Well, I would be glad to scan the Barks homage pages from the San Diego
Comicon Souvenir book and post them on my web site, but I can't right now.
My web site has been down for several weeks, and it looks like it's going to
be awhile longer before I am able to straighten out the problems with
Network Solutons and Earthlink. When my web page is back up, I'll post the
homage pages there and provide a hyperlink to the mailing list to view them.

Can someone with a good mark in English please tell me the difference on the
two sentences "Tralla La turns out to be Xanadu" and "Xanadu turns out to be
Tralla La"?

After all, the main subject of the sentence is "Tralla La and Xanadu turns
out to be the same place". So the two sentences does actually MEAN the same
thing. Am I wrong? If not, why are we arguing about such a silly thing?
(well, we have argued about sillier things before anyway...)

The enjoyment that this list usually brings me is
going to be muted for a while.

While the worst thing happening to me personally was
being evacuated from a meeting at the US Department of
State yesterday, the sheer magnitude is overwhelming.

By the way, the reports of bombs elsewhere were just
that (and hopefully will remain that way). I ride
Metro here in DC every week day to get to work. The
stations at the Pentagon (opposite side of the
building from the crash) and National Airport were
closed. Also the station at Union Station was closed
for a while yesterday.

Interstate 395, the highway which passes by the
Pentagon on its way to the Beltway (the ring road
around DC and the inner suburbs) was closed for a
while, along with some other roads and bridges.

My wife's former employer works occasionally at the
Pentagon; we don't know about where she was yesterday.
A co-worker of mine owned a shop with his wife just
across from the World Trade Center. Many of their
former clients were on the upper floors of both
towers. They have been able to contact only one of
them so far.

This is not the way to get the American public on your
side, which they just never seem to realize is the
real power of democracy. (Enough people make noise,
politicians eventually have to listen.) I fear, like
the Japanese military did with Pearl Harbor, this was
a big miscalculation on the part of those who did it.
I hope that things like this do not become a regular
part of any of our lives.

I will climb off my political soap box now and allow
this list to get back to its intended subject. If
anyone wishes to ask me anything about the local stuff
here (that was most of it described above), please
email me privately.

You can find many MICKY-MAUS-Comics on ebay.de (I have seen many
auctions with comics from 1994, when this story was published in MICKY
MAUS, there), most of the sellers send them through whole Europe (if the
buyer pays the postage).
If you still don't find them just mail me - I will surely find them in
our local comic shop for you.

Hi, all. Thanks for your concerns.
In this day and age of CNN and Fox News, where everything is played out
before our eyes as it happens, it's hard to believe that you all haven't seen
everything that I've seen on television. What you may not have heard are some
of the little stories that represent the finest traits of civilized human
beings.
One of my favorites is about some people on board the plane that crashed
in rural Pennsylvania. Apparently they knew that the hijackers on board their
airplane had targeted the White House and/or the Capitol Building. One of the
last things they said to their loved ones via cell phone was something to the
effect that they knew what the terrorists were going to do and that "three of
us are going to do something about it." It looks like they then fought with
the terrorists and then found a way to drive the plane into the ground
outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before it reached its intended target.
A friend of mine lives in Manhattan, about 15 city blocks from the site
of the twin towers. His son had just gotten married and he and his new wife
were on their honeymoon. They were going to have breakfast at the top of the
twin towers Tuesday morning. They'd already purchased their tickets to the
top days earlier. Tuesday morning the newlyweds overslept and didn't go to
the twin towers.
Another friend of mine has a sister who actually did have breakfast there
on Monday. These are things that are surprisingly close to me, to actually
know people who are immediately related to this incredible event.
Then there's the women who was evacuating one of the towers with her
co-workers. On her way down, at about the 27th floor, she met a lot of
firemen and rescue workers on their way up to help those trapped on the
floors above. The elevators were not working, of course, so getting up those
27 floors was tough. It took the woman another 15 minutes to get all the way
down to street level and to escape the area. As she was doing so, the
building collapsed, all 110 floors of the tower pancaking down, one floor on
top of the other until it became a pile of rubble 50 feet high (about 5
floors high.) Somewhere, sandwiched between the layers of that pancaked
building are about 200 of New Yorks finest firemen and rescue workers who
died in their efforts to help others.
One of the most horrific images (as if one was worse than another) was of
the dozen of people on the floors just above the point of impact. They were
hanging out the windows 1,300 feet (about 410 + meters) above the streets,
waving shirts, screaming for help, desperately trying to avoid being burned
to death by the flames behind them, finally choosing, CHOOSING, to fall to
their deaths, arms and legs flailing and kicking, hoping to fly or to find
footing and to escape and, enevitably crashing to the pavement. In one case,
landing on a fireman and killing him on impact.
Unless you've been to New York, stood at the foot of the World Trade
Center Towers and looked up, or have actually been to the top of the twin
towers, it's understandably difficult to get any sense of the size and scale
of these buildings. What I saw, live as it happened, looked like a promo for
some action-adventure movie with great special effects. It's still impossible
to believe it was real. Who could ever imagine the day would come when any of
us would witness such a thing.
Video tape is now coming into the TV stations that was shot by visitors
and tourists whose cameras just happened to be rolling when a jet plane flew
into the scene, over their heads and into the first tower. As word spread of
the event, more cameras were trained on the burning first tower, news crews
had their cameras rolling, when the second plane came in. What at first
seemed to be a horrible accident quickly became an obvious act of terrorism
beyond comprehension.
I heard that a Canadian newswoman was interviewing some pro-Bin Laden
supporters who were all dancing and jumping for joy at the success of the
mission. When she asked if they were aware that as many as 50,000 people may
have died in this catastrophe, they all became suddenly silent. They either
never realized so many human beings would be affected by this, or they
suddenly realized they were screwed.
Finally, I just received this email from my brother, and I find it to be
very interesting. See what you think. Talk to you all later.

I have gone through my archives to see if I could find the text of the message that I sent to DCML on August 25th, 2000. How it got lost I don't know. This was sent at about 3AM as soon as I arrived home after paying my last respects to Mr. Barks. Perhaps you can get the gist of my letter from Don Ault who was one of the first persons to get my message. A rather trivial "argument", indeed, but which will help us think of
something lighter for a few seconds.

As regards the result and overall meaning, both sentences
mean the same, indeed: T=X or X=T .
The argument (too strong a word, but never mind) was
concerned with the logical way to put it.

"A turns out to be B" here implies that you know B
(so you can identify it later);
then you find that A is the same as B.
ex: (B) you know that Donald has three nephews
(A) you know HDL
you find out that HDL *are* Donald's nephews

The thing is that I wrote "T turns out to be X"
by considering that they discovered that T (which they knew)
was in fact X (which they have known for a longer time),
which I explained in my reply to Kriton.

But Kriton was right, as I admitted in my second post.
I hadn't thought of the way they discover it in the story
in my first answer.
It's not like they're staying in T and suddenly realize or find out
that T is in fact X (which my phrasing meant):
in the story, they are looking for X, and when they get there,
"X turns out to be T" (Kriton's correction).
