Let me try to answer to all your points. First, about trade paperback issues, Brazilian comics in general are printed in not very nice papers and in a smaller size than regular USA comics. I only know one specific Jose Carioca comic printed with special paper and in bigger size (I guess normal size for you). It is part of a collection in which each book was dedicated to a famous disney artist: Don Rosa, Cavazzano, Scarpa, Tagliaferro, e.g., and Renato Canini, a brazilian who did some of the best Jose Carioca stories. Therefore, this book is the closest thing to a must have of Jose Carioca comics printed in Brazil. It was sold about 5 years ago, and today can be found in MercadoLivre, our version of e-bay. I just checked and there are three or four of this comic for sale, with a price around U$15 to U$30. They are all used, but the sellers promisse a near-mint condition.
Other than that, I can only think of two options:
1) regular issues from the comic called "Zé Carioca", which is, as the name says, dedicated to Jose Carioca, in which you could have an idea of the different stories printed in Brazil. I would recommend recent ones, which have mainly reprints, as their condition would be better and would be at a nice price. These can be found at the former mentioned MercadoLivre, with prices around U$1,50 to U$4,00.
2) some special edition, like the one celebrating his 60th birthday, with has, in theory, a sellection of his best stories (unfortunatly, even this special edition isn??t in papaerback). It can be found around U$ 8,00, used, but at nice condition, as claimed by the sellers at MercadoLivre;
3) as you mentioned his role as a superhero (by the way, called Green Bat) I would also recommend one of the many brazilian comics that gather stories about the superheros you mentioned. I can search for older ones, but right now there is a just launched one priced around U$ 3,00, if I am not wrong.
All these, except from the Renato Canini??s edition of Mestres Disney, are always in the smaller size I mentioned.
About the stores and places to but it, I??m sorry to say that brazilian stores aren??t usually much friendly with foreigners, as they rarely have an english version or ship to other countries. The largest internet store I believe we have is ??Submarino? , were I couldn??t find anything. Our version of e-bay doesn??t have information in english either.
Knowing that, I would offer myself to get a few comics and send to you. As I am not a seller, and I wouldn??t even know an easy way for you to send me money, I could send a few comics to you, and, I don??t know, you may send me some comics around the same value. You could just tell me a price range and I would tell you the best I can get and send to you if you really want it.

I would prefer trade paperbacks for collecting whenever possible. Are there any "must own" stories that are considered not to be missed by Jose fans? Have they been collected as trade paperbacks? If so, what are the titles so I will know them if I look for them on eBay or if you know any Brazilian comics stores that sell online. Is there a Latin American equivalent of Amazon.com? I do not want to spend a lot of money, but I would like to sample some popular stories that have been good enough to be put into a trade paperback collection.
At this point, I do not know what I want to buy yet, I am still just trying to find out more information. But I am excited that there are Jose comics that I never though I would have access to as a kid, but now thanks to the Internet I can try to hunt down.

Hullo. I've been lurking around here for a while (and reading GeoX's excellent blog), but I thought I'd finally get around to signing up and making an intro post. I've been a Duckfan since I was a kid and my dad read the comics aloud to me and my siblings. It's been great fun to grow up, reread my favorite childhood stories, and realize that they are just as good as I remember them being. And to find a whole forum of people who feel the same way. ; )

My name is Preston, or "DW" online...I've been lurking about the forums here for a long time, and finally decided to register today. I was born in a (very) small town in the Southern USA, to parents who taught me to read using old Disney comics. I was exposed to Barks very early on, and though my family had very little money at the time for "luxuries," my parents committed to letting me pick out one comic book per week in order to encourage my reading habits. For a long time, the choice of comic that I picked out was made depending on whether or not it had a Barks or Rosa story in it! Even before I was really old enough to link the creator's name to the story in a conscious way, I could immediately tell by the artwork.
I enjoyed the Duck-based Disney Afternoon cartoons as I got a little older, which is where my online handle comes from.
