Hi!

I just saw the cover of the new Finnish Rosa-book at DUCKhunt and I just
have to say that I love it! Using Gallen-Kallela's famous painting is a
great idea! I hope the story will be as good as the cover... Keep up the
good work, Don! I am impressed!

Btw, how did they manage to get that picture there? Is there somebody who
already has a copy of the book? What else is in it?

Here are some thoughts about Barks' infamous lost bobsled race tenpager.

Submitted on December=A015, 1955, and probably intended for Walt Disney's=
=20
Comics and Stories=A0No.=A0196 (1957). Barks wrote on this entry: "Don't=20
know what became of this story. Probably scrapped."=20

Recently I noticed that the submission date of this story is only one=20
week away from the next tenpager Barks submitted, which is the snow=20
statue contest story submitted on December 22, 1955. This story was=20
the one that was used in Walt Disney Comics and Stories 196.

I found it strange that Barks made two stories with a similar subject
(a race and a contest) and looking at the snow statue story I think=20
I see redrawing throughout the story. I even think I've found proof=20
for my theory, because in one panel Donald mentions "the race"=20
instead of a contest.

Because, what I think is that the bobsled race tenpager will never be=20
found again because it was cut up into an almost completely new=20
story about snow statues. (Within one week!!!)

Looking at the last page (which I think might have used a more damaged=20
Donald in the bobsled version), the story seems to re-use a part of
the end of the 1940s skate contest (WDC 54). This is interesting,=20
because the submarine bike story (WDC 190) also uses that contest.

Looking at the "misunderstood" Donald I'm even wondering if Kite=20
Weather might have been reused, because he somehow looks as if he=20
might have worn children's clothes. (Maybe the bobsled race only=20
was for kids?) That would explain why the nephews call him a viper=20
in another panel that might be retouched for reuse in the new snow
stastue story.

A nice detail is that the people mostly seem to work at the lowest=20
part of the snow statues (the height of a bobsled?). If my theory=20
is right, Carl Barks retouched the bobsled story material so good=20
that he has the children make the snow princess's cloak nicely=20
wrapped on the ground (see the last pages) to remove any question=20
why they're so busy working at ground height all the time.=20

I've found more surprising instances, but I hope this will do for=20
now.

Interesting theory about the Bobsled race story.
The only problem with it, as I see it, is that they were submitted
so close to each other.
First the story had to reach the editors and then they would have
to make the decision to reject the story. And that would have
had taken a *minimum* of two - three days.
If the editor then gave Barks a phonecall he would have four days to come
up with the snow sculpture story - drawing it and ink it.

And that is *fast*. And almost impossible to do without help from
assistants. And also thinking of how good the snow sculpture story is I
don't think it was done in a hurry. (Especially the ending is *very* good.
One of my favorite endings in a Barks ten pager actually.)

But who knows, you might be right!
(I just pointed out a weak point in the theory.
Who knows if we ever gonna get an answer.)

Anyone who knows more about why just some "Part one" of his MM serials has
survived, and not much else except lots of 8 pagers from the 70's? Anyone
that keeps track on wich Murry and Strobl art that still exist?

Btw, Kenda, I have to say that I like your Rosa site a lot.
I'd really like to see it in Finnish or English, though.
I understand Swedish quite well(?), but I know a lot of
people who don't, and therefore miss all the interesting stuff
you have there...
