Hi DCmailians!
I'm Gilles MAURICE, the french fan DonRosa spoke you about a few times.
I didn't know this section of the site, just the characters', the stories' and the artists', but when DonRosa showed my work here, I realised that it was too bad not to become a part of that! I have so many questions that don't find answers in sites or in the few comics I've got... ( Don't worry, I won't annoy you with Disney cartoons!...). You know, it's very difficult to work with french names, or non-english names, because you can do a lot of mistake because of the first translators' mistakes (for instance, I saw in a german family tree that Gladstone and Gus were brothers, only because they've the same name! What a pity!
I'll ask you questions later, here I just want to say HI !
I answer the few questions which have been asked about my work:
a.. I made Don and Della bear in 1920 because Sigvald did in his Who's Who, and it was perfect (he would have done his first film aged 14, met his uncle aged 10, take his nephews aged 22...)
The date 3/13 came from things I've just heard, and the film "Los tres caballeros", the only cartoon DonRosa think good, in which
is showed on Donald's birthday present's sticker that the scene took place on a 3/13. I don't know if it is a friday, because I haven't got a 1920 calendar!... but if somebody knows all the friday 3/13 arond 1920, he is welcome!
It's IMPOSSIBLE for him to bear on 1934, how could he meet his uncle in 1930 ?(Lo$ 11), so why keep this date of june 9th?
OK, the egg(s) could have been layed on 3/13 and hatched on 6/9, around 1920...
a.. About the verb "hatch", yes, it would be more appropriate. I don't like this idea about Ducks hatching from eggs, because, as DonRosa says, the Ducks are human beings, in fact, so I think it's very silly, but on another hand, many cartoons, an episode of QuackPack, this old comic from 1984 and even "The Fountain of Youth" from Barks show or evoque that the Ducks bear in eggs. Althought DonRosa consider that as a joke, in the fountain of youth, when it's said to Donald: "If you stay too long in this water, you'll become an egg!", I maintain this Idea. But if those characters are human beings, so BadWolf and Li'l Pigs too?... When Disney is involved in the cannibalism problem...
a.. Sorry, but I don't know anything about astrology...
Some things have changed in my tree, since I first sent it to DonRosa, and some other stayed:
a.. Since DonRosa told me:
"""I also dislike seeing Donald's sister being named Dumbella -- that's such a
stupid name. These characters don't have dopey names like that. (I assume
you know the English word "dumbbell" and what it means. Donald's twin
sister would not be a dumbbell!) But I see you do try to include all the names a
character has been referred to by even if they are confusing and
self-contradictory. Okay, that would solve this problem. Della would be her
real first name, and her mean brother Donald might have called her
"Dumbella" to annoy her. You have her "nickname" as "Della" which sounds
like a normal name, not a nickname. "Dumbella" sounds like a nickname. You
should change her listing to: Della "Dumbella" Thelma Duck, don't you
agree?""", I changed the "" place.I thought that "Della" was a diminutive for "Dumbella"!...
b.. DonRosa:"""Naturally I don't object to seeing a tree featuring characters other than
those created or used by Barks, which was the sole purpose of my tree. But
you have one brief moment when you recognize the "Ducktales" TV series
characters, which really goes against my grain! It was generally not a bad
show, but I think it should be ignored and forgotten as having anything to
do with the Duck Universe of the comic books! But that's up to you.
But similarly, I think it's a big mistake to pull any Duck characters from
animated Disney cartoons. Disney treats these characters as *actors*
filling whatever role is needed in any film. The unnamed triplet Ducks in
"Donald's Diary" were Huey, Dewey and Louie acting as other characters.
(Generally, I dislike seeing ANY Disney work being made part of the Disney
Duck comic book Universe, something they NEVER contributed to and should
not share any portion of the credit for!)"""
Me:Ok, cartoons are *films* with *actors*, but, to me, if there are an "Aunt Gertie" in "Stuck on Christmas" and some brothers in "Donald's Diary", it's, to me, because they've really existed. They took actors who looked very much like the real Gertie and the others. But I 'll explain that in a "Duck history" that I'm making (not yet finished, I'm adding pictures... :-)) I'll send you when finished.
It's the same thing for Bentina and Webbigail, but I've removed Johnny Genie and Bubba, who are, to me, non-existents characters.
c.. I added Sgrizzo Papero only now, because I wanted to put him before, but I didn't know where, and when I saw in a website , that his English name was Kildare Coot, I know now where to put him! So I added his parents too .(I made Kildare "Sgrizzo" Coot, son of Betty Broodhen and Combout Coot, son of Casey Coot)
See you soon !

Duckburgian hills and mistakes about DonRosa

Hi again!
I'm working on a Duckburg map, and I'd want to ask you :
In the Barks' WDCS 187, how are called the two hills, in english?
About my tree:
This morning, I cleaned up my mailbox.
I checked the e-mail adresses of the two messages signed DonRosa I spoke about in my last message, and guess what?
bruno.maurice at infonie.fr, (instead donrosa at iglou.com)!!
So it was a joke from my cousin, son of an english teacher, because I spoke night and days about Dumbella, Ducktales, Cartoons, Mickey Mouse and DonRosa..., which annoyed him :-(
But finally, I keep the idea, about Della :-)

This is a collection of various sketches and final drawings done for Egmont,
by Bob Foster, Giorgio Cavazzano and an unknown artist. Some of the drawings
were published in the Danish Jumbobg pocket book.
http://www.geocities.com/roland3066/sketches.html
The "Alligator" tale, which is if I'm not mistaken, a special adventure made
for Donald Duck birthday, is an excellent story drawn by Cavazzano for
Egmont.
Once again, many thanks to Bob Foster for providing the scans!

Genetic among Disney Characters...
Message 230 -
2001-02-26 at 23:17:56
Hi!
I'd want to speak about genetic among Disney's "animals".
First, Disney's anthropomorphics characters can be classified into several pedigrees: Duckbills (Ducks, Geeses...)like Donald, Gladstone or Gus, Birdbeaks (other birds), Mousears(Mice, Weasels, Rats...)like Mortimer, Mickey, Dogfaces (Dogs, Wolves) like Goofy or BadWolf, Dognoses (Humans with just a dog nose, but human ears), like Arpine, Teddy Roosevelt, Anthropomised Cows, like Clarabelle, Anthropomised Horses, like Horace, ... and Humans (you know what it is, don't you?).
You mustn't mistake *pedigree* and *race*, which are different things : there can be arabian, or blacks Duckbills, or Dogfaces...
There is not racism between Pedigrees, but there is between races.
As we can see in many stories and cartoons, those different pedigrees can be in love with eachother, and so have children. But what pedigree will he be of ?
I'm going to try to answer, basing myself on ALL, one more time...
I think that the Disney Characters have a part reserved for the pedigree, and that the rest works like for us (eye's color and shape, skin's color, ears...).
This part works with a special way. We never can find a mousear with a beak, for instance, so in this part of the chromosomes, all the genetic is recessive, or all the genetic is dominant.
The pedigrees can also be divided into two groups: those who hatch from eggs, and the mammals.
Not to see a Mouse in a egg, or a Duck being delivered of a Mouse, we can say that between the two groups, the child with always be the same pedigree than his mother. So a child between Minnie and Donald, as Donald is in love with her in a Mouseworks' episode, would be a Mousear.
Then, a Duckbill with a birdbeak can do both Duckbills or Birdbeaks.
The example is in DonRosa's Tree: Casey Coot is an anthropomised gander (a Duckbill) and Gretchen Grebe is an anthropomised chicken (a Birdbeak), and their children are a Duckbill and a Birdbeak
The Humans, Dogfaces, Dognoses, are very akin (From a Barks' to a Rosa's story, it has already happened that a characters Human become a Dognose, or vice versa..., and Miss Goofy seems to be a human, in some cartoons)I think it's the same thing with Pignoses, A.Cows and A.Horses.
So the child between two of those pedigree can be of the first's or the second's pedigree.
Then, if some of the parents is a Mousear, and the other is a mammal, so the child will be a mammal (In "The Brave Little Tailor", Minnie is the daughter of a Dogface, and in "Middle Ages' Mickey", she is the daughter of a Catspaw). So a child between Goofy and Minnie's Aunt Marrissa would be a Mousear. An it's logic! imagine a Goofy in Minnie's belly!
Now let's sum up!
Duckbill+Birdbeak=Duckbill or Birdbeak
Dogface+Human/Dognose/Catspaw/Pignose/...=Dogface or Human/Dognose/Catspaw/Pignose/...
Mammal+Mousear=Mousear
Male Bird+Female Mammal=Mammal
Male Mammal+ Female Bird=Bird

Genetic among Disney Characters...
Message 232 -

Hi!
I'd want to speak about genetic among Disney's "animals".
Thanks for the very comprehensive explanation.
You mustn't mistake *pedigree* and *race*, which are different things : there
can be arabian, or blacks Duckbills, or Dogfaces...
This statement, however, conflicts with my old theory of some sort of
racial separation (not necessarily discrimination, though) in Duckburg. I
used to play with the idea that Mousears and Dogfaces and almost all characters
in Mouse stories (including Black Pete, Clarabelle and Horace) are "black",
while Duckbills, Birdbeaks, Dognoses and Pignoses are "white".
I have some circumstantial evidence to support this theory:
- The "black" and the "white" characters seldom interact, they live in
different neighborhoods.
- The skin color of "black" characters IS black and the skin color of
"white" characters IS either white or some sort of pale flesh color.
- The "black" characters wear white gloves. Wasn't there once a mean sort
of performing art where white artists dressed up as black made parodies of
black people? Didn't these artist typically wear white gloves?
- The business and politics in Duckburg are run by "white" characters.

About pedigrees and races in Calisota/Calidornia
Message 233 -
2001-02-27 at 12:36:59
Hi!
First, the Duckbills are ALLWAYS white-colored, even the african duckbills, as shown in the Lo$, and many Barksian comics.
So don't think that because they're white colored, they're Whites!
Even Clinton Coot is white-colored, but it's not because his two parents are white (don't forget that his mother is probably an Indian Girl...)
For the other pedigrees, you have to see their FACES color, to say their races.
Take for instance Metropolis (see in Rich's pages) : he is really black.
But Goofy isn't, his face is white. Look Aunt Bovina or Madeline Mouse: their skins aren't black, but they are Cow and Mousear!
And Mickey Mouse is from Spanish origine (by his Grandpa Tony Toponi).
There are many dogfaces who are pink colored.
Now, the gloves. The Beagles wore gloves, before DonRosa, are they Black?
Peg is a Catspaw, Roxane is a Dogface: Are they Blacks?
And who told you that Mouseton is IN Duckburg? They're different Cities, all a part of Calisota/Calidornia (Calidornia is how Scarpa calls this). There are Mousetonians in Barks stories because the two cities are near.
Scarpa shows on his Calidornia's map the three cities, from top to bottom Duckburg, Mouseton and Goosetown.
Mouseton is not a neighborhood, like Shacktown is.

One brief note before dashing to work...
(please note the quotation marks in the title)
>>First, the Duckbills are ALLWAYS white-colored, even the african duckbills,
as shown in the Lo$, and many Barksian comics.
Check WDC&S 34 (July 1943, "The Good Deeds", Album 1), pp 7-9.
Haven't the time to think about this and especially the genetics point.
Personnally (but that's just my opinion, and I respect your pondering on the subject),
I don't think we should be trying to sort the characters into black & white (and pink,
which is a purely arbitrary choice of the colorist), even there are some examples,
as above. There are rodents, canines, ducks-- even a turtle ("Missle Fizzle",
WDC&S 244, Jan '61, Album 41)-- and I think that's all the distinction there need be.
More to the point, I think, is how well do they mix, graphically speaking. Some like
to imagine Mickey & Donald live in the same town. They did appear together in
early cartoons and in Floyd Gottfredson's strips, but I think these are the only
occurences where it's OK. Otherwise-- but maybe it's just because we aren't used
to it, and I amy be mistaken-- you never see mousefaces in the duck stories (rats,
but no mice), and you don't see ducks in mouse stories. The others can appear in
both worlds, though. It just looks odd tho have them together. As for the cartoons and
Gottfredson strips, maybe it doesn't because they are not *drawn* the same way,
and are re-modeled to go along well visually-- just imagine a '52 Barks Donald
with a '30s or '50s Mickey, and compare with any cartoon they appear together in.

And what about Ellsworth ? I dunno... Maybe Black... (Here is not the place to talk about Daffy Duck...)
What about Jos? and Yellow-Beak? With your theory, they would be Marsians?...
And Panchito and Aracuan would be from hell?...
About gloves, I don't know exactly what to say...
I've here, in a book about Mickey's parodies, the first panel from a story entitled "Mickey Rodent".
We can see Horace, taken by two policemen and crying, and Mickey, Clarabelle, Br'er Bear, Br'er Fox and many other telling:
-Poor Horace Horszneck
-They're going to imprison him because he went out without his gloves!
-...Everybody knows Walt Dizzy's orders.. He's formal! White gloves all, the while!
-...Even with this warmth!
-...Moreover, it's vershlurslably difficult to find those rubbishes with three fingers on trade!

I need some other translations for my map!
Thanks to Olivier, for the two Hills!
In WDC 469, I'd want to know the park's name and the Senator's name.
In US 23, the reef's name
And in US 63, the Castle's name.
Thanks!

U$ 23: Raider Nick's reef, in the Doomsgurgle Straits.
This is in duckburg or anywhere near, anyway.
It's somewhere along the Canadian coast (p 4, panel 1:
"We came in to resign, sir! Ran most of the way from Canada!").
The ships come down from Sitka (p 5, panel 5), Alaska.
Scrooge and Louie fly to the the lighthouse and arrive the
next day (p 5, panels 7-8).
U$ 63: It's the castle of the ancient mad Duke of Duckburg.
"Duke" probably is a nickname. How could there have
possibly been a Duke in Duckburg? (Unless he's a
foreigner.) Anyway, this was probably just for the
sake of the alliteration and the Gothic setting.
You may also need the prison's name: the "Studious
Hours Prison".
Are you preparing this map for a web site?
Visitors of my own M&D (http://members.nbci.com/mouse_ducks)
must have seen the announcements for a map in the making. It's a map
of the places the ducks and the mouse ahve visited throughout the world--
and beyond! (or beneath...) It's still in the making, though, so it won't be
available for some time-- I'm not even ready to display a work-in-progress
map.
Good luck with yours.

of the places the ducks and the mouse ahve visited throughout the world--
and beyond! (or beneath...) It's still in the making, though, so it won't be
available for some time-- I'm not even ready to display a work-in-progress
map.
Good luck with yours.
Olivier
(No nitpicking intended, but these of course are not "translations",
but the *original* names ; ) )

Carl Barks, at least in WDC 34, has black-colored african duckbills.
See a black & white panel of WDC 34 out of the CBL at
