Rowe was referring to the announcement that Gemstone's Disney Comics office was officially shut down. But all that has shut down is their Missouri publishing office run by Russ Cochran. Gemstone's East Coast office still remains open (however, possibly with less staff than at their maximum?). I hope they can hang on, (or just have a temporary halt to operations until Diamond/Gemstone can get its overall economic situation cleared up. I'm not sure that any other franchisee for US Disney comics will be found if Gemstone goes out of business.

I just contacted Gemstone through their website to inquire about placing a back-issue order and was told by a lady whose name I don't recall that the company that used to handle previous orders is no longer there.

I meant NEVER AGAIN. 5,000-6,000 issues demand is not enough to warrant printing these days. The days of the comic book format are dying in Europe, too (just a slower death than USA). I doubt that we'll see traditional Disney Comics again in USA, IF Gemstone doesn't resume operations. I just hope we get to keep them going for another 10-15 years in The Netherlands, Scandinavia, France, and Italy.

I would have to agree with you. I think anything else at this point in time is pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking. I think the big comet has finally slammed onto the world of the U.S. Disney comic book dinosaurs!

As someone who grew up on Gladstone reprints, this news saddens me to no end. I knew the writing was on the wall for Gemstone (and US disney comics in general) but I didn't expect that I'd be so SADDENED by it. I don't know any other languages aside from english (although last year I became determined to learn Dutch, looks like I have an excuse to start that again!) and the thought of never being able to read a new duck story in English is just utterly painful.

I know what you mean Brigitta. I will miss seeing Disney Comics in English as well. Maybe we can go to online fan sites that have some Disney Comics online that you can read them. B's Webpage has every story by Carl Barks, and Don Rosa and some by Floyd Gottfredson, and Al Taliaferro.

That's very sad!
B's Webpage is great but can't replace a printed book. I hope that at least an English Carl Barks Collection will be printed (by Gemstone or Egmont). I think there are enough buyers for a product like that. But for a regular comic book with new stories, like Uncle Scrooge, the time may be over.

The thing that I loved about the monthlies was the chance to read NEW duck stories, adventures and such that I hadn't yet discovered. As much as I love and Treasure Lost in the Andes (my personal favorite Barks story), there's only so many times someone can read it without wanting something more. I've absorbed and adored as much Rosa and Barks as I can, and seeing new stuff was just a treasure for me, like seeing a new chapter in your favorite book appear out of the blue.
While my thoughts on the comic industry come just from fan speculation and without a lick of professional knowledge, I wonder if Gemstone wouldn't have done better to just stick to collections and kicked the monthlies.

I hear you. It is going to be sad that the demise of Disney Comics is at hand. I've been a Disney Comics Fan since 1987 and it's going to be hard to imagine life without Disney Comics even though it's happened twice before.

Gemstone had almost no production. There will be almost exactly the same number of new Disney comic book stories produced. It's just that only a few of them will be published in English language (India). You will just have to read them in another language.

Ugh, I have been away for awhile and this is awful....I started to wonder myself why my subscription dried up after 10 issues....now I see this stuff....that printing debt is no laughing matter......It's amazing how this economy justs keeps rearing its ugly head eveywhere.....I guess I'm thankful for what I have in duck stories to read for many years...

I just went to my local shop to get a missed copy of the TPB Ducktales: Gold Oddyssey and the owner told me that Gemstone has ceased their distribution indefinately. The owner stated (as I already knew from here,) that this was due to financial problems the company had been having...I guess I wonder if the last 2 issues of my Uncle Scrooge subscription due, will be replacement copies from other Gemstone specials/lines or a refund, or nothing.....it's kind of a sad day for me.....I have been collecting Uncle Scrooge since the mid 1980's - I have the whole run from issue #1. It would be nice to see someone else pick it up, but like others have said, in this day and age, demand creates production.....I guess there's just not enough demand...
