Just HOW unimaginable are these alternatives that are
getting attention nowadays? Are you DESPERATE enough for new
directions to consider a Bucky Bug album, marketed to PARENTS of
young children, as a read-aloud book? I really do think such a
thing would go over (if you were able to place it properly and
get people to do more than glance at it), but it's SO off-the-
beaten-track, it may require a VERY sobering blast through a few
craniums.
Just as a note of shameless self-promotion, let me point
out that the current series of re-scripted Dutch stories will
(unless extended by new ones arriving) total 19 pages. There are
also 20 pages of my undrawn scripts that have been languishing
in filing cabinets for years (which you'd only ("only"!) have to
pay for art on, since Disney already bought the scripts), plus
an undrawn two-page introduction of the characters, and (if you
really NEED the filler) five undrawn ecology PSA's totalling
seven pages. That's 48 modern pages; never mind the fact that it
ran monthly in WDC&S through most of the 1940s.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but I really,
honestly, truly do believe these rhyming stories could make it
as read-aloud books, if people just gave them half a chance. My
own experience reading them to young children is what originally
alerted me to what a wonderful series it is.
By the way, the first kid I read them to is now a mom
herself, and still has fond memories of Bucky.

the video market, at least in the USA, both *Song of the South* and
*The Black Cauldron* are being re-editted. The rumors are that in SotS
the segment with the Tar Baby is being removed (terrible mistake), and
that several segments in TBC are being reanimated (I wish that just
meant they were being "brought back to life" but it doesn't). It's
title may also see a new "PC" version, like "Taran and the Magic
Cauldron." Both may be available on video later in 1998 or 1999.

what Disney needs to do if they ever want their comics to MATTER to
anyone in the general public, is simply make them available to new
readers! As a child, 99% of my comic books were purchased at the local
grocery store ("can i PLEASE get some mom???"). After learning to love
comics that way, i was primed as i grew older to take it to the next
level-- the direct market stores. Thats the way the comic industry
model SHOULD work... there needs to be a way to continually bring new
readers into the fold, and that way has always traditionally been the
newstands. In his post, Michael said that he thought they could be used
as "shut-me-ups" aimed at kids, and thats exactly what they SHOULD be.
A series of digests would be the ground floor, as it were... from there,
we would get the fancier, higher priced "collectors" magazines, like we
see in most european markets, as the next "level". Like the archie
digests, I would suggest the Disney ones contain a mix of both old and
new stories w/ a mix of styles (egmont, italian, as well as
Barks,etc...) With the old 4 color, simplified layouts of the 50's and
60's , i think a lot of Barks' work wouldnt suffer too much from a
digest format... Don's stuff probably would... although I don't know how
many young readers would get as much out of Don's stories, as they are
aimed at an older audience.
when i was a kid, i never read superheroes. I had a large collection of
archie, harvey and disney books (I was surprised to find, when digging
thru my ancient comics, that I loved uncle scrooge back then! I had far
more U$ comics than any other disney title...). Becuase of being
exposed to those books early, I still do enjoy reading archie books from
time to time. I think thats the biggest reason why no americans know
anything about disney comics... we've had a whole generation that hasnt
had any access to them! Reading Disney comics at a young age would
endear the reader to them when he got older, which may or may not lead
him to keep buying the fancier collectores magazines, but WOULD make him
more likely to give his own kids access to Disney comics when the time
arises... I think this ALSO happens in the european markets, where
disney comics become almost something passed down thru the family.
but anyway, I've rambled long enough. I'm sure someone will come on and
tell me this plan is crazy and wouldnt work in the US, or whatever. But
I just look at how successfull the archies are, and feel a little sad
that a ton of great comics risk fading into obscurity in the very
country that pioneered them.

I've always assumed we get the comics later here in Canada than in most
sections of the States, and kinda forgot that many wouldn't have read it
yet. That, and the fact that the surprise ending is given away in the book
itself in the notes by Geoffrey Blum, which I always read before reading
the story (and imagine most readers do). No excuse though, really, I just
got carried away. I promise I won't mention any plot details of future
stories until a suitable length of time has elapsed.
