I don't know what has happened after the changings between those addresses
but I simply get nothing but *empty* digests! Yesterday and today I've got
digests containing *nothing*! Is this because everyone has got very mixed-

Maybe a welcome-message consisting of two chapters is better? Then
you'll have at first a chapter titled "WHAT YOU *NEED* TO KNOW" in
which is clearly stated how to unsubscribe, etc. The second chapter
after that can then be titled "ABOUT THE MAILING-LIST" with all the
extra information in it. (If you want I'll send an example of what I
mean in private.)
Question: How does Smart-list work with unsubscribe-messages sent to
the club? If I'd gave this letter the subject "unsubscribe", would I
then be automatically unsubscribed? (Could be important to know if
one wants to write *about* unsubscription.)

Well, it's here. WDC&S 601 is, on all counts, a show-stopping
piece. It is no longer "just" a comic, but basically a magazine
showcasing the history of Disney comics. Of the 64 pages in the
comic, eight contain (IMHO very interesting) historical articles, some
quite opinionated fanzine-type material. Then there are eight pages
reprinting, in full, the first MICKEY MOUSE MAGAZINE issue (1933) two
original pages to one WDC&S page. And, 45 pages of other comics (not
counting some complete strips in the MM Magazine section and one
complete one illustrating an article). There are only two pages of
ads inside the comic, so basically the excess archival material
REPLACES the ads.
The only thing I don't care for format-wise is the fact that
the comic has a title page now, like an album. (This seems to have
been done to enable there to be a contents page on the reverse side,
which also contains a Barks painting repro and some textual notes.)
I can quibble with a few of the stories chosen for the issue,
but most of them are excellent and the MM MAGAZINE reprint is
hilarious (as well as rather bizarre). I'd recommend this to
anyone... I hope the new format is as successful with most people
as it is with me.
I've put a complete description of WDC&S 601's contents on my
"Current Gladstones" web-page. I also fired up the scanner, so
there's a picture of the comic's beautiful cover on the page, too.

TOY STORY
My sons and I went to see Toy Story today and it comes highly recommended. I
can't remember when I laughed so much at a movie. Amazing graphics/animation
and a truly wonderful script. Everything you've read about this is true. It's
a Don't Miss.

It might seem "interesting" to you to read a continued-version of
one of my long stories... but it just isn't how the story was ever intended.
I mean, 8 page portions, TWO MONTHS apart! Everywhere else on Earth that
uses the 3-part version of these stories uses the chapters only ONE WEEK
apart... I wouldn't doubt that many readers might just wait the two weeks
and read all 3 chapters at once. I REALLY hope they don't do this sort of
thing again.
I still haven't seen a copy myself. Somebody has told me that the
balloons which are supposed to contain the words to the old "Lydia the
Tattooed Lady" song are strangely over-large, as if the words to the tune
are not being fully used, perhaps for copyright reasons. I sure hope that's
not the case, since that problem can be avoided in ways other than deleting
most of the copy. And I also hear that background signage is in
computer-lettering, which would look as bad as the signage sometimes looks
in European editions where the sign on the "Red Dog Saloon" in the old west
town is typeset. I saw an advance copy of "Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies"
from Gladstone (which they retitled by leaving out the first "and" so that
it would no longer have the poetic sound), and saw all the signage in 1877
Glasgow to be identicle computerized comic-book dialogue balloon lettering
-- and I asked them PLEASE to reletter such stuff. Surely they can use the
computer to letter only the balloons and do the signage and sound-effects by
hand.

the previous Digest? Probably I was -- I find the new Digest style confusing
in that regards. I see a few more instances of messages that aren't properly
opened or closed clearly... and I hope the Digests can soon again be closed
with "end of Digest" to tell us that we have received the whole thing and it
wasn't cut off by a faulty transmission or some other computer problem.
Anyway, it may just be how you worded your sentence, but you do
understand that the last page of "CoBM" DOES take place AFTER the 12th
chapter of the "Lo$". You seemed to be saying that you had assumed this was
the case, but now decided you were wrong.
But you happened to quote the one panel that prevents my story from
blending perfectly into "CoBM". $crooge is very peppy and happy as he leaves
Bear Mountain, but for the purposes of having my own story make sense, I had
to get him to be old and sour again by the next evening when DD and HDL show
up at his mansion for dinner.

Actually, I found this to be one of his better ones lately.
The most interesting discovery was that the British "modification"
SAVAGED it, which means that when I read it over there last spring, I
thought it was one of Van Horn's worst. Actually, it was a whole lot
better than that. The best since "The Terror of Duckburg" IMHO.

in our mailbox anymore with the new system. But the greatest advantage
you mentioned is that you now will have the time to contribute yourself
here on the club. So... *welcome* Per! ;-)
But... I also have some "complaints". :-(
Why does the new system have so much adresses? If I read your messages
well, we have now *three* adresses. One to contribute on the club, one
request-adress for the digest-mode and one request-adress for the
people who get new mail directly. In the past there were already a lot
of problems with *one* request-adress, so what's the sense of having
*two* of them? Isn't that rather confusing for some people?
You also sent the welcome-messages to the list. To be frankly, I think
they're rather *long* and even boring to read (I already thought that
when I got subscribed). Maybe *that's* why new people skip it. I'd
prefer a welcome-message which is only one "page" long (I mean about 60
lines).
My opinion is that the important thing in the welcome-message has to be
telling how to unsubscribe and now this kind of "drowns" in the message.
The message contains now, for example, an entire paragraph which tells
people to wait a few days before sending their first message, so that
they can see how the conversations are between the members.
What's the use of telling people that with an entire paragraph? Isn't
it enough to tell them that Disney-Comics is about Disney comics only
(which you already did in another paragraph)? I think that this is the
only information they need to know (besides the request-adress). The
people who want to write immediately after they got subscribed, will do
that anyway. They won't wait with that because that long paragraph
tells them to do so.
This was only an example, I also find a lot of other paragraphs rather
long and sometimes not very nescessary.
About the new digests: I still can't say if they're worser or better
than the previous ones. A advantage is now that you can read a certain
letter in the digest immediately instead of having to run through the
entire digest to see it. A negative thing for me is that, if you want to
read the entire digest, you have to push buttons many times to read all
the letters (with the previous digests one only had to press one or two
buttons to read them). Evaluating this *now*, I'd rather prefer the old
digests (or isn't that possible with Smart-list?).
But whatever negative thing I say, I want to mention it again
clearly that I think it's great that you will contribute more yourself
on the club from now on. I'm already waiting for that! ;-)
BTW. If you agree with me that the welcome-messages are rather long,
I'd gladly take over the work from you making a new one. When I've made
one, you'll only have to say if you agree or not (and if not, I'll make
another one). I think you already do enough work with running an adress
for us to meet other Disney comics-fans. (My compliments for that!)

only information they need to know (besides the request-adress). The
people who want to write immediately after they got subscribed, will do
that anyway. They won't wait with that because that long paragraph
tells them to do so.
This was only an example, I also find a lot of other paragraphs rather
long and sometimes not very nescessary.
About the new digests: I still can't say if they're worser or better
than the previous ones. A advantage is now that you can read a certain
letter in the digest immediately instead of having to run through the
entire digest to see it. A negative thing for me is that, if you want to
read the entire digest, you have to push buttons many times to read all
the letters (with the previous digests one only had to press one or two
buttons to read them). Evaluating this *now*, I'd rather prefer the old
digests (or isn't that possible with Smart-list?).
But whatever negative thing I say, I want to mention it again
clearly that I think it's great that you will contribute more yourself
on the club from now on. I'm already waiting for that! ;-)
BTW. If you agree with me that the welcome-messages are rather long,
I'd gladly take over the work from you making a new one. When I've made
one, you'll only have to say if you agree or not (and if not, I'll make
another one). I think you already do enough work with running an adress
for us to meet other Disney comics-fans. (My compliments for that!)

I get the impression that all of you people must already know each other,
and only want to talk to each other. I got much better responses when
posting my Duck messages on rec.arts.comics.strips, and that wasn't even an
appropriate venue. If this is really a private group, just say so and
I'll go away. I don't like being ignored. Evidently others don't either,
judging from the number and hysteria level of people scratching and
clawing to unsubscribe. It has the sound an feel of a snooty little
clique of insiders. Maybe they are politer than I am not to complain.
What I'd really like to know, and have posted about twice with no
response, is whether there will be any further usage by Gladstone of the
characters that Don Rosa has so beautifully developed in "Lo$"--and I
specifically am interested in Hortense and Matilda. The Ducks could use a
strong female presence which isn't a tired stereotype. Don has already
done great things with Goldie--how about more female Ducks in the future?
