Dear DON:
A few years ago, I picked up a Greatest Superman Stories Ever Told
hardback. Thinking back, was that your name mentioned in the list of
consultants? Today, I was discussing the current state of affairs
involved in the Superman comics, and I found myself reminiscing about the
pre-Crisis Superman. So much has changed in the past few years, and I
doubt if for the most part it has been for the better.
Well, anyway, LOS #12 was superb. A truly great ending to the series, and I
look forward to the followup stories in the years ahead. One thought: Did
you ever think of having the reunion between Scrooge with Donald and the
boys being a bit more "sentimental?"
Last week, I was watching one of the numerous versions of A Christmas
Carol on tape, and I found myself touched when Ebenezer finally
recounciled with his nephew Fred, and their family (the background music
was great).
As I was seeing this, I wondered if you had ever thought of including
something like that in the final conciliation.
Or maybe that would have been too mushy?
Anyway, hope you enjoy your snowbound weather for as long as you like.

comics, there's another very rare item... DONALD DUCK - KITE MAKER. Which is
a miniature storybook with text and illustrations, all based on that one old
Barks story that end with Donald's car being carried off by a giant kite.
And speaking of that book -- it was one of the lil' surprises that I found
in my mail one day, sent by Barry Branvold. The rascal.
(And of course there are various Big Little Books and other old
books that reprinted Barks comic book stories, but that's another subject.)
PEKKA and JYRKI:
I surely don't know all there is to know about Helsinki Media --
they are a partnership with Egmont. But I do know that the first two
episodes of the "Lo$" were no different than the rest. They were all done
for the same division of Egmont, and there's no reason that I know of that
would have prevented HM from using them. The reason I think may have been a
misunderstanding of the LENGTH of the chapter(s). This seems to have
prevented several other Egmont branches, such as Sweden, from using those
two chapters, when they easilly could have. But the main office originally
presented those two chapters together, and there may have been some
misunderstanding by the publishers that it was all designed as one long
story. And of course, it wasn't -- it was two separate chapters just like
all the other separate chapters.
I'll ask about it and see what happened. I'd hate to think they
would leave those two chapters out of a collected "Lo$" book. (I'm sure they
wouldn't!)

I was in that convention too and I can't recall any of that.

which contain several stories to choose.
I suppose chapters 1&2 were not part of any of those 'standard'
Egmont 'packages'.
According to our database those parts were both published in issue

We can begin here in Holland, Harry! Yesterday my brother gave me a
postcard with a Mau Heymans 1-pager on it (H93213). He got that one for
free, like those many other promotional free postcards you can get here
in Holland. On my brother's school there is such a rack with cards, so
that's why he was able to get one.
I asked my brother for more cards, but they were all gone already.
So, if you also want that card, you'll have to look for it yourself
(I'll also look around for more of those cards for you and other
interested people).
BTW. I don't know if this gag is already published outside Holland,
but I think it's a very good one to be included in a Gladstone.

In various stories, the character is being referred to as "Cousin Fethry"

I only know that the Dutch editor got chapter 3 from Egmont before they
got chapter 1 and 2. The different "packages" that out Finns discussed
seem a logical explanation for this.
But the Dutch editors *knew* they were going to get chapters 1 and 2 as well.
They decided to publish chapter 3 first, because they wanted to publish
a Rosa story and no other stories were available.

I find Heymans' art in this one to be very, very Barkslike --
uncommonly so for Heymans. When I first read it in that same German
publication Gilbert mentioned, I translated it immediately, but after
I had done that, I looked at it again and felt the story itself to be
a real disappointment. I'd never thought about it while I was working
on the story, but there were pages and pages of the ducks wandering
around in the desert without any very funny gags or
personality-building moments. Do you agree, Harry?
DDA 37, to be published in two weeks
will not actually contain my "Pork-Barrel Politics." Due to
space considerations (apparently they weren't able to bump as many ads
as they had planned to), the story has (like John Lustig's "Peace in
Pieces") been pushed forward two or three issues. But we will see it,
as it's been lettered and colored now and is ready for use.
Still, DDA 37 will contain a good Shelly/Pat Block story and
John told me that, as he remembered it, one of your translations
behind it, Dwight. I'll look forward to it.

Well, if we're discussing storybooks not by Barks but based on Barks
comics, there's another very rare item... DONALD DUCK - KITE MAKER. Which is
a miniature storybook with text and illustrations, all based on that one old
Barks story that end with Donald's car being carried off by a giant kite.
And speaking of that book -- it was one of the lil' surprises that I found
in my mail one day, sent by Barry Branvold. The rascal.
(And of course there are various Big Little Books and other old
books that reprinted Barks comic book stories, but that's another subject.)
PEKKA and JYRKI:
I surely don't know all there is to know about Helsinki Media --
they are a partnership with Egmont. But I do know that the first two
episodes of the "Lo$" were no different than the rest. They were all done
for the same division of Egmont, and there's no reason that I know of that
would have prevented HM from using them. The reason I think may have been a
misunderstanding of the LENGTH of the chapter(s). This seems to have
prevented several other Egmont branches, such as Sweden, from using those
two chapters, when they easilly could have. But the main office originally
presented those two chapters together, and there may have been some
misunderstanding by the publishers that it was all designed as one long
story. And of course, it wasn't -- it was two separate chapters just like
all the other separate chapters.
I'll ask about it and see what happened. I'd hate to think they
would leave those two chapters out of a collected "Lo$" book. (I'm sure they
wouldn't!)
JAMES:
Yes, that was me who was one of the special advisors on THE GREATEST
SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD. I have always been known as a great Superman fan
(through my old fanzine q&a articles). In fact, the "continuity" that I put
into the Duck comics, and which offends some readers when they think I'm too
influenced by Marvel comics -- that comes NOT from Marvels, but from the
Mort Weisinger editted years of Superman comics.
It never occured to me to make the "reunion" between Donald and the
Nephews and $crooge more sentimental... since it wasn't a reunion. None of
them had ever met. Donald saw $crooge once when he was very young, but that
was all. So there was no possible emotional connection there. I tried to
establish an emotional relationship between the Nephews and $crooge with the
comment about "disappearing relatives"... but there was no emotional link
there yet. I tried for a "dramatic" scene by enlarging that panel from 1/8
page to 1/2 page in the Gladstone version. (I just wish the color hadn't
gone off-register for that special scene! @#$%&)
Besides, some readers already think I make my stories too mushy.
They seem to want less human emotion in the Ducks. But not to worry...I only
know how to do my stories my way. They can always read the other issues.

Again, about the Lo$ 1&2 in Finland:
As far as I know, the reason those episodes are not printed
in Finland has nothing to do with 'different publishing companies'.
I was in that convention too and I can't recall any of that.
The explanation Pekka wrote is the correct one.
As Pekka wrote our publisher buys the material in 'packages'
which contain several stories to choose.
I suppose chapters 1&2 were not part of any of those 'standard'
Egmont 'packages'.
According to our database those parts were both published in issue
33/1992 in Danmark and Norge. So that must be some kind of
'special' issue. (And propably a special 'package' too!)

I second your request to avoid using abreviations without first
establishing what the abbreviations stand for. The standard practice is to
introduce the abbreviation parentheically immediately after using a title or
phrase, signalling that the abbreviation will become the standard form of
reference thereafter. For example, "Tales from the Crypt (TftC) was a comic
book before it was a television show. Nowadays, TftC is likely enjoyed by
many folks who have never heard of the comic."
I realize that many folks here have seen the acronyms many, many
times and understand fully what they stand for and repeated typing of the
same thing seems needless, but common courtesy, not to mention standard
usage, expects that something would be defined AT LEAST ONCE for the
initiate. We, all of us, were new to these things once. Why not make it
easier for the next person?
I'd like to point out this problem is rampant online. It's not just
folks here who are accidently and needlessly exclusionary.

We can begin here in Holland, Harry! Yesterday my brother gave me a
postcard with a Mau Heymans 1-pager on it (H93213). He got that one for
free, like those many other promotional free postcards you can get here
in Holland. On my brother's school there is such a rack with cards, so
that's why he was able to get one.
I asked my brother for more cards, but they were all gone already.
So, if you also want that card, you'll have to look for it yourself
(I'll also look around for more of those cards for you and other
interested people).
BTW. I don't know if this gag is already published outside Holland,
but I think it's a very good one to be included in a Gladstone.

Well, if we're discussing storybooks not by Barks but based on Barks
comics, there's another very rare item... DONALD DUCK - KITE MAKER. Which is
a miniature storybook with text and illustrations, all based on that one old
Barks story that end with Donald's car being carried off by a giant kite.
And speaking of that book -- it was one of the lil' surprises that I found
in my mail one day, sent by Barry Branvold. The rascal.
(And of course there are various Big Little Books and other old
books that reprinted Barks comic book stories, but that's another subject.)
PEKKA and JYRKI:
I surely don't know all there is to know about Helsinki Media --
they are a partnership with Egmont. But I do know that the first two
episodes of the "Lo$" were no different than the rest. They were all done
for the same division of Egmont, and there's no reason that I know of that
would have prevented HM from using them. The reason I think may have been a
misunderstanding of the LENGTH of the chapter(s). This seems to have
prevented several other Egmont branches, such as Sweden, from using those
two chapters, when they easilly could have. But the main office originally
presented those two chapters together, and there may have been some
misunderstanding by the publishers that it was all designed as one long
story. And of course, it wasn't -- it was two separate chapters just like
all the other separate chapters.
I'll ask about it and see what happened. I'd hate to think they
would leave those two chapters out of a collected "Lo$" book. (I'm sure they
wouldn't!)

Yes, that was me who was one of the special advisors on THE GREATEST
SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD. I have always been known as a great Superman fan
(through my old fanzine q&a articles). In fact, the "continuity" that I put
into the Duck comics, and which offends some readers when they think I'm too
influenced by Marvel comics -- that comes NOT from Marvels, but from the
Mort Weisinger editted years of Superman comics.
It never occured to me to make the "reunion" between Donald and the
Nephews and $crooge more sentimental... since it wasn't a reunion. None of
them had ever met. Donald saw $crooge once when he was very young, but that
was all. So there was no possible emotional connection there. I tried to
establish an emotional relationship between the Nephews and $crooge with the
comment about "disappearing relatives"... but there was no emotional link
there yet. I tried for a "dramatic" scene by enlarging that panel from 1/8
page to 1/2 page in the Gladstone version. (I just wish the color hadn't
gone off-register for that special scene! @#$%&)
Besides, some readers already think I make my stories too mushy.
They seem to want less human emotion in the Ducks. But not to worry...I only
know how to do my stories my way. They can always read the other issues.

As far as I know, the reason those episodes are not printed
in Finland has nothing to do with 'different publishing companies'.
I was in that convention too and I can't recall any of that.
The explanation Pekka wrote is the correct one.
As Pekka wrote our publisher buys the material in 'packages'
which contain several stories to choose.
I suppose chapters 1&2 were not part of any of those 'standard'
Egmont 'packages'.
According to our database those parts were both published in issue
33/1992 in Danmark and Norge. So that must be some kind of
'special' issue. (And propably a special 'package' too!)

We can begin here in Holland, Harry! Yesterday my brother gave me a
postcard with a Mau Heymans 1-pager on it (H93213). He got that one for
free, like those many other promotional free postcards you can get here
in Holland. On my brother's school there is such a rack with cards, so
that's why he was able to get one.
I asked my brother for more cards, but they were all gone already.
So, if you also want that card, you'll have to look for it yourself
(I'll also look around for more of those cards for you and other
interested people).
BTW. I don't know if this gag is already published outside Holland,
but I think it's a very good one to be included in a Gladstone.
