In past weeks my fears have been confirmed. This list is running on an
autopilot. No one moderates what is being said here. Rules of wild west
and no sheriff. Atmosphere is just too dangerous to have discussions,
you never know what kind of material someone decides to throw at your face.

Things being the way they are, I've decided to leave the list and look
for substitute with real, working leadership. These have been mostly
great three years. I think a world of many of you, hopefully our paths
will collide sometime in the future. I'd like to thank all those nice
people I've had the pleasure to talk with: Donald Ault, Lars Jensen,
Timo Ronkainen, Olivier, Steven Rowe, Barry, Cord, Fernando, Katie,
Maciek, Mickey, Olaf, Rob Klein, Dan Shane, Don Rosa and all the others
I forget.

Because of the current conflict on the list which seems to only get
worse I deem it necessary to use emergency moderation for this list
again, as unfortunately was necessary a few years ago as well.

Now every posting will be held for moderation. No attacks will be let
through, and no continuation of the ongoing argument either,
regardless of its nature.

It may take some time for postings to be let through. You'll have to
be patient.

Finally the Inducks websites are working again. The main reason for the
long delay was technical arrangements that had to be done in-location at
the Internet Service Provider in order to correct the error. I.e. it was
something out of reach to the Inducks team. Furthermore these
arrangements were delayed of various reasons, the most influential one
being the Easter holiday.

It might be that some users will still experience the Inducks websites
as being down. This is because your local ISP has to update its name
servers (technical term: DNS servers) before it works for you. Give it a
few hours and try again.

Those of you who edited your local "hosts" file in order to make things
work temporarily may now edit it back to what it was before the
down-time. Be careful not to remove any other lines than those you
inserted. You may use the same procedure as when you added the lines --
except you have to remove the lines instead, of course :-) :

In the down-time the Inducks database has been updated (almost) as
usual, so when you see e.g. COA again, it will be an (almost) fully
updated version.

We, the Inducks team, are sorry for the long down-time and the

Highly interesting reading [and not only the delightful fact
that Hans von Storch, one of the founding fathers of
the equally delightful "Hamburger Donaldisten"?, is now
a professor of Climatology]. In which editions of this
"April's Fools" Barks story from 1952 *has* Mein Kampf
been shown, on the dustbin of history? I know that
the Norwegian 1952 edition certainly has just a blank
title page.

This is something I'd like to know, since I'm a cartoonist myself, and
at least in Finland, it's been more than customary that artist make
his/hers own speech balloons. I believe MARVEL (tm) has used similar
kind of approach through the years. All the way starting from 1940's.
Stan made his own dialog after the art work was finished. :-)

I've heard artist Mau Heymans about the subject some time ago, in a
private conversation, and I understood he was quite unhappy and worried
about the computer-balloons, as each balloon should be unique, with a
feeling of its own.

This made me wonder how the situation could have come so far. I think
that the artists should just have continued drawing balloons, so that
the editor would have the impossible task of replacing them. Would they
fire respected comic book artists who insist on drawing *balloons*? That
would be the news of the year, I say. Maybe a lot of artists don't know
their value? Then, I hope they do now.

I'm sure the Dutch artists and writers have opened a bottle of champagne
when they heard the news of the editor finally rejecting the situation.
Who wouldn't? It's reason for a *party*, now the REAL balloons return. :-)

I find computer-balloons worser than the legendary square balloons of
the early 1960s. By using computer-balloons, artists have to *guess*
were the balloons will be placed, so in the end their panels look like
badly taken pictures, labeled with balloon-stickers.

A comic book story has balloons. It's part of the job. If a comic book
artist isn't allowed to draw balloons, he becomes an illustator drawing
illustrations. And the balloon-pasting becomes an interference in the
final result, no matter how. Furthermore, the software balloons look
exactly the same in each story by every artist, over and over again.

And background jokes might get lost, which for example happened in a
recent 6 page Mau Heymans story about taxes, in Dutch weekly 2005-07.

In panel 1.1 of that story, a bird on a fence with a tied-up beak got
hidden under a balloon. This bird was part of a riddle elsewhere in the
weekly. So, in the next weekly, number 2005-08, the solution of the
riddle refered to a panel without any bird at all, except Donald and
his nephews.

It is known that Barks sold few gags to Comic Strip Dept through the years.
I guess this is mentioned in Barrier's book. Can't check it right away.
