And for those I already know: hello Didier, Don, Harry and Fabio!...
My name is Francois Willot; I'm new on this list and here's a short
introducktion:
I'm French, I'm twenty years old and I'm interested in Disney comics,
football, mathematics...
I'm currently working on a Disney comics index. I sent large parts of it
to Harry Fluks and I hope he'll be able to include the data in the
Disney comics Database so that anyone can "enjoy" it.
I'm intersested in all sort of Disney comics -- but especially in
Italian Disney comics. Writers and Artists like Romano Scarpa, Massimo
De Vita or the great Guido Martina are my favorite authors.
I was told recently that the major part of this mailing list is
American/Scandinavian, so I think it's always good to have French (or
Italian, or Brazilian) guys on-line.
Oh -- I have lots of question about Disney comics (in all countries) and
I guess many people here can be of help. For my part, I'll be very happy
to answer any question about Disney comics in France -- if I can. Just
ask me!

Thank you very much, Wilmer, for the excellent points you made showing
that the dynamics of =93Island in the Sky=94 present an astronomical
predicament, and not just an astronomical impossibility. I think we can
assume that both asteroids in the story are tidally locked with each
other, with both always appearing in the same location in the other=92s
sky.
That there was a permanent relationship between the two planetoids is
evidenced by the birds apparently flying regularly between them to feed
and nest, kind of in the way birds on Earth sometimes forage for food
inland from the seacoast, but which nest on small rocky islands
offshore.
Personally, I don=92t think anything Scrooge did in the story is, strictl=
y
speaking, impossible. Much of it may have been difficult, but not
impossible. For example, to successfully stretch a rope between the two
anchor points, Scrooge could have used a marvelous =93monofilament=94
material, a super-hard, super-thin, and super-light type of line
invented by Gyro. Arthur C. Clarke once wrote of letting-out such a line
into space from the Earth=92s surface in his science fiction book, =93The=
Fountains of Paradise.=94 The story described a device located on a
mountain top on the island of Ceylon from which monofilament was let
upward into the sky, terminating at a space station in low Earth orbit. =
It was the basis of a system known as a space elevator, and was supposed
to provide cheap and easy access to space. The book =93Red Mars=94 by Ki=
m
Stanley Robinson built on the same concept, but with heavier hardware. =
As far as both planetoids using the same atmosphere, I'm reminded of
Larry Niven's book, "The Integral Trees," in which an entire biome,
complete with floating trees,existed in weightless space in a huge =
torus ring of atmosphere in orbit around a star; a really fascinating
book.

also always wondered how the indians got on the small asteroid in the
first place. Were they marooned there by someone? Did they
accidentally maroon themselves? Did they originally come from the
large asteroid, or from some other place altogether? Did they once
possess high technology? I=92ll bet these questions sound familiar to
others on this list.
Anyway, Island in the Sky seems ripe for a (good) sequel.
On a related note, I think the golden moon in =93The 24-Carat Moon=94
presents a much better candidate for an astronomical impossibility. I
really like this story, but I=92ve never been able to understand how the
golden moon could have possibly remained hidden from the view of Earth
behind the Earth=92s moon. Earth=92s moon is already tidally locked with
Earth; it=92s 28 day rotation is the same as a single orbit about the
Earth, and the Earth always appears in the same part of the lunar sky. =
If the 24-carat moon were tidally locked with Earth=92s moon it would
essentially be part of the Earth-Moon system. As described in the story,
it would always have to be opposite the Earth as seen from Earth=92s moon=
=2E
To do this the golden moon would have to orbit Earth=92s moon once every

High German issues.

A few weeks back we had been talking about Disney "superheroes" and Mickey
as the Red Bee was mentioned. I wouldn't mind seeing a reprint of that
story; I doubt if it has been redone in years.

WD's Comics and Stories #317, 318 and 319. In total 30 pages.
The only reprint known (to me) is in Holland, in 1970!

In case anyone wants to know: this is "The Red Wasp Mystery" from
WD's Comics and Stories #317, 318 and 319. In total 30 pages.
The only reprint known (to me) is in Holland, in 1970!

they get back to the accumulated digests, the page-down button is
probably more used than usually.

Jon Hollis discusses an Italian story of the raising of the Titanic,
referring to a Swedish publication. John Clark(?) answers in the usual
positive spirit, but admits to not having a clue what story it is.
Thanks to the Swedish word "Ankanic" the dcomics database readily
came up with a two part story from Topolino 1616/1617 (Nov. 1986),
"Zio Paperone il recupero del Paperic" ("Uncle Scrooge: Raising the
Duckanic"), written by Giorgio Pezzin and with art by no-one less
than the great Scarpa. It's 30 + 38 pages three tier format, which
adds up to 34 pages in sideways format: still a little too much for
one normal issue, but serializing it as 15 + 19 pages would be in
the spirit of the original version.

Just as a style suggestion, it's probably not a good idea to
abbreviate "Disney comics" as "DCs." The company that publishes
Superman, Batman, et al is DC Comics (originally an abbreviation
for "Detective Comics," which dates back to the 1930s). DC Comics
in the United States refers only to the Superman publisher, and
its publications are commonly called (in fan parlance) "DCs."
Calling Disney comics "DCs" is inviting confusion, I'm afraid.
Superman is a DC comic. Uncle Scrooge is a Disney comic.

late, lamented Disney Comics, asked me to pass on the word
that he's selling his accumulation of Disney Comics issues
(his personal office copies). If you have some holes in
your collection, this might be a way to fill them. This is
an emergency situation, so his prices are pretty much

Hi there!
I'm new here and I am a bit confused.I want to ask you some questions
about this emailing list and I will also provide an introDUCKtion for
myself (I really like this term!).
I am from Greece and I have been reading disney comics since I learned
to read (Before I go to school). I am 13 years old and that's why my
English are awful. Greece has a really long tradition in Disney Comics.
There are 10 magazines in Greece plus the special volumes. Special
Volumes are magazines with a different title every time, they aren't
published every month for example but have a random publish time (I
killed this sentence :-) ). One volume may have the title <<Special
Scrooge Mc Duck>> but the next one may have the title <<Special Magica
De Spell>>. Also there are some random published magazines without the
special term in front of them. For example <<I istoria kai doksa tis
dinastias ton Ntak>> (The history and glory of the dynasty of
Ducks...I'm not sure for the translation.It's one of my favorite
stories) or <<To spathi ton pagon>> (The ice sword, or something.This
is the best story I have ever read...And its main character was Mickey
Mouse.. ) don't have something in common. The <<Miki Maous>> (Mickey
Mouse) magazine is one of the oldest comics magazines in Greece and I
think, the first that published Disney Comics. It was first published in
1966 I think. Megalo Miki is an old one too (August 1967 I'm sure for
that). Komix (Comics) is an old magazine too... (His first volume was
printed around 1986-1987. I know you are really busy Don but could you
answer me one question?.Did you write the introductions for each part
of The Life and Times of Scrooge Mc Duck especially for the magazine or
all the magazines use the same ?It seems like a translation from the
Scrooge Mc Duck page. ).I really respect this magazine because it hasn't
changed since the first volume (anyway is that word correct or I should
use the word issue?) in quality.Some of the other magazines write
articles for sports, computer games etc...Why Do I have to PAY for these
arcticles when I want to read comic stories?I can go and buy a sports
magazine if I want!!!This makes me really mad(For example the ALMANAKO
(I can't translate this..It can't be a greek word)magazine that I have
stopped buying it for that reason.80% of its pages was full of sports
etc.Forrtunatelly other magazines don't use more than 10% of their
pages.OK i know this is a bit boring and that you want to know why I am
writing all these. One answer may be I don't know. Another answer may be
because I'm new here and I don't know what to write and another answer
may be that I want to inform you about the greek comics market (TIP:make
a combination of these answers and you'll get the right one :-) ).

I want to ask some questions for the site and the emailing list.
1)Can I add attachments on my email?For example a scanned picture I
scanned from a magazine in GIF format
2)I saw the names translation database and I know most od the greek
names of the characters..(More than 90% are missing) Where can I send an
email to report the greek names so that the webmaster can add the names
in the database?
3)Can You See Colours????????????????? They help a lot in underlining
some words...
4)Non-Internet related Question: I want to subscribe (Missing
proposition-Idon't know what to write here.. in...at???) two gladstone
mags... The Scrooge Mc Duck magazine and the 4 issue <<The life and
Times of SMD>> The story is not published in the same magazine is it?
5)Do you know if the emailing list program on the server supports HTML
email so that we don't have to send attachments (If possible) to insert
pictures?Although I don't know if that would be a good idea. The email
size would get really big (I killed this sentence)

I'm sorry if i write inaccurate info for the greek magazines but I am in
vacations and i don't have access in my library (I have 5 selfs filled
with Comic Magazines)I'll correct them as soon as i get back to greece
(I'm in cyprus right now)

As i've said, I am 13 years old from Greece.I have grown with Disney
copyrighted comics and i cannot imagine my life without them. My biggest
dream is to cooperate with a Disney comics magazine. I was thinking to
write an article in KOMIX about comics on the WWW but there aren't many
sites about this on the WWW in english and i don't think they'll accept
my work.. I always tried to draw characters but i haven't tried to draw
them without looking them(I don't know if you can understand what i am
trying to say...) I have also tryed to write stories but I was really
dissapointed when I lost 9 pages of text because of a Microsoft word bug
(It was hunging when I entered the password.I trying 100000 times to
open it). I like computer science a lot too but It is really different
thing from comics... When I am reading a comic, I can't hear what other
people say, I don't remember anything and I am really relaxed.When I am
in front of my PC I enjoy it a lot and I am really interested for that
machine but i feel a bit nervous and anxius
I think that's enough. You can send my letter in 2 parts if you want.
PLEASE Let me know when you don't like something in my letters or if
they are boring.I am really excited with this emailing list and I think
i will be a.. frequent writer.
I will unsubscribe and resubscribe in a week because i'll change an
email... My correct email is (Email removed) but I don't know if i
will be able to keep it when I get back to greek
