In light of the stereotyped characterizations of males, females, and gender
relationships in the Gold Key comics of the 60's, neither of these situations
is very surprising. "Red-blooded boys" were not "supposed" to show premature
interest in girls back then; though the Little Rascals had disbanded, the
spirit of their "He Man Woman Haters' Club" still endured. When the ducklings
DID show mutual interest in each other, it was as the result of a "battle of
the sexes" type conflict. Those stories always struck me as tedious.

It would be interesting if someone performed the same "character transplant"
on AM&J that QUACK PACK did on Daisy and gave them some legitimate feistiness.
If the nieces were more like DARKWING DUCK's Gosalyn Mallard, then I can
easily see HD&L eagerly including them in their adventures!

I was gonna go into a long, windy tale about this volume, but Per-Erik's
put paid to that. All I'll add is that the volume is sold out.

Don's progress on these has been slower than generally anticipated, though,
as anyone who knows him is well aware, it's not for lack of superhuman
effort! Still, most of the copies intended for the retailers are now at the
binder, and will ship out to distributors just before mid-November. I
realize this is not what I stated last month, so no cranberry sauce for me
on Thanksgiving!

She was distinctly introduced by Daisy with the words, "Come in, April.
My niece, April, will be in our class the rest of the semester, children!"
As she stood in the doorway of the classroom, immediately all three
nephews share a single thought bubble with a trio of arrow-struck hearts as
the gaze upon April. The rest of the tales involves them desperately
trying to
impress her in an attempt to win her affection, and fantasizing about her
kissing them. This tale also portends to indicate the begining of their
dislike
for girls (as suggested by Daisy to Donald). They all try, and subsequently
fail to impress her with their knowledge of "botany" only to discover she
thought "botany" was the study of "boats" (which explains why she wasn't
interested in their green-thumbs). I assume that the introduction of "April"
was originally meant to be a one-shot.

Just last week an episode of "Quack Pack" featured a similarly aged duck-ette
who took part in a hiking trip with Donald, the boys and their chubby pal,
Gustav. I forget her name off-hand, but all three nephews were desperately
trying to impress her, though by the end of the show she was off arm-in-arm
with Gustav (having become extremely tired of the boys' antics). She was
definitely a "duckbill" though she had a blond ponytail beneath her ballcap.
She obviously knew more about hiking then they did, and while she basically
presented herself as being more mature (by comparison to the boys), she was
also a tad sassy in her own right. Too bad she's unlikely to reappear.

AM&J have been comicbook staples for decades now, appearing in nearly
all Disney titles in the USA (I have seen them appear reagularly as back-up
tales in Mickey Mouse, Junior Woodchucks, Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge,
WDC&S and a myriad of other books, especially in "giants." They have
appeared beside all the usual Disney characters including Mickey, Goofy,
Clarabelle, Ludwig von Drake and Pluto. They are almost ALWAYS at Duck
Family gatherings and events, even when they are not prominently featured.
In comparison to Minnie, they seem to have been given much more latitude
in how they are presented, second only to Daisy, and have been presented in
many more stories inwhich they have headlined (Minnie, in the USA, has
barely had a decent handful of tales). I would even presume to say they
have been given more headlining tales than the Twins (Morty & Ferdie)
have in the USA. If any characters deserve a crack at animation, I submit
that these three should at least be granted a guest-shot if not a recurring
role in any future "Duck" animated series. They would at least serve as
a hook for young girls, as HD&L do for boys. I'm sure some might
even like to see what would happen if they encountered Webby ("Usurp
our role as $crooge's niece, eh? We'll see about that you whiney brat!
Take that! And that! And that! And here's whats left of your silly
Quackypatch doll!" Oh Uncle $crooo-ooooge, we're baaaa-aaack!").

Personally, I like Webby, but I have noticed some don't. I would like to
see an animated series based on the junior Disney characters like HD&L,
AM&J, Newton, Gilbert, Gos & Honker, Max, P.J. and Pistol, Morty &
Ferdie, Millie & Melody, Dickie, Bubba, Doofus, Herbert, Webby,12&3
(Beagle Brats), and others (such as Metropolis, Zico & Zeca, Cousin Sock
and Bertie the Jinx). Even just a Disney Christmas special where they all
gather with their respective adults for fun and adventure.

Info needed:
As I mentioned some digests ago I have been contacted by a public relations
type group who helps the Norwegian Disney publishers put up Something
Reasonably Noticeably Big for next year, in connection with it being 50 years
since the first issue of the Norwegian "Donald Duck & Co" magazine. -- I'm not
sure what the P.R. people have in mind, but there will possibly be a full TV
programme, newspaper stories, and more.

And the point, at the moment, is that these guys need more info than the
Norwegian publishers easily can provide. And they have heard (from me!) that
this mail list is so wonderfully knowledgable and helpful... I've already
helped them with _some_ info, but further questions remain:

**1. What awards (national or international) have been bestowed upon Don Rosa?
In particular, which Eisner Awards, from which years? (In Norway he has been
given the "Sproing" award, I know; there must be a couple of such from other
countries?) [Last resort: ask the modest awardee himself...]

**2. Same question for Carl Barks.

**3. The famous FC 223 1949 story "Lost in the Andes" made headlines in Norway
when it was published here in 1963, because of the translator's choice of
letting the Awfultonians speak "nynorsk", New Norwegian (which is older than
Norwegian, etc., to confuse foreigners). The P.R. group has access to newspaper
archives and so on, and will use this privilege, _but_ does not quite know
where to start... Does anyone have helpful info here? Anyone with actual
newspaper clippings?

**4. I told them about "the ping pong method" of raising a sunken boat,
invented in Barks' tenpager WDC 104 from 1949, and that the idea was exploited
later on by a Danish engineer. They were appopriately excited about this, and
need more facts. Was his name Karl Kroyer? Did the existence of the Disney
magazine destroy Kroyer's possibilities of getting the idea patented? Did this
happen in 1961?

**5. Are there other famous cases (let's say in Scandinavia) where Barks
_stories_ have reached national debate level?

**6. Did Norwegian zillionaire and shipping magnate Fred. Olsen (who owns TIMEX
and hundred other companies and probably also Bill Gates) really read WDC&S #1
in 1940?

**7. I invite fellow Scandinavians to contribute what could presumably be
"Barksian catch phrases"! There's a beautiful little book about _German_
Barks-phrases that "most people would know about" (without necessarily knowing
about the Barksian-Erika-Fuchsian root to the saying or expression). Perhaps
the consistency and quality of German translatoress per excellence Erika Fuchs
has contributed to a higher percentage of such than what could be found in e.g.
Norway, but there ought to be _some_ such phrases in the living languages of
Scandinavia? (I realise this question is difficult also in being a "generation
thing".) [BTW, I heartily recommend the Fuchs phrases book, it is beautifully
done; is it publishing company "313", "Drei Dreizehn"?]

**8. They wanted to know "how expensive is an expensive Barks comic book?", of
course, and with the same question for Rosa [which would be the current price
demanded for a NM/M copy of Uncle Scrooge #219, I suppose]. One might check
the Overstreet guide, of course, but perhaps some of you out there have more
specific and exciting information...

**9. How many Duck fanzines are there and have there been?

**10. Jon Gisle's famous and rightly influential book "Donaldismen" was
published in ...1973? Does it exist in both Swedish and Danish? Any ideas
about sales figures?

**11. Are there general themes or exciting ideas that you somehow wish to
contribute to the P.R. group?

Helpful informants will probably not be given the copy of WDC&S #1 that Fred.
Olsen bought for 10 cents in 1940, but they will be smiled to when met, and
approving nods will be given in their general directions. And they will have
their chance to shine on this mail list.

My guess is that they should start with the guys working on Donald Duck &
Co. because in 1990, when the "Lost in the Andes" was reprinted in the
"P?ske-ekstra", it was written a piece about the media coverage of the story
on the last page of the "P?ske-ekstra". This article also included pictures
of newspaper clippings. So the guys who made this article could remember
where they got those newpaper clippings from.

Like Jens "Onkel Skrue" Stoltenberg and the calling the savings of the
norwegian oil money "pengebingen" ? Or when your in luck, someone calls you
"heldige Anton". Is that what you mean?

What about the political paries: "Kalle Anka-partiet" that got 1535 votes at
the "riksdagsvalget" (national election?) in 1991 in Sweden and the "Dansk
National Donaldistisk Arbejder Parti" (DNDAP) that got 0,9% of the votes at
the local election (i dunno what the english word is) in Denmark a couple of
years ago.

Or that norwegian iceskaters (Steinar Johansen?) donald duckish
skating-suite. "Dagbladet" of "VG" (norwegian papers) wrote something about
that.

Or the norwegian donaldist on "Kvitt eller dobbelt" (norwegian tv-quiz-show)
that charmed the whole country.

Well, yes. I knew this. (honest) And I apologize for not mentioning it
earlier. But they are showing different excerpts on the TV3 version.
They have removed something, and even replaced them with something
competely different e.g. excerpts from "Lady and the Tramp" and "Three
Cabbaleros", which weren't in the original show.

So I would really like to know if the original show still exists somewhere,
and if it is possible to get is somewhere. And please feel free to E-mail
me in privat, as this is slightly off topic in the first place.......
