Honestly, I can't argue this fact, as I suspect it myself. But, it does prove that there are at least some newer readers. Regardless of the book that it's printed in, I do think that it's important for there to be an *affordable* source for young/new readers to gain access to these stories. From what I've seen, the easiest reprint of Only a Poor Old Man that I've seen is the one in US 195, and anyone who's seen that knows that it's so muddy and unattractive that it buries the charm of the story. Personaly, I think I've got about 6 different copies of that story, and I could live without another one, but knowing that a few readers (at least) will read it for the first time makes it worthwhile to me.

I agree to a certain extent (the new WDCS issues are lacking Murray, which I'd love to see), and I think it's just a matter of the Gemstone staff getting the photo-stats from Western for some of these lesser seen gems. Still, I was worried that the first few prestige issues were so full of new material (much of it that I'm not particularly fond of, though there has been some unsuspected non-Rosa, Barks, Van Horn gems).

I think that the 32 page titles should contain an *occasional* Barks story, but I don't see that happening at the moment. There's no better way to expose young audiences to classic material than by slipping it into the titles that are geared toward them once in awhile.

lol. I think the DDA covers are the best looking of the Gemstone line.

Interesting. I didn't know Western still kept photo-stats. I thought maybe
they had gone to Disney itself(after so long with Western not publishing Disney
comics).

You're strongly implying Gemstone are deceiving their customers in order
to justify reprinting Barks stories. What's your source for this?

And happy holidays to everybody.

In Barks's case, at least for several of his stories, direct reproductions
of the original comics seem to be the only way to get close as possible to
his original art.

Just two examples are the smugsnorkle squatty story (WDC 70-02) and the
wild turkey hunting story (WDC 87-02). In USA reprints, these stories
are partly redrawn.

Of the smugsnorkle squatty story, panels 9.5, 9.6, 10.1 and 10.2 are
redrawn. Of the wild turkey hunting story, pages 3, 5 and 6 are redrawn.

These are just two examples why I prefer facsimile reproductions. Not to
mention the common practice re-retouching that happens when stories are
reprinted.

In the Netherlands, they're publishing facsimile reproductions of the
first years of the Dutch weekly. *Without* restorations. I'm surprised
by the relatively clear quality of these comics.

And apart from getting as close to Barks's original art as possible,
the old colouring add a nostalgic "classical" atmosphere to his stories,
which I like very much.

This is ridiculous nonsense.

I agree that there should be an affordable source for young/new readers
to get old stories. That would be great. But why does it need to be
done by reproducing re-reprints in a prestige format comic which also
contains fresh, new material, like stories by Rosa and Van Horn?

I think comics/albums should be divided into "fresh-only" and
"reprint-only" series, *unless* the reprints come from a better and/or
more faithful source, in comparison with the previous reprints.

COA mentions the following reprints for the USA:

Gladstone Comics Album 4 [1980s/1990s]
One Shots (a.k.a. Four Color Comics) 456 (1953)
The Best of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck 1 (1966)
Uncle Scrooge 142 (1977)
Uncle Scrooge, His Life and Times 1 (1981)
Carl Barks Library (hardcover, b/w) 3 (1984)
Uncle Scrooge Adventures 26 (1994)
The Adventures of Uncle Scrooge McDuck in Color 2 (1996)

If the old audience is being chased away by having to buy exactly the
same material twice, they will stop buying the comics. This will result
in less sales, resulting in the comic being discontinued. This way,
*neither* old or young audiences will be exposed to any new comic book
publications anymore.

Only time will tell. Apart from complaining, all I can do is stop buying
material that I don't find worthwhile/affordable enough for my budget.

I didn't necessarily mean auction sites alone. I should have mentioned
the second-hand market as a whole. And via internet, it's relatively
easy to find old publications of material by - for example - Barks,
Rosa, Van Horn, etc.

Trying to get old comics on the second-hand market is a very important
(and enjoyable) part of comic book collecting, at least here in The
Netherlands. And so far, most Barks stories are still available in
some form or another. Also in English.

"Yikes! How can anything that stuffs itself with HAY be so HARD?"
Which Barks story?
Hint #1: cowboys
Hint #2: Donald's nephews
Hint #3: wolf

I think every spammer should get 39 lashes each, just for a start.
Even during Christmas time!

Nowadays, only 10 percent of my email is really intended for me...

As far as I know - no he wasn't. He was also very suprised when I told him
about this fact few months ago.

Sorry, I have no contact in these countries.

By the way, Merry Christmas "to everyone who celebrates it!" *. And I wish
all of you Happy New Year full of Disney comics, with reprints of rare
stories and new hot stuff!

From the start, i thought of cowboys. This somewhat rings a bell.

I had thought of Donald at first.

>>>> Hint #3: wolf

I've been thinking of the Grandma's farm story for some time; in one of
the episodes, the nephews play cowboys and ride sheep, and find them hard
once Grandma has shaved their wool away. This wolf hint seems to confirm my
guess-- the big bad wolf rustles sheep; at the end, Grandma leaves
saddle-shaped spots of wool on the sheep for the boys to ride.
I don't remember the original title. I think it was reprinted in Gladstone
album which I missed.
I would very much like such stories as this and the Junior Woodchuck stories
to be reprinted.

Have a very nice day!

Doesn't DCML have some kind of spam filter?
