The preview for issue 1 of BOOM!??s new ongoing DuckTales book is up at http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=8748 .
Warren Spector knows his Barks.

I'll say so! Note that the curator (although a bit grumpy) looks like the one from The Golden Helmet! The Helmet itself is even there, although I think that shouldn't have been shown. That's just a Donald tale.

Note that there's a Scrooge sequel: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=D+AA1989B42 . I don't remember whether Scrooge got hold of the Golden Helmet in that story, though.

It's too bad that story hasn't been released in America.

That Scrooge story was made by two boys (I think they were 12) as part of a contest in the Danish weekly... so it's not really up to professional standards.

Interesting to see Rockerduck in a DuckTales story. I wonder how they'll use Glomgold. If they're bringing in different characters, IMO Brigitta MacBridge might also make a nice addition to the cast. I'm surprised the original series never used her actually. The story is reminding me of the Son of the Son a little actually. I liked the nod to Rosa's "Life and Times" as well. It does break DuckTales continuity with the Fleece, since in the DuckTales Scrooge never actually takes the Fleece back to Duckburg. Then again I suppose that could be for the best. I wonder if they'll explain the change of colors in Scrooge's coat (since in the Golden Fleece flashback he actually wears red and grey.) I would call this an interesting amalgam of various duck "universes."

John D Rockerduck is in a Duck Tales story? I would like to see that.

It does look like they're trying to create a "Barks-Rosa/DuckTales TV show" hybrid universe. That's an interesting choice, but it remains to be seen how well this works ... many parts of the two universes are irreconcilable. Also, I'm not sure how the earlier announcement that this series would be set in the same continuity as Boom's Darkwing Duck title fits in; looks like Launchpad is still a McDuck employee here. I had hoped that this would be a series set after the DuckTales TV show ended, maybe revealing why Launchpad went to St. Canard, how Donald returned from the navy to reclaim custody of the boys, and perhaps segueing into a "Quack Pack" type scenario with the teenage versions of the nephews living with Donald (but still prominently featuring Scrooge and using anthropomorphic Duckburg residents instead of the Quack Pack version, of course).

Still, with the apparent cancellation of CDRR, questions remain about how many issues of DuckTales Boom will be putting out ...

Notice all the bad guys in that splash panel? In addition to Rockerduck, Magica, Glomgold, and the Beagles (looks like a mix of Barksian and Ducktales Beagles), it looks like Mickey's enemies Pete and the Blot are present, along with Arpin Lusene, Emil Eagle, and Barks' "pig villain"--quite an assortment.

It's not a splash panel. This was the original "B" cover by "Darkwing Duck" artist James Silvani. Now they're obviously using it as a special "C" (incentive or whatever) cover. It has nothing to do with Spector's story itself, but James loves to do those character cameos.

It seems like a very interesting story and hopefully I can read it if they release it in Sweden. But why does Warren Spector do a DuckTales story and not a regular duck-story especially if he is using Barks references - like the Golden Fleece from Barks' story and not the one from DuckTales.

I know this is of topic but on a painting of Scrooge in the DuckTales Movie he wears the red and grey coat which I found interesting as it's my favorite color scheme - but he probably has changed coat after the events of finding the golden fleece, I guess, and they will probably not give a explanation for that in this series.

Picked this up Wednesday... not bad... the series definitely has potential. I like how they're using Launchpad and Webby (though Webby questioning dinosaurs seems to be out of character considering the whole last season of the TV show) but the non-DuckTales universe cameos are a little odd.. Rockerduck, Daisy, Fethry, and generic Beagle Boys.
If you're going to do a DuckTales book, make it true to the TV show.

I agree with your review. I've read the issue as well, and felt it was spotty both in terms of art as well as reach. Rocekerduck, Fethry and Daisy seem out of place in this universe (although her reference to Scrooge as "Mr. McDuck" on-air was a nice touch); again, I fail to see how this story fits with the "Darkwing Duck Universe". Also, there were a surprisingly large number of Rosa references and Donald was mentioned/hinted at much more than you'd expect from a book supposedly grounded in the universe of the TV show ... making me think that maybe we'll see Donald's return to Duckburg chronicled in this series after all.

Especially considering he's on the cover - well one of them anyway (the one I picked up) I just picked it up today. I'll say again that including all those characters just makes it more interesting, though IMO, the story's biggest problem is that Spector just can't decide whether he wants to make his story closer to the original DuckTales series or to the "mainstream Disney comic universe," so he incorporates elements of both. I guess this is kind of like the Scrooge equivalent to DC's All Star or Marvel's Ultimate universe. My guess is that the whole point in reviving the DuckTales series was really just to cash in the success of Darkwing and attract the audience who grew up with it, even though it's actually closer to "mainstream."

A few other observations: Launchpad is drawn seems drawn a little closer to his Darkwing Duck incarnation.

Is the golden goose on page 7 supposed to be the one from the finale - that nearly turned the entire world to gold before becoming a golden statue itself when it returned to the temple? IMO such "Easter eggs" are fine unless they make no sense. Then again it could also be a callback to Barks' "Isle of the Golden Geese," which could actually make sense.

Webby is becoming sort of an ingrate wanting Scrooge to return all the treasures he obtained - especially considering IIRC she and Mrs. Beakley were living in poverty before Scrooge hired them. The only time I recall such a difference in philosophy between the two of them was the Luck of the Ducks episode (which I think most fans of the show agree is not that good an episode anyway.) It's not like Scrooge really needed a foil in this story - that's Rockerduck. She also seemed a little put off by Scrooge's affections on page 16. I guess you could say she's just growing a little older and thus shaping her own character a little farther away from Scrooge, even though she doesn't look any older.

Having King Fulla Cola disappointed with his purchase - this just deviates from Barks' original story and the episode. Just for purposes of Spector's own story I guess.

Adding a "subplot" about starving eskimos to the tale of Scrooge finding his first nugget? >:( I don't think so. Again, Spector sort of ruins both the Barks story and the episode and just sort of tarnishes the legend.

I honestly don't feel it's fair of the kids to say - in the examples shown anyway - that Scrooge did not make his fortune completely square, though if Spector wanted the nephews to callback to the Voodoo African Tribe, IMO that would've been fine.

So Rockerduck's plan seems to give up his own treasures just so Scrooge will give up more of his? Ooh! That plot makes perfect sense! Wink! Wink! Well anyway I guess I can see why they didn't use Glomgold for this story.

Is that Moliarty from Darkwing with all the classic Barks/Rosa villains? And then in the next panel the Beagle Boys appear as they do in the comics. :/ And why Moliarty out of all Darkwing's villains anyway?

Agent X spying on the kids on page 11 was actually kinda creepy.

Please pardon the expression, but what the duck happened to Launchpad on page 14? He seems to be in Rockerduck's office, but seems to just disappear after the fisrt panel.

Despite Spector's insistance on initially wanting to write a DuckTales video game, I'm starting to wonder if Spector has actually seen ANY episode of the series since there was already an Agent X character (All Ducks on Deck.)

Was this Farquardt character in an episode? I don't remember. He seems vaguely familiar.

I think Scrooge's decision not to take the boys along to Rippan Taro was justified, but why Spector's? And then at the end they show up as he wanted anyway? :/ Why have them come with Launchpad instead. That actually borders on child abuse, IMO, though Launchpad actually didn't crash the seaplane at the end.

The ending I don't think makes new readers too eager to pick up the next issue.

Anyway I admit I had high hopes for this new series, ideally matching or maybe even topping the acme of the original TV series. I grew up with DuckTales. It would call it the most significant part of childhood in fact, and Scrooge and the Ducks have remained with me into my adult years. I admit I'm enjoying most of the new Darkwing series (though the new Rescue Rangers...not so much.) Well anyway, it could be worse I suppose - it could be a live action/CGI movie. Maybe the next issue will improve.
