Quote:Name 20 (!) Duck family members that were used, named or mentioned by Carl Barks, but were nevertheless omitted from Don Rosa's Duck Family Tree? Please include a story title or Inducks-link in your answer.

- Only 9 of these were unseen characters.

- The question refers to this version of Rosa's Family Tree, which includes Daisy and her nieces.

- These 20 characters have been family members right from their first appearance. Characters that were retroactively made into family members, e.g. Flintheart Glomgold, don't count.

So far, we've found 12 characters:

- Daisy's sister - ("Flip Decision")
- Donald's uncle Ludwig von Drake - ("Flowers are Flowers")
- Donald's cousin Mehitabel Mudhen - ("Collection Crisis"/"Tax Collectors")
- Grandma's uncle Eider - ("Gold of the '49ers")
- Scrooge's ancestor King Scrooge-Shah - ("King Scrooge the First")
- Donald's ancestor Prince Donduk - ("King Scrooge the First")
- 3 unnamed Princes of Sagbad - ("King Scrooge the First")
- Daisy's aunt Drusilla - ("The Not-So-Ancient Mariner")
- Gladstone's relative Susiebelle Swan - ("The Gilded Man")
- Donald's uncle Marmaduke Mallard - ("The Sunken Yacht")

That means there are still 8 characters left to discover, 4 of which were unseen. We're looking for:

- 2 Scottish ancestors
- 1 Spanish ancestor
- 1 heroic American ancestor
- 1 unexpected Scottish relative
- 1 invoked aunt
- 2 relatives of Daisy's

Quote from user: Robb_KHe would then be Donald's "Great, Great Uncle" (over, over uncle! Ha! Ha!).
Curiously, in Dutch a great grandfather is called "overgrootvader", but a great granduncle is an "achteroudoom". A great great grandfather becomes the even more curious "betovergrootvader", which makes one suspect there might be magic involved. ("Betoveren" = "to bewitch".)

Ah, clues! Sherlock Duckfan's on the job! And... I've got it! Maybe a bit farfetched, but in "Whatever happened to Scrooge McDuck?", Chisel McSue claims to be the heir of Uncle Scrooge. He's not, of course, and it happened in a future timeline that never will be, but they're both Barks characters and thus he has more backup than the fake uncle Marmaduke. QED, and all the Latin stuff.

Betovergrootvader is used because, when the word was coined, no one could live that long, lest magic was used to make it possible.

Farfetched, indeed. :P We're looking for characters that have been family members right from their first appearance. Characters that were retroactively made into family members don't count.

That must be it! ;) It's nevertheless conceivable that 80-year-old man would become betovergrootvader to a newborn baby, though. But we digress.

Quote from user: ArildPoncey De Loon?

Daisy's mother?

Captain D. Duck Esq, the Pilgrim?

There are no indications that Poncey de Loon was even remotely related to The Ducks in Donald's ancestry. The fact that de Loon was a marshbirdlike person, and Donald's family was made up of ducklike, cootlike and gooselike people indicates that the closest they might be is being of a similar racial stock (in the wide sense (such as both families being "Caucasians" or both being "of African origin" or both being "Oriental(East Asian)". For me, it is very unlikely that de Loon (or "chicken" or marshbird) Gyro Gearloose is related to Donald.

Except from Carl Barks' words (Grandma Duck): "I was reading in a history book last night, Scrooge, about a distant cousin of us Ducks, Poncey De Loon,...".

I stand corrected. I did not remember that. Never-the-less, if he were a cousin 15 times removed, we would need an awfully big tree to find the connection.

Correct! :)

Quote from user: ArildDaisy's mother?
Correct! :/ ??? This character was certainly on my list, but it's debatable how and if she's related to Daisy. The mailbox indicates that we're at Daisy's own house, so she could be a visiting family member. But perhaps she's just the housekeeper. On the other hand, a domestic would probably refer to her patron as "Miss Duck" instead of "Daisy", so a mother, grandmother or aunt seems the safest bet.

Quote from user: ArildCaptain D. Duck Esq, the Pilgrim?
Very clever, but alas! Did you notice the stack of comic books? That proves the guy isn't a genuine 17th-century Pilgrim. He's just our regular 20th-century Donald in a costume. ;) I wonder how you came by this name? Is it from a source or did you invent it yourself?
Arild
A long shot, I know ;)
D. DUCK, ESQ.- WHOSE ANCESTORS CAME OVER BESIDE THE MAYFLOWER." Barks continues (adding an improved title) in pencil at the bottom "WHOSE ANCESTORS FLEW OVER AHEAD OF THE MAYFLOWER!

I hoped for a better proof in this story - The Terrible Turkey , but there isn't any.
Maybe the gun and the clothes are inherited... ;)

According to a family tree drawn by Tony Strobl, Gyro is indeed part of the family.

Quote from user: ArildGrandma Duck: "I was reading in a history book last night, Scrooge, about a distant cousin of us Ducks, Poncey de Loon."
This quote suggests that Grandma considers herself a Duck, which I take to mean she considers herself a part of her husband's family. But then again, Carl Barks never specified anything about Grandma's marriage or maiden name.

The "15 times" are based on 30-year-generations over a time span of 1960-1513 = 447 years, I presume?

What I get from this, is that the drawing represents Donald Duck and that Carl Barks added a line about his ancestors, specifying that they arrived in America even before the Mayflower did. That means you found a Barks source containing a reference to ancestors that were not in Rosa's Family Tree. For this, you are awarded an extra bonus point. :)

Daisy's grandmother?

I think she is not Grandma Duck.

I certainly hope NOT! There seems to be entirely too much interbreeding in the "Duck Family" as it is. Maybe that's why Fethry Duck and Moby Duck (Donalds first (or second) cousins) are idiots, and Donald is often so simple-minded. What if Daisy and Donald get married and have children? They might have horrible diseases or mental retardation.
Lars Jensen
Fethry and Moby aren't idiots.
Dutch Duckfan Down Under
I doubt Daisy and Donald are related. Aren't their thousands of people in America called Smith or Jones? And I also doubt there is interbreeding in the Duck family. The only one who is genetically odd would be Gladstone Gander (aw, come on! There has got to be some explanation for his luck and I'm not buying the whole 'lady Luck is in love with him' story).
