPECT FOR
THE READERS, a new interest in producing comics that look and read nicely
for *any* age level rather than just as junk for slow-witted kiddies.... the
Barks Libraries across Europe are all based on (or are direct copies of)
Gladstone's albums. The best Disney comics in the world such as the Greek
KOMIX or the Italian ZIO PAPERONE & MASTERS OF DISNEY are clearly inspired
by Gladstone's comics or are often direct copies off Gladstone's editorial
pages (want to hear more "whining" for Gladstone? They pay Disney for the
use of Gladstone's efforts, NOT Gladstone, nor does anyone even seek
Gladstone's permission to reuse their work, even though Gladstone, as Disney
comics fans, is happy to allow it!). Gladstone comics has been the cause of
the worldwide revitalization of the quality of Disney comics.

Errr...but, but I wrote that PICSOU advertises *MICKEY* for its November
issue! Plus, PICSOU celebrated Uncle Scrooge's anniversary last December (in
PICSOU #311) by printing...yes, you guesses correctly: "A Little Something

The same place where I got Picsou magazine in Athens also sells Mickey
Parade, at the same low price. I'm not going to repeat myself extolling
the virtues of this magazine, like I did with Picsou. Suffice it to say
that as it contains the kind of stories I don't seem to find elsewhere,
I'm going to be reading more of it.
Reading the issue I bought this weekend (223, with Scarpa's "Mickey and
the Advertising Giant", which I'd never read before, and is *fantastic*),
I learned that the French Mickey lives in Mickeyville. Therefore,
Archontis, it seems somehow unlikely that it will be Mickey who will be
celebrating his anniversary in *Donaldville*, which, I gather, is the
equivalent of Duckburg.
You may have noticed that the subject of this message is "Mickey Parade
*221*" and not 223. Looking at their back issues page, I saw that
the cover of #221 shows Mickey fighting someone wearing a cowboy hat
who looks exactly like him. Could it be that they reprinted Scarpa's
"The Emperor of Calisota" in that issue? This is one story I'd *love*
to re-read. It would be great if that story was suddenly brought only
a few international reply coupons away! (Can anyone tell me what other
Scarpa stories they've printed in 1998? I gather that they're printing
one each month, in honor of Mickey's 70th anniversary.)
On a slightly different note, looking at the reproductions of the covers
of the two issues of Topolino where "Mickey and the Advertising Giant"
apperaed, I can't help noticing how similar in style they look to the
covers of the first issues of the Greek "Mickey Mouse" magazine, which
must have been modelled after Topolino.

To all U.S. residents:
How do I go about getting subscriptions for comic books?
I've sent in the ads for subscription out of the comic books along with
a check, but I've never received anything and the check wasn't cashed.
Since I can't get them in the stores, I'm starting to have
withdrawals...HELP!
