Hi all!

I have a question about Daisy Duck story (Statue in underwear) W OS 995-04
in one-shot comic book "Donald Duck Album" May 1959. In Finnish translation
newly erected statue is one of Cornelius Coot (Julle Ankanpää), founder of
Duckburg. Is it really the case with original? Statue doesn't look like
Cornelius Coot at all and in story there appears a character, old long
bearded duck, who remembers what kind of clothing Coot weared in the days of
founding of Duckburg, because he was there! Huh?

Hey Timo,

I wrote the "Universe Guide" in 1993. Looking back from ten years
later, I can't imagine what was going through my head- except, perhaps,
looking at stereotypically cliched jungle natives, I instinctively referred
to them as cannibals without thinking twice.
As you correctly point out, they're really innocent of cannibal
cannibals they're not. Donald isn't on the menu. Maybe Per can fix this for
me?

Apologetically, David

Hi David and all!

uh, it wasn't me who asked about this, I think it was Gilles.
Thanks for answering, though! :-)

Hi!
I recently (no, not on the April 1st :)) heard a rumour of a picture/painting depicting Scrooge McDuck on his dying bed. I would assume it was "modeled" after the Dickens' Scrooge's death, but as a rumour, everything stands unconfirmed. I would like to know - does this picture exist or is it just an urban legend?
Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on the subject!

Take a look here:
http://stp.ling.uu.se/cgi-bin/starback/dcml/story?W+OS+995-04

This story is drawn by Tony Strobl and seems to be one of many "fictious"
storys made before 1818, in the late 1980s, was established as the year
Cornelius Coot came to Duckburg - a year that fits very well into the actual
history of the actual area of the North American western coast.

Nobody born early enough to remember events that took place in 1818 could
possibly still be alive in 1959. And if one selects to disregard the year
1818 the situation in this Strobl-story becomes even more weird because the
famous Norwegian Donaldist Jon Gisle has once described Cornelius Coots
clothing as typical for the 1700s rather than for the 1800s.

I have a couple questions about two Scientists who appear in Disney comics.

One I recall has appeared a few times with Mickey. He is a friendly
dognose with a beard and a cowboy hat. I think he is most noted for having
genetically engineered dinosaurs which now live on his ranch. Can anyone
tell me the name of this scientist and has he appeared more than the couple
of times I recall?

The second scientist is a bad guy. He is apparently a Duck villain and is
known "Dr. Krantz" in German. Does he have another name in English or
Italian? What is his story (background)?

Thanks,

Rich Bellacera

Is he a recent character (from the last 20 years or so)?
Because he sounds line he may be based on real-life
paleontologist Robert Bakker:

Files section? *insert dramatic silence* I must admit that I am
a complete newbie to these things, and have no idea what you are
talking about. :)

You're combining two characters here.
Professor Wagstaff, a rival of Mickey's pal Professor Dustibones, is
the scientist who first genetically engineered the dinosaurs.
Buck Calhoun is the friendly rancher who now has the dinosaurs at
his ranch, but Buck had nothing to do with their initial breeding.
These characters appeared in several stories by Pat McGreal and
Cesar Ferioli (stories which we Yanks first saw in WDC&S 621-24 and 626-27).
Pat and his wife, Carol, have recently done some new stories with Wagstaff,
too, but they haven't been published yet.

Dr. Kranz (the Italian spelling- I can't access the American comics
at present) is really a Mouse villain: the enemy of Goofy's archaeologist
cousin Arizona Goof. Arizona only ever made one appearance in the USA, in
GOOFY ADVENTURES 12-13.

TIMO and GILLES:
I musta been half asleep when I posted that letter about
non-cannibalistic cannibals yesterday. Not only did I address it to the
wrong guy (you'd posted about something else, Timo!), but I stated:
"As you correctly point out, they're really innocent of cannibal
cannibals they're not."
What the...?! This really should have been
"As you correctly point out, they're really innocent of cannibal
behavior, so cannibals they're not."
I somehow deleted a couple of words and didn't notice before I sent
it off.

That's right! Thanks. Being here in Shanghai with all my comics in
California I'm basically without any resources except the web! Now I
recall that story and Buck indeed was not a scientist, but just a rancher
and friend of Mickey's who took on the homeless dinos after Wagstaff was
defeated. I remember the first time I read the initial story I enjoyed it
so much I had hoped there would be a sequel! And then there was. And now
you say there will be more of Wagstaff and Calhoun in the future? That's
great! I like the idea of "Mickey Mouse meets Jurassic Park" (but in a
nice way;-) Just as I'd love to see the villain Wiley Wildbeest again
someday.

Hmmmm. Interesting, since Germany's Ehapa website lists him among the
"Duck" characters rather than the "Mickey" ones where Arizona Goof is
listed.
No worries, but at least now I know where he comes from. I know I have
some Arizona Goof comics at home so maybe he appears in one of them and
I'll figure out his other name then.

Thanks,

Rich

Buck is a fairly recent addition to the Disney cast of recurring characters
(within the last 20 years). Interesting comparison you have there Shad. I
read most of that page you linked and I can't help but wonder, too, if
Bakker was in the forefront of the minds of Pat McGreal and Cesar Ferioli
when they created "Buck Calhoun." Buck is a bit "heavier" than Bakker, but
in some ways I'd say he could be a caricature of him. I personally found
Buck to be a very charismatic character and would love to see more of him
in stories with Mickey and the gang. His odd contrast of the cowboy
frontier and Jurassic Park is a pleasant feature in a Disney comic, and
Disney could really use this aspect as a catch for kids with fascination
for dinosaurs.

Thanks for that information!

Maybe you are thinking of Don Rosas "Hey, Daisy, whatever happened to uncle
Scrooge?"
drawing, made for a German Donaldist magazine?
This drawing however doesn't show Scrooge since he's alreday six feet under.

I don't know if it's up on the web somewhere.

It is, on http://duckman.pettho.com/history/hd19xx_c.gif .

BTW, on April 10th the new Dutch 'Avonturen van Donald Duck'-album will be
available, with Mau Heymans stories (and not Ben Verhagen stories like Harry
Fluks wrote in November '02).
And Gyro's First Invention is (finally) published here in Holland (you can
see a cover scan on
http://members.lycos.nl/sanderdonaldduck/index.php?subaction=showcomments&id=1049559054
). And they indeed used the 2-part version, in 1 magazine (like usual). But
why did they colour Little Helper orange?! (you can see the scan of the plot
recap page on http://members.lycos.nl/sanderdonaldduck/pagina13.jpg)
