What do you mean by "correct?" Surely you don't
mean politically correct, as that just doesn't fit.
Calvin & Hobbes is popular because it's
both very funny (not at all a bad thing), and it makes
observations about us (life, family, friendship, interactions
with peers, the world of the imagination, etc.) that are
both poignant and accurate. It creates characters that
we come to love and care about.

I have a large collection of Disney comics from the 60's,
when I was young. Many contain great Barks stories,
but there are a lot of rather juvenile (and totally shallow as
far as reflections on life are concerned) Disney comics that
function as filler in my opinion. Stories that are eminently
forgettable.

But a comic like Calvin & Hobbes, or Bloom County, is
about so much more. Sure, the humor is there, thankfully,
but those comics also contain a lot of insight, political
commentary, etc.

Well, you'll only get those from Rosa, some Barks, Gottredson, or
the better super-hero stories (of which there are a few that
are worthy of consideration). Maybe the situation is better
where you live, however....

Hi all!

Sorry for this OT-mail, but lately I have been bombarded
with American spam in both my mail-adresses. Since there
is a possibillity that these spam-"terrorists" have found
my and other mail-addresses via DCML I see it as my duty
to warn you about it so that DCML's security, if possible,
can be improved. I'll also try to send some of the spams
over to our Danish friend Søren Krarup Olesen so that he
can findt their IP/IPs in order to have them reported to
their mail-hosts.

Please notice that this posting is *not* meant as an
offence against anybody here, and please remember that
spam-"terrorism" is not stopped by any use of, or any
threath of using killfilters aganist anyone in this
group.

*Sigh*

You sent this message in _four_ copies, to dcml? Just to "prove your
point" and spam the list-recipients?

This is not the first time you start a ruckus on DCML about something
totally off-topic. While I hate spam as much as anybody (hell, i'm a
regular reader/lurker of news.admin.net.abuse-email, _AND_ the SPAM-L
list) - I really don't think this is the right mailinglist.

Sure, your email address is _probably_ harvested of the web. And, its
_probably_ harvested right out of the dcml-archives at <URL:
http://stp.ling.uu.se/pipermail/dcml/2002-November/020350.html > , but
you know what? I really find it better to have the archives available
for everyone on the web, indexed by google and other searchengines --
than having to manually have to locate and search through thousands of
lists everytime I wonder about something.

Of course, one could always get the listadmin to munge the
emailaddresses on those webpages, but . .. ehh .. it really won't stop
the spam-problem.

If you want to fight spam, complain to the spammers providers (but
please, LEARN HOW first! And don't complain in your usual whining
way!). Don't kill the abuse-desk, but try to get'em to whack the
spammer.

Hm, as if I didn't get enough spam already! There is no efficient way to
stop spam yourself, since those mails in general are ordinary mails in
every technical way. You might ask your provider to narrow their spam
filter, but...it will never be 100% "secure". Sigvald, there is no
reason to suspect DCML being responsible for the knowledge of your
e-mail address. The mere presence of you on the Internet is enough. For
example, my own e-mail address sko at inducks.org is beginning to
receive spam, but not only that, also e-mail addresses which do not even
*exist* at inducks.org get spam.

Hi all!

Sorry for this OT-mail, but lately I have been bombarded with spam from
Sigvald in my mailbox. Since there is a possibillity that this spam
"terrorist" has found my and other mail-addresses via DCML I see it as my
duty to warn you about it so that DCML's security, if possible, can be
improved. I'll also try to avoid bothering our Danish friend S?ren Krarup
Olesen about this matter because trcking the IP wouldn't affect the amount
of spam mails sent.

Sigvald, I don't even know what you mean by "correct", and I certainly don't
have any idea why you evidently feel such contempt for people who enjoy what
you call "correct" comics -- such as myself.

I am very sorry for your apparent inability to appreciate any comics but
those about Donald Duck. But the denigrating terms you use in describing
those who can appreciate them is getting very tiresome.

It is surprisingly difficult to find the DR 2003 Calendar in the Oslo
bookstores, but at least some have them -- I found my copies at
Avalon. I just wished to report that they are exquisitly done, with
great "cover page" type art at a generous size. Any wall should be
proud to carry this for a year.

It is also surprising to me that it is not even being mentioned on the
Donald Duck magazine home page www.donald.no . But perhaps
it will be mentioned in the weekly magazine, in one or more of
the coming issues. If not, it would indicate (to me) a lack of serious
interest by Egmont in actually selling what they have produced and
paid for, or a lack of decent communication between parties. Strange.

How is this in Sweden and Denmark? I learn that the calendar,
originally conceived of and ordered by the Finnish Duck publishing
house, is selling very well there.

This list doesn't always manage to pay attention to the central
aspect of Disney Comics related life which is that of
_publications_: what is for sale, where, when, and is it good?
This message is just to point out that there are two Barks items
out now, for sale all over Norway, and I assume also Denmark
and Sweden:

* Carl Barks Christmas Stories (or similar title),
hardcover, 200+ pages, price 250 NOK or so (more than
30 Euro or USD). I didn't buy it as I have all the stories already
in other editions. This is a problem with Barks, of course, his
constant use and re-use makes it difficult for the publishers
and the prospective buyers: we have seen it all before.
But I suppose the book is well done. I noticed a couple of
Firestone Giveaway Christmas stories, for example (I particularly
like the one from Firestone 1947). Also, for the umpteenth time,
Christmas on Bear Mountain. It has become the Vivaldi's
Four Seasons of Disney comics (welldeservedly). The market
must soon be saturated, after nearly twenty years of Barks
hardcover book collections, published I think since 1984 just
in time for Christmas shopping. -- The market should be ready
for similar hardcover books filled with Rosa stories. Surely that
is the next logical step, for Egmont Scandinavia.

* Carl Barks Benny Burro & Barney Bear stories (or similar title):
a nice enough album with perhaps eight stories, taken from
Barks' years 1943-1947 with "Our Gang". Again, I didn't
buy it, since I have the stories already. Perhaps someone else
here could give us more details.

I have only seen one ad for it in the Swedish weekly, and that ad was only
sent to the subscribers. I've not seen any kind of marketing whatsoever for
it.

and why i feel it is important to mix Barks with other solid creators (and
not just Barks imitators) in "entry level" publications --
i have no need to buy my 5th reprinting of a Barks story -- but there are
plenty of people who have never (never!) read any Barks! wow, imagine the
fun they are about to get!
