I don't think any reasoning being (that lets out Disney Marketeers) would
disagree that the direct-to-video sequels that the Mouse has been churning
out are nothing more than shameless grabs for dollars. The "films" could
certainly never be accused of trying to continue a tradition of art and
quality.
All the same, I cannot fathom why people who don't like them can't just
ignore them. If Disney were replacing the originals, rather than just
tacking on formulaic afterthoughts with Roman numerals in the title, then I
could see the beef. I've personally never acknowledged that there are more
than 2 Indiana Jones movies. I certainly never felt the urge to write the
Lucas-Spielberg team to demand that TEMPLE OF DOOM be removed from the
canon, as I could just do that myself.
I don't like all the OZ books, but no one is forcing me to purchase or even
read any of them. Still, I delight when the reproductions of the old L.
Frank Baum, Ruth Plumly Thompson, or even the Jon R. Neill volumes hit the
bookstore, as I'm finally able to own nice copies of the books I grew up
with. If BOOKS OF WONDER decides they want to issue new copies by some of
the other writers, let 'em. I'll still have my favorites to enjoy.
Now, if someone objects to the censoring of established Disney classic
animation, I'm a member of that club. Hardly a single DVD has come from
Mouse House without some snipping. Pecos Bill no longer rolls or smokes
cigarettes (which means the immortal Roy Rogers had some of his ballad cut
as well), and the Martins and the Coys can never be seen a-feudin'. And
please don't get me started on SONG OF THE SOUTH. Europeans have been able
to buy copies as recently as a couple of years ago, but I seriously doubt
that Americans will ever get to own a nice transfer without Japanese
subtitles. And I will NEVER get to see VICTORY THROUGH AIR POWER in any
form, lest our German or Japanese friends object. That doesn't stop stupid
"epics" like PERAL HARBOR" (a Disney product) from being made, though.
If Disney wishes to turn the vacuum on parents' wallets with drivel like
like SNOW WHITE II, who am I to object? Somebody's buying that stuff, bad
or not. I just wish they would recognize the historic importance of
preserving their original product instead of pretending they have a
conscience. Disney's hypocritical pretense that they are thinking of
anything other than their coffers when editing their older films is just
another excuse for people to turn Mickey posters into dartboards.

The last couple of weeks, I have recieved _no_ digests from DCML!
Is something wrong here, or have I in a strange way without knowing it
myself unsigned from the list?
Please send reasonable answers to my private e-mailadress as well as to

Re: Snow White sequels.
I'm inclined to think "And They Lived Happily Ever After" precludes
sequels. If they're living happily ever after, how can there be an
interesting story there?
On the other hand, there was an obscure American sitcom several years
ago, called "The Charmings", that showed them living happily ever
after in Suburbia. Prince's mother-in-law was living with them, as
was one of the dwarfs. Memorable scene -- Wicked Queen offering an
unwanted guest a glass of apple juice. Snow: "Moth-er!"

Fair enough, but my point was why single out the video sequel for
our wrath, when there have been so many of them in comic books? Even
Barks sort of drew one in "the Golden Christmas Tree", where he showed
the wicked witch meeting with an end more akin to the one in the real
fairy tale. (OK, he didn't show Snow White, so this doesn't count.)
As in my first posting I wondered whether I was missing something,
I'd better point out that by "sequel", in this case, I mean all those
stories showing Snow White inexplicably living with the dwarfs (visiting,
perhaps?), and not stories about Snow White living in the palace with
the prince, trying to prevent her mother from giving poisoned apple
juice to her guests. (I'd *love* to have seen this, and for this reason,
alone, I would not oppose a story of the second type. If you add to this
the radio show that I mentioned, it would seem that there are a lot of
creative things that one can do with Snow White.)

Life Magazine 4-16-45 pictures fifteen old masters. Missing is EI Quacko and Portrait of a Venetian Quack. They may be seen in DONALD DUCK by Marcia Blitz, published 1979. They also appeared on stamps released by Sierra Leone in 1995.
In addition to a complete set, i am fortunate to have obtained two different linen like books featuring the Good Housekeeping pages. One titled WALT DISNEY'S MICKEY MOUSE (1937) and a foreign release titled MICKEY MOUSE MERRY MEDLEY with a different cover. An interesting book is CHRISTMAS OF '87 by the Alexander Gallery. In beautiful color it shows the original art for many of the Good housekeeping pages. Many of these beautiful pages are available on the market at high prices. Their discovery and sale is another story.

Interesting. Should we make a petition too, to stop Don Rosa making sequels
to Barks stories? Or is that different? If so, what's the difference?
--Harry.
(only asking questions to have an interesting discussion)
I imagine most of us on this mailing list are pretty sure that Don Rosa does
sequels to Barks stories because he truly loves to work within the Barks
milieu. He certainly knows he's not going to get rich from his efforts!
Disney, however, always intends to make a lot of money from any sequel it
attempts, regardless of whatever artistic vision anyone within Disney may
hope to express through it.
In short, Don does it mainly for love, Disney does it mainly for money. Fair
difference there, I'd think.

It wasn't just this one. Disney have done video sequels already for Lady and
the Tramp, Huncback, Peter Pan and others.
My opinion was that these were ment to be "one shot" cases. They are not
TV-series, comics or something like that. Comic books I can accept, it's
serial form.
Those sequels can be nothing more than just mediocre pastiches, in these
times of political correctness, that's why they also have censored some old
classics.
Or, maybe Snow White wasn't so happy with the prince after all, and she'll
come back to dwarfs? Can you BTW use the word "dwarf" any more? What's the
correct term now for short person? And a lady living with seven men in one
household... huh? ;-)

In regard to the question of Carlos Mota illustrated stories. A Barks
story, scripted by Geoffrey Blum, will likely appear sometime this year, to
be published by Egmont. Blum has just finished making comments on Mota's

Again, I ask, why single out the Snow White sequel for our wrath? If
we are to object to video sequels, we should do for all of them (e.g.,
by not buying them), rather than signing a petition to stop the release
of a particular video.
> My opinion was that these were ment to be "one shot" cases. They are not

I'm not sure why you object to one-shots, while you don't mind serial
form. What's good about the continuing stooooory (to borrow a phrase from
the Muppet show) of, say, Snow White, and why would a one-shot story
be bad? Besides, those comic book stories didn't have any continuity,
so you might say that they were all one-shots.
> What's the correct term now for short person?
Growth hormone deficient person?
> And a lady living with seven men in one household...
Not to mention seven men living all alone in the woods in the same
household. Disney should really be ashamed of themselves!
Actually, a lady living with seven men in one household could be their
mother, or some kind of foster mother, as Snow White was clearly portrayed
in the film. Even the dwarfs were portrayed as children rather than as
grown men.
I wonder if in the new movie they'll take political correctness to its
limit, making a couple of the dwarfs black, even though they weren't in
the original. If I'm not mistaken, Gladstone (or was it Disney?) had
done this for some of the background characters in their comics, even
though Barks had drawn his stories for a market that pretended that
black people did not exist.

I wasn't singleing out this one. SW is current one, going to be produced
soon, and I guess that's why this petition was made to consider this movie.
Wrath is bit too strong word. I'm not strongly and fanatically objecting
this sequel thing. I just think it is needless to do them.

Slight misapprehension here. I'm not objecting one-shots. SW-movie was made
as one-shot, something that has no need to have sequels. So it should
remain. Comics that have been made, are just byproducts to the film and
there can be as many episodes as someone is willing to do. I just think this
way.. Why? eh...
Perhaps we should have Casablanca II? Well, we got Gone With the Wind II.
Ah, if Hollywood studios have no logic, why should I have? ;-)
>Besides, those comic book stories didn't have any continuity,
>so you might say that they were all one-shots.
Absolute continuity is not necessary. Bond films are quite weakly related to
eachother in means on continuity.
Barks himself made sequels: for example the second appearance of Magica de
Spell can be seen as sequel to The Midas Touch -story.

Snow White and Seven Growth Hormone Deficient Persons!
