Anyone here read Scott McCloud's"Reinventing Comics" or
"Understanding Comics"? Interesting stuff. He thinks the Internet will
be the salvation of the industry.
I always felt the Barks universe was "real", and recall the
adventures stimulating my interest in mythology, history, archaelogy,
physics, etc. I recall having difficulty with the "shrinking /expanding
Santa" in CP #1, although it was a novel approach to solving the
"sliding down the chimney" problem. I liked it that Barks remained
largely nonsectarian and didn't feel the need to appeal to religion or
fantasy to make his stories work
I wonder if the decision by Disney/Dell to soft sell religion was
partly political or strictly business. I recall being shocked by Uncle
Walt's decision to endorse a political candidate (Actor George Murphy)
for Senator from California in 1964.
I note the plug for Snow White("...hag who looks somewhat like witch
who poisoned Snow White.") in Golden Christmas Tree. Could it be Disney
was re-releasing "Snow White" around that time?

"I came down the chimney, but don't think I'm Santa Claus!"

On 8-3-00 I interviewed Mr. Don Rosa on my Local
Access TV Show. The program is 105min. The interview
is nearly 90min. Included is a 6min sequence of his
Duck figure collection matched to Indiana Jones
music(Sorry Mr. Rosa, I didn't use Bernard Herman),
10min synopsis showing comic stories, and 5min of
penciled pages on LO$ 10b with Teddy Roosevelt. Great
stuff, which I want to share with fans...for free
basically. All I'm asking is for people to send me a
vhs tape and enough stamps to cover the $2.09 s/h
charge. If you're too busy to get the tape and stamps
send me $5.00. So please put the word out. Thanks.

I will also have this interview transcribed to print
for any webpage, magazine, or fanzine wanting to use
it. Please contact me and let me know. And thanks
again Mr. Don Rosa! Oh, by the way, you get a free
copy, but I'm afraid it's in Yiddish...just kidding!

Sigh... about Digest #200 and #202:

What happened:
I write something, then I try to clarify something and Don Rosa answers.

What the internet-computers make out of it:
I write something, Don Rosa answers and *then* the clarification
comes in. Which will mean a lot of confusion, of course.

So, dear people somewhere in the 2030s, when you get this message in,
notice that both emails were written the very same day:

> Subject: The Golden Christmas Tree, and the way how Carl Barks did
> his work
> Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 16:19:57 +0200

> Subject: Correction to previous posting!!
> Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 20:52:15 +0200

Best wishes to all,

--- Daniel (having little time now)

That's right. Daniel, please relax.

Dear
Sirs & Madams,

I'm very enthusiastic concerning the responses I've
received for my Local Access TV Show interview with
Mr. Don Rosa, including fans, webpages, The New Comic
Reader, and the publisher of Alter Ego. I wish
enthusiasm in America was as equal.

A little bird, or maybe a little duck, helped me
realize the wisdom in first letting Mr. Rosa view the
finished product. After his acceptance, "and only
after 'his' acceptance," will I then proceed.

As for making a mpeg, avi, or Real Video version,
Thomas Lauritsen, www.duckburg.dk, has informed me his
idea of the interview being uploaded to a webpage
probably wouldn't work. I also think it would look
bad.

I think the only obstacle now for those in other
countries is stamps; wherefore, after I know ones
address I can tell you just how much it would cost me
to send you a tape. The latter also also depends on if
you send me a tape or if I buy it. Anyway, the
positive side to all this is I think modern vcrs in
other countries will now play american vhs tapes and
vice-versa. This is definitely a learning experience.

Thanks again everybody for corresponding. I'll be
sending a copy off to Mr. Rosa any day now. God bless.

DON ROSA to me, 5 AUGUST 2000:

>> So, *please* try to be a bit careful when you write about other
>> persons than yourself.

> As usual, I'm not remotely close to understanding what irks you.
> Obviously anyone would have the sense to know that I had no intention
> of summing up Barks' entire working methodology or 60-70 year career
> in two sentences in one paragraph.

Not in one paragraph, but the subject about what Barks did, didn't
and shouldn't have done, returns in many of your messages. It's just
a matter of opinion, of course, but you being a well-known artist
(who even has based his career on Barks) makes it very difficult
for a fan like me to tell you *my* opinion here.

And the times when I did an attempt, I get *private* messages from
people telling me that they agree with me and that it's about time
that someone does the job.

(I'd rather polish coins for 30 cents an hour then.)

I surely don't want to embarrass them, but I've finally decided to
tell you about it because I think that you deserve to know it.
Summarizing, they simply don't dare or want to discuss with you
because of your position in Duckworld, and your strong wording in
your messages makes it even more unattractive.

Your phrase "Obviously anyone would have the sense to know" in the
above quote is just only an example of that.

Do you think that this is what I (or anyone else) want to get as
an answer on a discussion list about a *hobby*? That is what irks
me for a long time (you and I are on this list for many years)
and that is what I meant with asking you to be more careful.

Maybe my English isn't good enough to understand it, but in this
case you seem to mean that I'm SENSELESS in one way or the other.
Why? Because I apparently misunderstood a "brief message" from you?

But anyhow, if I did misunderstand you in this or any other message,
you have my apologies for that.

> I'm not writing a doctorate thesis here, none of us are,

*You* are not writing a doctorate thesis here. Please, let the
others speak for themselves, because that is what this discussion
list is for.

> we are exchanging brief messages.

Who is "we"? I've seen many very extensive long messages here.

> So, *please* relax.

Agreed. And I hope I can count on you that you will be relaxed,
too, in your future messages. I hope we both can agree that
contributing to this list should be fun, without the feeling of
being in some kind of battle.

And in case that this message or any other gives you (or anyone else)
the impression that I feel some kind of hatred towards you, you'll
have to believe me on my word that this is not the case. Even though
I've disagreed with you or your work for many times, I feel much
respect for you as an artist who has given me so many times of enjoyment.

Also, if I ever managed to insult you in any way, you have my sincere
apologies for that. You'll have to believe that I'm not the sour,
cynical person as you may think I am. Saying this, I just can't help
thinking of a Barks quote: "ASK THE NEIGHBORS!" :-)

Best wishes, again heartfully meant,

--- Daniel
"Hate is suffering."

PS. I curse my English, which is my second language, because it's
VERY difficult for me to express myself in a language which isn't
my own. If you could only see the wornout dictionary lying next to
me... In fact, I've already worn out one during the years that I'm
here on this list. It literally fell apart one day. And *still*
I can only write 'theory-English': phrases and lines spliced
together as a very, very inferior version of the much better Dutch
wording I have in mind.

According to Michael Barrier, the "Letter to Santa" is both written
and drawn by Barks. (According to the vouchers.) Maybe Barks wrote and
drew the story because he knew that it was what editors wanted him to
write? Or maybe he was only given a theme to work out himself?
A direction like: "We want a story with Santa Claus in it"?

Is the shrunk Santa Claus part of his appearance in general, or is
it something that only appears in the "Letter to Santa" story? It's
the only thing I've wondered about when reading the story.

There was something else that got my attention in that scene.
(Hint: Be a nitpicker and look at Donald's feet...)

Best wishes,

--- Daniel

PS. Do you *really* mean that Santa Claus doesn't exist???

Yes, it's that story. (WDC 88)

I don't know what you mean. Please explain.

Maybe in the hole-in-one golf story of WDC 96?

I think that will be still the problem..

DANIEL + THIERRY + DON:

> PS. Do you *really* mean that Santa Claus doesn't exist???

:-) Yes, it's really amasing. Of course Santa Claus exists! *And*, he
not only exists, but he is so popular that people are payed to dress
like him and give candies to children at supermarkets and ring with
bells in the winter season. His residence is either Finland (I have a
nice postcard showing his home) or The North Pole or Greenland or... of
course he exists, perhaps he's not living next door doing the dishes
for his wife or something but he is utterly placed in our minds, and he
pops out as soon as one starts to use imagination and a bit of fantasy
in the broad sense.

In Denmark the postal services are told to deliver any card or letter
to "Julemanden" (=The Christmas Man/Santa) to a specific address. I
don't know exactly what that address is, and I'm not sure I want to
know. Does this mean that we should be afraid of plain facts, no, on the
contrary, most of us love to compare and investigate physical
existences. Perhaps something like 50% of our brain capacities are
occupied with that every single day. But what about the remaining 50%
then?

Well, it was my hope that those 50% would go to imagination, dreaming
and fantasy, something one cannot put on a plain weight and expect to
get a sensible readout.

It is still a mystery to my, how anyone can claim (or put as an opinion
between sentences) that Donald, Scrooge and the rest of Barks' universe
can be so basically superior (i.e. humans in ducks' clothes) while the
rest is pure fantasy fabricated in poor minds who haven't yet spotted
the truth.

In the light of this, I kindly ask Don Rosa to relax :-)

If we were dealing with the look of our neighbour, discussing her hair
colour or likewise it would be easy. However, in this universe (i.e.
the one being under debate on this e-mail list) things are not that
black or white. The wolfs and the mice and the ducks etc. have equally
rights to exist.

To suggest otherwise, and to do so in the name of Carl Barks or
others would be unfair. Imposing other people ones mind using
well-estimated references is...well, be let's be open minded, this also
opens for good debates, without noses being bit of...

Søren

(...hey...and let's all relax for a moment :-)
