hi,

i agree with geo entirely about his being ripped off on the "signed" barks
poster on ebay. the listing clearly says "signed" in the title and it clearly
shows a "signed" poster in the photograph.

i have heard some lame excuses before, but to say, as the dealer does, that
geo should know from the low price that the item was not signed is a
ridiculous excuse. who says someone "would never get a signed Barks anything
for onlyh $15.00?" i have -- and on ebay, too, and from people who know more
about barks' signed work than this dealer ever will.

there are still bargains on ebay, although not as many as there used to be,
so there's no reason to believe the poster was anything other than what the
dealer said it was. a few month ago, for example, someone bought a numbered
and signed copy of edward gorey's "leaves from a mislaid album" for $299.00
on buy-it-now, which means the dealer set a maximum price for the item; if
you could find a copy with a professional dealer who knew what he or she was
doing, that item would be more than a thousand dollars. according to this
dealer, we should think this item actually is not genuine, because you would
never get one for only $299.00.

anyone who has any trouble with a dealer on ebay should contact ebay through
"safe harbor" or "customer support" -- email: safeharbor at ebay.com or
support at ebay.com. the amount of the item doesn't matter. fraud is fraud.
misrepresentation is misrepresentation. someone had a 96th birthday
invitation listed a little while ago, saying that the writing inside it was
by barks, when in fact it was a printed copy of his writing. ebay delisted
it.

that poster also exists in a limited signed and numbered edition of 500
copies; those come with a certificate of authenticity pasted to the back of
the poster. how many more exist that were signed but not numbered is anyone's
guess. beware, it's real easy to add numbers to a signed print or poster.
there probably are a lot that were unsigned and unnumbered, too.

I've been looking at the scan of the Akku Ankka cover of Rosa's latest
masterpeice Forget it.
I suppose that the D.U.C.K. is hidden in the flashes or in the lace of
Magicas neck or arms, but I simply can't see it.
Can someone pinpoint the exact location for me please ?

I too laughed out loud. And I also love these little details in Don's
stories. Like the reaction of the girl in the airport on what Donald
says to her is then showed in the background of the following panel.

A lot of the rare 3 pack issues ended up in Australia (imported as waste paper),
some were sold in packs here, while others had their covers removed and were
rebound in lots of 5 issues into giant comics.

How rare are DD222, WDC480, and MM208?, I have 2 copies of M208 and 1 of D222.

I'm not sure if Michael reads the DCML anymore, but regardless of that, I
wanna jump in here and offer some accurate info on these comics since
there's so much inaccurate info going around, especially on those eBay
auction pages where the sellers are copying from the mistakes in the
Overstreet Guide.
It is often said that these comics (U$ 179, DD 222, WDC&S 480, MM 208 and
others) are rare because they "were only in Whitman 3-packs", which is
silly. ALL Whitmans of those final years were only sold in America in
3-packs in toy stores as "toys", just like the Whitman coloring books and
puzzles. The whole problem with that group of comics for that certain month
is that they were NOT sold in those 3-packs in America. As near as we can
tell, they were sold in 3-packs in Canada and individually on newsstands in
Europe. The only copies I've ever seen have come from those areas. And in
those areas, these comics are NOT any rarer than any other issues. However,
most of the fervent collectors are in America, so that's where those issues
are in demand.
Last time I was in Finland, I was visiting a friend and telling about the U$
179 and how American collectors are so anxious to find copies. And this
friend said there were some old Whitmans stuck in a closet from childhood
and went to get them out. When I eyed the small stack, the U$ 179 wasn't
simply in the stack, it happened to be on the very top! (Sortuva well-read,
well-loved copy.) The issue was bought off the normal magazine racks in the
early 80's (when they apparently sold some English-language Disney comics in
Europe in those days). So, this demonstrated that these rare-in-America
issues are not rare outside of our borders. I won't say there are LOTS of
them in Europe, but the issues are no more rare than any others of the same
age.
There's no reason to assume that the U$ 179 or the DD 222 are the most
rare... but these are the two (or three, along with WDC&S) that the most
collectors (the core of Disney/Barks collectors) are seeking, so they are
harder to track down. This especially applies to U$ 179, but *only* because
$crooge/Barks collectors are the most avid.
An U$ 179 is put on eBay every few weeks or months by some dealer, and the
prices it fetches have dropped from over a grand down to several hundred
dollars as the people willing to pay *so much* for such a poor quality
reprint issue, just for the sake of having a complete collection, dwindle.
Currently, I see the "hot" Whitman to be the matching issue of LITTLE LULU,
#260 or thereabouts, which I saw recently sell on eBay, in average beat-up
condition, for $800! Considering that the U$ 179's that fetched the high
prices several years ago were all in VF-NM shape, this sadly means Little
Lulu is whupping Uncle $crooge in this particular popularity contest. Go
figure.
It seems obvious to assume that all of the Whitmans printed during that
month (I won't say "published", since these were being produced like
coloring books for toy store bags, not as newsstand periodicals) are equally
rare in America. I imagine that there are issues of BUGS BUNNY or WOODSY OWL
or PINK PANTHER which are as hard to find as U$179... but since there are no
avid collectors of those, nobody notices or cares...

Uncle Scrooge 179.

Until recently I had no idea that this was considered the rarest of the lot. I have always read (again, up until recently) that Uncle Scrooge 40 was the rarest. If my memory is correct (I will double check when I get home later), that book had several key things going on. First, it was the first Gold Key copy and the company did not have full distribution set up, second there was an issue with the artwork because the publisher was trying to get away with not using gutters (panel borders) but that idea was not followed through (although the dialog balloons were left square) and that caused the issue to be late, and third it's the first appearance of Magica De Spell (doesn't add to rarity, but does make it key book none the less). Outside of my personal copy of this book I have never seen it up for sale at any comic shop or convention, in fact I have never personally seen another copy of it at all. I have seen several copies of 179 spring up lately, which makes me question if it's just hype. However when I went back through my books I found that that is one of the few copies I'm missing from the series, so perhaps it is the rarest of the lot. Then again, it could be a 1916 quarter. Anyone have any insight as to weather or not it is a rare as people claim or if it's just hype? Is number 40 really the rarest as I had always though?
