What?-o Are you saying there is no more room for imagination
in the modern world? No adventure left in this planet now in the era
of satellites and networks? I'm afraid I have to disagree. Even as we
communicate new kinds of animals are found in the Amazon jungles.
A few years back a whole new tribe was discovered in Australia. A large
portion of the oceans are uncharted under surface. Some fossilized
bacteria was found in a asteroid coming from Mars. The nature of
time and space is yet partly unknown. The history of the world is full
of unexplained mysteries: Who were the Sea Peoples that caused the fall
of Egypt? Was there precolumbian contact between America and the other
continents? What caused the sudden extinction of the dinosaurs?
Well, I'm sure I made my point. Movies are made all the time
about great adventures trying to find the monster of Loch Ness or
a sasquatch. Comics are written about the secrets of the Lost Library
of Alexandria and the Secret Charts of Columbus.

Oh, yes. But there's so much other things that could be done
instead of or alongside with those. Most of the current dimension/time/
space travel stories of the nowaday Disney comics could be made with

sumpin'. Anyway, Barks sometimes showed Scrooge and the stuff in
the past but never used a time machine.

I actually thought that it could've well been Earth. Which kinda
gave an extra star to the story. They hadn't moved to another universe
with a bunch of fish talking English but had just been reduced to the size
of goldfish and sent to some English speaking place ON EARTH where the fish
had somehow developed speech and had learned it from their former owners
before they had left the place.

This week's Dutch DD weekly happens to have a story where Donald
thinks he's traveling into the future. But Gyro's time travel machine was

"Humor and Fantasy in Comics"
Washington, DC - September 18-20, 1997
* * * We are now encouraging all those interested to submit
- proposals for 20-minutes presentations (send a 1-2 page abstract)
- proposals for sessions, symposia, etc.
* * * In the previous years, ICAF has attracted participants ---
scholars, journal editors, artists, critics --- from all regions
of the US and various foreign countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland,
Canada, Germany, Denmark...). Last year's guest
of honor was Claire Bretecher, alongside other French comics luminaries
such as Jean-Claude Denis and Pierre Christin.
* * * This year, ICAF will coordinate its efforts with Small Press Expo,
a yearly conference for comic artists and
publishers in Bethesda, MD.

Interesting. This Fooey conspiracy is greater than anyone thought at
first... I've added Marco's evidence to the other ones I have -- now
seven different stories! This must be "S 78120", and in the Database
there are no other publications of it than this one in Italy.

by DcD, though. But I had no rules that understood "I-AT" codes. Now

Old Song Reference in Barks

Dwight posted a very interesting piece about musical references in Barks'
stories...
Oh, yes: After the Ball (by Chas. K. Harris) would *certainly* have
remained popular in c. 1898 -- it was one of the *very* biggest hits in
it's time, and is still played today; actually it's one of my favourite
waltzes!
What I want to add to this discourse is one of the few musical bobos by
Barks. In "Lost in the Andes", the first native that Donald and the kids
run into is singing "Dixie", and then changes over into "Carry Me Back to
Old Virginny". We are also told that Rhutt Betlah stayed in the valley
between 1863 and 1868. Now, "Dixie" was published in 1859, and I find it
hard to think that a southerner wouldn't know it well enough by 1863 :-)
"Virginny", however, was not published until 1878 so there really is no way
Prof. Betlah could have thaught that'n to the Square people!
Just my tuppence'orth!
