This is slightly off-subject and maybe of no interest to most
regulars, especially the non-USA members. There is a tv
show here called "JAG" and on tonight's episode there was
a reference to the Junior Woodchucks (I won't try to put it in
context by writing out the entire scene). It was just such a
shock that the writer(s) would use such an obscure (here)
reference instead of the "Boy Scouts". I also chuckled at the
fact that this network (CBS) competes against ABC, which
is literally owned by Disney. Of course, most people at Disney
would not even know what JW's are. *back to lurking*

]] From the Department of Forestry:
There has been some great talk about characters, and clearing
up of confusion surrounding them! I know it would be nice if
there was a centralized resource for story-writers & artists
to be more consistant, but for now there isn't. It seems that=20
Egmont, with David's help, is striving for such, but they don't
have a lot of sway, apparently, with other publishers, so most
continuity is only illusory at best! Thanks to folks like Don
Rosa and those at Gladstone, Donald Duck's family tree has
stablized, but there is still some disparagement surrounding
the "missing" relatives... such as Ludwig von Drake, Daisy
Duck and her own nieces April, May and June, Scrooge's brother
Gideon, and to a lesser extent, whether Fethry's fiance Gloria,
and his own nephew, Dugan (Bequinho), as well as Gus Goose's
nephew "Sock" or even Dickie [(Paperetta Ye-Ye) is she Goldie's
granddaughter or niece? don't answer that, the question is=20
rhetorical..] belong on the Duck Family tree. Van Horn's tree
even included Magica, Glomgold and Gyro (which would then have
to include Newton)! I know many records even qualified Grandma
Duck (Elvira) as Scrooge's sister! As a basic structure, I am
pretty happy with the Rosa Duck Family Tree!... I would just
like to see an extended version which includes the rest, even
some of the more obscure relatives could be included to fill
in gaps (see Eta Beta's website for some of the fun relatives:

Hmmmm. It appears dear Eta has his site off line right now,
but you can go to the URL and bookmark it for later viewing!
It really is fun...

As for the universes of Disney based out of the different=20
publishing houses have differing perspectives on where Duckburg
is, and even who actually lives there! :-)

Thank you to everyone (David, Francois, Eta, Arthur, etc.) for
your input on the Forest Kids (Arthur, Meana, Junir and Li'l Bear)
and about their elders, though it would seem there are still some
unclear issues surrounding Alfred's origin (is he an outgrowth of
Izzy?) and who is the reigning holder for the title "Brer Wolf"?

One of the best clarifications surrounds Meana's relation to Li'l
Wolf, which should now be understood as "Not his sister, or even
his cousin." Meana is Li'l Wolf's girlfriend, though certainly
not his fiance.... yet, anyhow. :-)

I also understand, now, that some publishers, especially those in
France, have transformed the Forest Universe into a softer, more
kid-friendly environment, and thus greatly altered the personalities
of the Uncle Remus and 3 Little Pigs characters... sort of "defanging"
Zeke and Brer Fox, if you will.

Apparently Brazil has gone even further by making the Forest Universe
into another "Duckburg-like" town, creating strange new personalities
for the primary characters where Bears love Foxes and visa versa...
I'm curious if this version of the Forest Universe still exists or
if they ceased writing this type of stories years ago?

Whew! Fortunately I have Mega 2000 #500 so I have perhaps the=20
most recent issue featuring Brer Groundhog. Is this his *first*
appearance? I found no other documented appearances for him in=20
the INDUCKS.

(I'm in the process of documenting Disney Kids right now, so=20
Brer Groundhog fills the bill)

That's sort of how I saw the *driving* thing too... The Forest=20
Universe is pretty much a rural/argicultural environment (we are
always seeing someone planting a vegetable garden or some-such=20
farm-like thing. And, typically, those communities rely on the
ability to move about freely, and have a tendancy to structure
their own laws [such as allowing kids to drive (and sometimes
drink) early (bad in combination) or to refuse a military draft
if they are the oldest male child/family support, etc. in order
to continue the family farm].

I imagine, at times, as I think Marco(?) pointed out, that the
Forest Universe is probably just on the outskirts of the rural
part of Duckburg... Grandma Duck's farm falling within the
rural part of Duckburg. Wandering by foot, horse or car too
far from Duckburg, and well OFF of any established road system,
one just might find themselves meeting up with the Three Little
Pigs or Brer Fox. I get the feeling Hard Haid Moe lives somewhere
between Grandma Duck's Farm and the Forest Village, and that
Mad Madam Mim's shack, and maybe the Beagle Boys' hide out is
somewhere out there too. Though, I always felt that Magica's
castle was closer to Italy. Maybe even an island off the coast
of Sicily? Since Mim is often depicted as her housemate, I guess
she has a secret portal that allow quick transport between=20

O.K., I did some research and I find that Ermengarda made at least=20
four appearances:

1) B 73170 "Restaurando O Restaurante" (Brazil: ALP 5, PD 1144)
2) B 790156 "O Dan=E7arino" (Brazil: AD 106, DE 92)
3) B 810239 "Um Inventor Rom=E2ntico" (Brazil: AN 1, DE 107)
4) B 850037 "Que Programa!" (Brazil: Video Disney 1)=20

However, I would still like some verification that she is indeed=20
the same character as "Matilda" who appeared in "The Real Cool=20
Canoe" from W WDC 310-05, which could then be established as her
"First (named) Appearance", and her name as "Matilda" in the=20
database. Anders seems to confirm this, but I am not familiar=20
with the mentioned discussion concerning a "splash page". Are=20
any scans of Ermengarda available?

If Ermengarda and Matilda are the same, I would add a sixth=20
appearance for her. Her "look" is far too unique for the similar
looking crane-woman to be anyone else in "Daisy Duck's Diary"
(FC 948-03). Of course this story also features another recurring
female Duck I've tracked name Dora, but since she is not really=20
prominent, and isn't anyone's girlfriend, I'm not sure what to do=20
with her. Matilda/Ermengarda, on the other hand, like Glory-Bee
(Goofy's GF), Gilda (Nestor's GF) and, even moreso, Gloria=20
(Fethry's GF) have been deemed significant, as they should. I=20
have scans of Matilda from both stories if anyone wants to trade=20
or post their's of Ermengarda. I have posted some images of

There is a slight difference in the overall appearance, but,=20
considering Tony Strobl drew both, it could be insinuated that
he meant her to be the same character (simply drawing upon his
own model sheets?)...Nov. 1958 (unnamed in FC 948) and July 1966
(named: Matilda in WDC 310). She may have appeared elsewhere,
but I haven't spotted her....yet. :-)

Overall she has a very unique look for the Disney Universe, so=20
I would be interested in seeing how Ermengarda matches up.

Not having either of these stories I have no idea about the robot
girlfriend. I do know of a "Robotica" from an episode of Ducktales
who was created by Gyro as a maid for Uncle Scrooge. She fell in
love with Gizmoduck and, not knowing Gizmoduck was really Fenton
Crackshell. Fenton had to double date her and his OWN girlfriend,
Gandra Dee, who, likewise, didn't know Fenton was really Gizmoduck.
It was a pretty silly, but still fun episode, and I was reminded=20
of it from this discussion.

Sadly we will not be seeing this in the USA. I think I speak for
many on the list who will NOT have the good fortune of seeing this
article/new story featuring Phooey, when I request a summary of
the article and/or even a scan of the comic story with synopsis?

foreign editions....there is a current eBay auction of the much prized and
sought after UNCLE SCROOGE #179.

In a Very Good condition, according to the price guide, it should be worth
$13.50....
current bid ......$84.50 !!

This IS the most difficult book to find for a completist.

In Brazilian stories, she appeared several times and always
as Gyro's girlfriend. I know these ones:

B 910159.

Joe Carioca lived in Duckburg just in the early 60s.
Since the early 70s he lives in a Rio de Janeiro's fictional suburb
named "Vila Xurupita" (not a separate town). And all other
characters live in Duckburg, which doesn't have any nationality.

Oops! I forgot that! This is *not* the same character.
The first one (B 830175) was a robot invented by a scientist
who disguised it as a perfect female duck in order to surprise the
audience and judges of an inventors contest. (Well, Gyro did!) ;-)
The second one (B 850070) was a star warrior who
asks for Gyro to help her to recover a certain power device. But
Gyro never knew she was a robot (she returned to outer space).

Finally... if any of you want scans of any character above
mentioned, just ask!

Not just collectors. People interested in reading specific stories might
pay high prices on occasion. I paid 2000 drs (~$6.50) for an issue of
MIKY MAOYS in the 400s range, just because I wanted desperately to read
the story it contained, which I remembered reading as a child. The same
goes for U$ #211, reprinting Barks' "The Prize of Pizarro", which I bought
from Gladstone for an outrageous amount, after they "discovered a stash"
(or words to that effect) of out of print comic books, among which was U$
#211, which was their first issue to go out of print. Although I do not
regret making these purchases, I cant't help feeling that the latter case
was an example of the kind of speculation that Archontis mentioned. :-(

BTW, I know that that U$ comic book is probably worth even more now,
but I wouldn't dream of selling it at any price. The childhood memories
it helps me relive cannot be bought for any amount of money. I guess
this disqualifies me as a collector!
