I was with Cavazzano last week end, with Tito Faraci and other friends to
introduce his brand new exhibition of original artworks, in Milan, and his
catalogue (with his complete chrononology of works, Disney and non-Disney),
compiled with the FUNDAMENTAL IDUCKS' crew support. Incidentally, it was
published by Edizioni Il Penny (by Stefano Bartolomei) and contains lots of
illustrations never printed before.
Well, also for chronology purposes, in the late years I spoke with Giorgio
many times about this story, *marvelously* drawn by him...
Bat the truth is that it was NEVER ended. I think he made something like a
half of the total amount of "Huey, Dewey and Louie--World of the
Dragonlords", around sisxty four-tiered pages. The reason of this is hard to
be explained. I even don't know if the storyline was totally completed, or
if major changements needed to be done when the work was in progress.
I really hope that this big, largely awaited project can go on and that the
story can see the light, in Italy, in Denmark and in the whole world!

Hi all
Today I've checked my votes' page, a long long time
after my last visit.
Well, there are a lot of votes in the 10 questions
I've put there!
I'd like to share the results with you. The polls are
still active. Both Greeks and non-Greeks
are voting to the same polls.

For question 1:
"Which is the best Don Rosa's story?"
Well, Don's Lo$ series is still on the top in Greece.
When Komix started the publishing of
the Lo$ in 1996, I never believed that the series will
be so popular after 6 years :-)
So, 49% of the votes go to Lo$ (total 213 votes) and
15% to the "Guardians of the Lost
Library" (my favourite one-part story by Don)
For Question 2:
"In your opinion, who is the best duck artist?"
As I've expected, Don Rosa is no.1 duck artist in
Greece. Komix is handling his stories very
good, with superb colouring, articles etc.
So, 43% of the votes go to Don Rosa (total 216 votes)
and 34% to Carl Barks. It's interesting
that Giorgio Cavazzano took more votes (12%) than
Romano Scarpa (only 1 vote, 0%)
For Question 3:
"How often are you buying Komix magazine?"
46% go to "Always (12 months)" and 17% to the
subscribers (total 216 votes)
For Question 4:
"Choose the best Italian artist"
Well, the answers here confused me a bit. Romano
Scarpa is on the top here with 48% (total 181
votes) and Giorgio Cavazzano is the second best artist
with 25%. So, the best Italian artist
is Romano Scarpa, but he's not the best when he draws
Ducks! Weird! :-)
For Question 5:
"In your opinion, which Disney Magazine is the best?"
Well, since we are in Greece, Komix is the best
magazine on the solar system :-)
Komix: 54%
Zio Paperone: 15%
Picsou: 8%
(total 179)
In my opinion, Picsou has good stories but too many
ads and non-disney-related articles and
matterial. But IT IS a nice magazine.
For Question 6:
"Do you like Don Rosa's stories which are based from
Carl Barks older stories
(like the "Return to Plain Awful" or "Return to
Xanadu")?"
And yes, Don's sequels are victorious :-)
72% of the votes go to "Yes" and only 17% to "No"
(total 184). I love these kind of stories,
which are equal (or even better) to Carl Barks' first
original stories.
For Question 7:
"Which story do you want Komix to publish soon?"
Well, 33% go to "All of Them", then "Quest for
Kalevala" takes 25% (total 157).
"The Quest for Kalevala" will be published in Komix
this year, after the summer period, between
September and November's issues. That's for sure, I've
asked a Komix editor :-)
For Question 8:
"Which character is your favourite one?"
The rich, tightwad Unca Scrooge took 52% and Donald
34% (total 155). I was expecting the opposite results,
since Donald is the most popular disney
character.Mickey took only 4 votes (3%).
Maybe Scrooge will be the favourite character in
Greece in a few years, who knows?

I love the really BIG stories (like Lo$ or some

I don't know the way PM team follow but it is not really convincing.
There's so many stories wich were not published in France (or a long
time ago) - i'd like so much PM team use them.
The "false 30th anniversary" copy was very promising with its
"not very collector layout" exhumation of old Italian and French
stories - it seems that hope will stay a hope...
I prefer not talk about the intrusion of sicky non Disney stories... ugh!
Why don't they use PKNA for example... unadventurous behaviour.
There's so many GOOD stories created around the world and they
get a (not too bad) Strobl story.
You know, the good French Disney magazine actually seems to be
Super Picsou G?ant.

Well, Le Journal de Mickey already used to print non-Disney stories (because they were King Features
strips which were available I guess) such as Mandrake, The Katzenjammer Kids, ... But these were
*good*. Now they'll print anything regardless of the quality. And there no longer are interesting
articles as there used to be (whether in LJM or PM).
Reason: the editors are obviously not true fans and prefer to try and pease everyone by including
anything except the good things and lowering the level (very little text in the so-called
"articles", when there is it's only a very few simplistic sentences-- ex: "Disney made theme parks"
:b ).

They do reprint interesting stories-- by De Vita for instance.

I have no idea as to the proportion of Italian / Egmont / French stories. I stopped buying regulraly several years ago and am only getting reacquainted with French magazines now.

The Greek voters were not necessarily irrational when they voted Romano Scarpa
the best Italian Disney comics artist, and voted Giorgio Cavazzano's Duck
stories best. Logic dictates that those voters, as a group, think that
Scarpa's non - Duck artwork (i.e. Mouse Universe stories) is so excellent, that
he is the greatest of the Italian Disney comic artists. The fact that those
same readers feel that he is only the second, or third, or fourth best
Italian "Duck" artist does not reduce his excellence. These are the same
feelings that I have. As I admittedly had my taste in "Duck art" molded by
first being introduced to it by Barks, I lean towards preferences in like
styles. Therefore, although I DO prefer the results of any experienced and
artistically-flaired hand, the chosen style of the artist is always a factor. I
DO appreciate the Ducks of Scarpa, but less so than Daan Jippes(Barks
influenced style), Freddy Milton (early work), Ben Verhagen, Jan Gulbransson
(later work), and even Pat Block's best work. Yet, I enjoy reading his Duck
stories very much. I feel that Scarpa's Mouse artwork is "classic", - with
comperable quality to that of Gottfredson, Gonzales, Wright and Moores of my
youth. It is in the first tier of my favourite style for Mouse story
atmosphere. Scarpa's Duck artwork (because of the style) is only in my second
tier of Duck story atmosphere, along with the work of Tony Strobl (pre-1959
work), Daan Jippes' "Murry influenced style", and other great artwork that is
not in the particular style that allows me to enter the "World of the Ducks"
completely, while reading the story.
