Yes, so did I! And for once I can feel sure that what I'm reading isn't
some kind of misinformation, concerning names and such things.
No, I think it's quite alright with that extra info. It's Rosa style. And
at most there is only one Rosa story in the weekly, so if you want stories
with lesser info, the rest of the magazine is full of them. That's a good
mix I think.
Besides, to read is to learn, not only to enjoy, and when you get to
learn while enjoying, it couldn't be better!

Hi, Don!

You're right!

> the Italians apparently stumbled on that
> ancient & obscure use of Grandma Duck's name in the old WDC&S just as I
> did, and had already been using the name...

Yes. It depends from the reprint of that old Riley Thom(p)son's story, from
WDC&S # 121 (Oct. 1950 - Incidentally, Elviry was born in October, like the
story plans) into a book for collectors which come out in the early 90'es. I
took that old panel and put in into a book ("Walt Disney presenta Paperina e
le altre"), where an full chapter was devoted to Grandma and I esplained all
her story.

Later, that panel was reprinted into other newsstands' books and the name of
Elviry become "common" among the italian story men.
As we just wrote previously, in this list, in another old story (by Carl
Fallberg and Frank Mc Savage: "Grandma Duck in Hollywood"), Grandma's name
was Abigail... But since it was referred to the old Grandma's carreer on
stage... it could even be and art nickname.

Oh, thank you, Don! :-)

We all know here, and the subject has been discussed more than once, that
there are instances where $crooge refers to his money speaking of "three
cubic acres" (or maybe also sometimes a different number of cubic acres?).

I'd like to have references for this. Please help!

HINTS:
One reference is W OS 456-02, the famous "Back to Klondike" (page 2, last
panel). But Fossati's index of Barks stories says that a couple of years
earlier, when the money bin hadn't even been built (Don forgive this...),
in the story W WDC 126-02 the amount of $crooge's money was already
measured in cubic acres. There is no reference in the Italian translation,
so I'd like someone who owns the story to check for me (maybe Fossati was
wrong).

Any other reference to cubic acres IN BARKS' STORIES will be appreciated
too! Thanks!

Fossati was right: in panel 2 of the third page of W WDC 126-02, Scrooge
says "But if they knew I have three cubic acres of money in there, they'd go
loony!"

Maybe some stories are produced for the different age groups? Perhaps all
readers do not want to update their Encylopedia Britannica series by the
facts found from Disney comics?

If looking at those "high quality Dutch stories" I think some of them are
aimed especially for the more grown up readers. Occasionally there is
so exaggerated violence that it could be too upsetting for the younger
readers. What you think about these?:

http://www.geocities.com/gearlost/tmp/h82035.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/gearlost/tmp/h93066.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/gearlost/tmp/h78dd04a.jpg

- -
And what are you meaning by "the very high quality standards" ?

I guess in this case "quality" should mean the artwork and the story
together.
Even Barks didn't succeeded both every time. Sometimes a great story is
destroyed by a poor artwork - and on the contrary. But in most cases a
fairly good story is having a fairly good artwork. Maybe it isn't changing
our views of the life or the universum but it's "just" a Disney comic story.

And sometimes even with those high quality comic producers the level of
the quality have been collapsed directly to the land beyond the ground.

Italian Giuseppe Perego draw many stories still in the 1970's. We know
his quality. The styles of artists such as Franco Lostaffa, Guido Scala or
Sergio Asteriti aren't fascinating everyone. In the 80's cheap studios like
Bargada and Comicup started to produce lots Italian stories. How about the
quality there?

Same goes with Dutch stories too. I placed some other scanned samples here:

http://www.geocities.com/gearlost/011.htm

In some cases I can't tell these high-quality Dutch panels from the S coded
junk stories drawn by Jaime Diaz Studios in the 80's. Often the storyline is
in the woods and the artist has lost his interest for the work totally.

Besides some of those Dutch artists you listed have not drawn Disney
stories for years or decades (Reiche, Coenen, de Jonge) - or their
production have been really minimal during the 90's (Verhagen, Gulbransson)
"Spanish Studios" are drawing a quite high number of Dutch stories nowadays
apparently by those very high Dutch quality standards?

Bah. I just want to point out that no matter how high we think the quality
standards are/were with some Disney comic producers. Almost every story
looks very poor if compared to Carl Barks's work.
If in the 80's some U.S. editors would have been more concerned about the
quality Don Rosa's first story would have never been published.

BTW - Please, if you write namelists of artists, writers, ... you dislike -
make a spell check in case of typing errors. Looks much less ilk then!

The only thing that really bothers me is when someone claims that they are closer to the "true fact", the so-called "original" and stick to that, not for sake of making good Disney comics but for the sake of
being original only. I don't know who invented the wheel, but if those who did suddenly claimed that this was the best wheel ever made, and that everybody in ze world should follow that example, then...well, the American automobile industry would certainly look different then...

This touches on something I've been meaning to ask for some time now. Given all of the international inconsistencies not to mention the differences in views among various creators, how would you as a Disney comics fan or creator feel if the Walt Disney Company, in an attempt to create a more cohesive and "logical" universe (or as logical as a universe can be when it's peopled with talking ducks, dogs, geese, etc.), came up with guidelines that standardized some (or all!) of the very things that have been discussed and required the licensees to follow them? What if they officially established Duckburg's location? What if they defined the color, nature and origin of the money in Scrooge's bin? What if they established an official historical chronology? What if this was all based on the works of Carl Barks and, by extension, Don Rosa? What if they began an extensive effort to retell all previously published stories, revising them so that they adhere to this new Disney Comics Bible? Do you think these "restrictions" would limit the creators' abilities to tell good stories? Do you think this would result in a backlash from some fans who like things as they are in their respective countries? Do you think the average Disney comics reader would notice any difference and, if they did, would they care? I realize this is a pretty broad question, but what are your opinions? I'm really curious about this.

I totally agree with Simo's latest mail.
I don't think that Italian comics really are more
violent than Dutch stories or even Barks'. The real
violence is when you give bad stories for children to
read, such as 95% of Jaime Diaz, or many 90s comicup
stories, Bargada etc.

By the way, I have received a mail from a list member
with a few links you may want to look at:

FOLLOW THE SIMPLE INSTRUCTION BELOW AND YOUR FINANCIAL
DREAMS WILL COME TRUE, GUARANTEED!

INSTRUCTIONS:

++++++ Order all 5 reports shown on the list below

For each report, send $5 CASH, THE NAME & NUMBER OF
THE REPORT YOU
ARE ORDERING and YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS to the person
whose name appears
ON THAT LIST next to the report.

MAKE SURE YOUR RETURN ADDRESS IS
ON YOUR ENVELOPE TOP LEFT CORNER in case of any mail
problems.

++++++ When you place your order, make sure you order
each of the 5 reports.
You will need all 5 reports so that you can save them
on your computer and resell them.
YOUR TOTAL COST $5 X 5 = $25.00.

++++++ Within a few days you will receive, via e-mail,
each of the 5 reports
from these 5 different individuals. Save them on your
computer so they will be
accessible for you to send to the 1,000's of people
who will order them from you.
Also make a floppy of these reports and keep it on
your desk in case something
happens to your computer.

++++++ IMPORTANT - DO NOT alter the names of the
people who are listed next
to each report, or their sequence on the list, in any
way other than what is instructed
below in step '' 1 through 6 '' or you will loose out
on majority of your profits. Once
you understand the way this works, you will also see
how it does not work if you
change it. Remember, this method has been tested, and
if you alter, it will NOT
work !!! People have tried to put their
friends/relatives names on all five thinking
they could get all the money. But it does not work
this way. Believe us, when
people have tried to be greedy and then nothing
happened. So Do Not try to change
anything other than what is instructed. Because if you
do, it will not work for you.
Remember, honesty reaps the reward!!!

1.... After you have ordered all 5 reports, take this
advertisement and REMOVE the name & address of the
person in REPORT
# 5. This person has made it through the cycle and is
no doubt counting their fortune.

2.... Move the name & address in REPORT #4 down TO
REPORT # 5.

3.... Move the name & address in REPORT #3 down TO
REPORT # 4.

4.... Move the name & address in REPORT #2 down TO
REPORT # 3.

5.... Move the name & address in REPORT #1 down TO
REPORT # 2

6.... Insert YOUR name & address in the REPORT # 1
Position.

PLEASE MAKE SURE you copy every name & address
ACCURATELY!
================================================

++++++ Take this entire letter, with the modified list
of names, and save it on
your computer. DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES. Save
this on a
disk as well just in case if you loose any data. To
assist you with marketing
your business on the internet, the 5 reports you
purchase will provide you
with invaluable marketing information which includes
how to send bulk
e-mails legally, where to find thousands of free
classified ads and much more.

There are 2 Primary methods to get this venture going:

METHOD # 1: BY SENDING BULK E-MAIL LEGALLY
=================================================

Let's say that you decide to start small, just to see
how it goes, and we
will assume you and those involved send out only 5,000
e-mails
each. Let's also assume that the mailing receive only
a 0.2% response
(the response could be much better but lets just say
it is only 0.2%.
Also many people will send out hundreds of thousands
e-mails instead
of only 5,000 each).

Continuing with this example, you send out only 5,000
e-mails. With a
0.2% response, that is only 10 orders for report #1.
Those 10 people
responded by sending out 5,000 e-mail each for a total
of 50,000.
Out of those 50,000 e-mails only 0.2% responded with
orders.
That's = 100 people responded and ordered Report #2.
Those 100 people
mail out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 500,000
e-mails. The 0.2%
response to that is 1000 orders for Report #3. Those
1000 people send out
5,000 e-mails each for a total of 5 million e-mails
sent out. The 0.2%
response to that is 10,000 orders for Report #4. Those
10,000 people
send out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 50,000,000
(50 million) e-mails.
The 0.2% response to that is 100,000 orders for Report
#5.

THAT'S 100,000 ORDERS TIMES $5 EACH=$500,000.00 (half
million).

Your total income in this example is:

1..... $50 + 2..... $500 + 3..... $5,000 + 4 ....
$50,000 +5..... $500,000 ........
Grand Total=$555,550.00

NUMBERS DO NOT LIE. GET A PENCIL & PAPER AND FIGURE
OUT
THE WORST POSSIBLE RESPONSES AND NO MATTER HOW YOU
CALCULATE IT, YOU WILL STILL MAKE A LOT OF MONEY !
=================================================

REMEMBER FRIEND, THIS IS ASSUMING ONLY 10 PEOPLE
ORDERING OUT OF 5,000 YOU MAILED TO. Dare to think for
a moment
what would happen if everyone or half or even one 4th
of those people
mailed 100,000 e-mails each or more? There are over
150 million people on
the Internet worldwide and counting. Believe me, many
people will do just
that, and more!

METHOD # 2 : BY PLACING FREE ADS ON THE INTERNET
=================================================

Advertising on the net is very very inexpensive and
there are hundreds of FREE
places to advertise. Placing a lot of free ads on the
Internet will easily get a larger
response. We strongly suggest you start with Method #
1 and do METHOD # 2
as you go along. For every $5 you receive, all you
must do is e-mail them the
report they ordered. That's it. Always provide same
day service on all orders.
This will guarantee that the e-mail they send out,
with your name and address
on it, will be prompt because they can not advertise
until they receive the report.

=========== AVAILABLE REPORTS ====================

ORDER EACH REPORT BY ITS NUMBER & NAME ONLY.
Notes: Always send $5 cash (U.S. CURRENCY) for each
Report. Checks
NOT accepted. Make sure the cash is concealed by
wrapping it in at least 2
Sheets of paper. On one of those sheets of paper,
write the NUMBER & the
NAME of the report you are ordering, YOUR E-MAIL
ADDRESS and your
name and postal address.

$$$$$$$$$ YOUR SUCCESS GUIDELINES $$$$$$$$$$$

Follow these guidelines to guarantee your success:
++++++ If you do not receive at least 10 orders for
Report #1 within
2 weeks, continue sending e-mails until you do.
++++++ After you have received 10 orders, 2 to 3 weeks
after that
you should receive 100 orders or more for REPORT # 2.
If you
did not, continue advertising or sending e-mails until
you do.
++++++ Once you have received 100 or more orders for
Report # 2, YOU
CAN RELAX, because the system is already working for
you, and the
cash will continue to roll in ! THIS IS IMPORTANT TO
REMEMBER:
Every time your name is moved down on the list, you
are placed in
front of a different report. You can KEEP TRACK of
your PROGRESS by
watching which report people are ordering from you.
IF YOU WANT TO GENERATE MORE INCOME SEND ANOTHER
BATCH OF E-MAILS AND START THE WHOLE PROCESS AGAIN.

UP TO YOU NOW!

============ MORE TESTIMONIALS ================
"My name is Mitchell. My wife, Jody and I live in
Chicago. I am an
accountant with a major U.S. Corporation and I make
pretty good money.
When I received this program I grumbled to Jody about
receiving "junk mail." I made fun of the whole thing,
spouting my
knowledge of the population and percentages involved.
I "knew" it
wouldn't work. Jody totally ignored my supposed
intelligence
and few days later she jumped in with both feet. I
made merciless
fun of her, and was ready to lay the old "I told you
so" on her
when the thing didn't work. Well, the laugh was on me!
Within 3 weeks
she had received 50 responses. Within the next 45 days
she
had received total $ 147,200.00 ........... all cash!
I was shocked.
I have joined Jody in her ''hobby."

Mitchell Wolf M.D., Chicago, Illinois
=================================================

"Not being the gambling type, it took me several weeks
to make up
my mind to participate in this plan. But conservative
that I am, I
decided that the initial investment was so little that
there was just
no way that I wouldn't get enough orders to at least
get my money
back. I was surprised when I found my medium size
post office box
crammed with orders. I made $319,210.00 in
the first 12 weeks. The nice thing about this deal is
that it does
not matter where people live. There simply isn't a
better investment
with a faster return and so big."

Dan Sondstrom, Alberta, Canada
=================================================

"I had received this program before. I deleted it, but
later I wondered
if I should have given it a try. Of course, I had no
idea who to contact
to get another copy, so I had to wait until I was
e-mailed again by
someone else.........11 months passed then it luckily
came again......
I did not delete this one! I made more than $490,000
on my first try
and all the money came within 22 weeks."

Susan De Suza, New York, N.Y.
================================================

"It really is a great opportunity to make relatively
easy money with
little cost to you. I followed the simple instructions
carefully and
within 10 days the money started to come in. My first
month I made
$20,560.00 and by the end of third month my total cash
count was $362,840.00.

> Greek "is Greek" to me, that's why you'll probably found typos (I guess
> that's what you're referring to, what else could it be?)

The problem is that the contents of that page are not Greek to a Greek,
and they more or less need to be re-done from scratch by a Greek speaker.
As Harry said:

> The "latin" versions (like "Ntonalnt") of the titles make no sense at all,
> and can better be removed. The Greek transliterate by sound, in stead of
> character by character.

(See below.)

> And for some series, the Greek version is just nonsense ("Special" and
> such).

My favorite was the translation of the "x" in "Carl Barks 10x10" to a
ksi! In a "correct" translation, the "x" would not even be converted to
a chi (not a ksi!), as, in most fonts, lower case chi does not resemble
a multiplication sign as much as a lower case roman x does.

STEFAN:

I'm transcribing your table into something that does not require
configuring one's mail reader to use Greek encoding:

> a = alpha
> b = beta
> g = gamma
> d = delta
> e = epsilon
> z = zeta
> h = eta
> q = theta
> i = iota
> k = kappa
> l = lambda
> m = mu
> n = nu
> x = ksi
> o = omicron
> p = pi
> r = rho
> s = sigma (both varieties)
> t = tau
> y = upsilon
> f = phi
> c = chi
> ps = psi
> w = omega

As Harry suggested, this approach does not take into account that
transcription is done, at least in part, phonetically. There
is even a standard for doing this (ELOT 743 / ISO 843-2),
with a much lengthier table and several footnotes (see, e.g.,
http://www.italnet.nd.edu/AMBROS/text/Greek_transliteration.html), though
most Greeks improvise according to one of several arbitrary schemes when
forced to write Greek using the Roman alphabet, so don't expect any kind
of consistency.

Ah, but Greeks do, and this was one of my problems with the text in the

So, report typos to me. I'm sure there are hundreds.

That's a convertion problem, Im sure we can keep that title in "English",
"x" included. In story titles we can (for example in those cases in which
the title is still in English)... Harry, what about headers?

Actually we were told that Greeks *don't* care either, that accents are
old-fashioned, that's why we even started, because there was a short an easy
to use covertion table. I had looked at real convertion tables too at the
begininng, but it was clear that they couldn't be used, being phonetic and
with no 1-to-1 matching.

Dealing with a more complex transitteration table would increase the work by
at least an order of magnitude, we probably wouldn't even have an index in
that case, no time.

Please do not forward such advertisements to this or any other mailing list
of newsgroup. You will create a lot of enemies this way. Perhaps you are
new to the Internet, but such unsolicited ads have been around for quite a
while and have picked up the nickname "spam."

The example you mailed to the list is a particularly onerous version known
as a chain letter, promising something for nothing. It is a waste of time
and bandwidth. You may have noticed that I altered the subject line to
reflect the real message behind the one you originally sent.

Let me begin by stating that I have a nasty feeling that the more I
elaborate on this, the more offensive I get against what, after all, was
a well-intentioned effort, so I apologize if I seem to be a little harsh.

With this in mind, let me elaborate a bit further: ;-)

> So, report typos to me. I'm sure there are hundreds.

Like I said, it's more a matter of requiring an almost total re-write.
Pointing out individual typos may well prove to be more work than a
re-write. :( Perhaps some young enthusiastic Greek list member might
want to volunteer for the latter.

> That's a convertion problem, Im sure we can keep that title in "English",

The problem with that particular title (which I believe should be
translated, after all, although I am unable to check, as I don't have
that album), is that it was apparently transcribed mechanically (by a
program?), without any understanding of what was being translated!
It would be like reading "10x10" as "ten ex ten" in English!

> Actually we were told that Greeks *don't* care either, that accents are
> old-fashioned,

There are three kinds of Greeks:

1. Those who'd much rather they spoke English, if only their English
wasn't even worse than their Greek. Often recognized by being unable
to utter a single phrase without using at least one English word,
and by the erroneous Anglicization of their names from, say Dimitris
to Jim, or Vasilis to Bill. I don't think there are any such people
on this list, and you should obviously ignore any input on the Greek
language that you get from such people if you happen to encounter them.

2. Those who use the current simplified spelling of modern Greek,
as taught in Greek schools since the eighties, which has one accent
mark and no aspiration marks. These are the majority of modern
Greeks. They might omit the occasional accent mark out of haste or
laziness, but if asked to write properly, they'll definitely use
accents. Often recognized by a desire to improve their Greek.

3. Certain old fogies, like myself, who believe that the simplification
of modern Greek grammar in the 80s was too drastic and that it
proved to be a tragic mistake. Such people use two or three accent
marks and the two abolished aspiration marks. Use your judgment when
talking to such people. Their views may either be well-informed, or
simply the result of prejudice. Often recognized by their tendency
to pontificate. ;-)

My guess is that you either spoke to someone from group #1, or, more
likely, you misunderstood the extent of the simplifications that group
#2 uses.

It is my sense that as long as things are set up correctly (which may or
may not require a bit of extra work to do so), a Greek-speaking indexer
(Greek or otherwise) would not require any extra time to index stories in
correctly typed Greek. In fact, since support for Greek characters appears
to be already in place, it would take more time for this hypothetical
indexer to enter data without accents, than with accents; typing the
accents may be extra work, but the attention he would have to pay,
to make sure that he doesn't type them instinctively, is even more costly.

In any case, I don't know how useful a Greek index in its present
form would be to a non-Greek. Speaking for myself as a Greek, however,
I don't think I could use it.

It seemed to me that there ain't no such think as a Greek willing to index,
maybe you've all got an anti-index gene, I don't know :-)

Hello, I'm a program :-)

But I understood that, of course. It would be just the same in Italian,
that's why I said that it must remain as it is, "10x10". There are ways to
do that with issues' titles too, I guess.

What I thought was that this accent information came from you, but I
probably remeber wrong :-)

But who's gonna do this? You? You'd be definitely welcome :-)
I actually have no idea if the input files can be handled directly with
Greek letters or not. Now it's only the output that has them, an input entry
looks like this (never mind the added line breaks):

KX 61 h3 [issdate:1993-07] [inx:FSp] [pages:52] [price:300 Drc.]
KX 61a ARC US 242 1 c RSc RSc US [xapp:US,HDL,BRI]

As you can see, titles like "To teleytaio mpalampoy" become real Greek only
on the output files, I never types any Greek letters.

I still can't see why. It's only titles after all that are in Greek, and
titles are definitely not the most important part of an index.
