Topic: BOOM!'s DuckTales comics

I thought the first two issues of DuckTales had some of the worst art I've ever seen, but this tops it. I can't believe The Walt Disney Company would even allow their characters to be published like this. Just like Kneon said it looks like someone other than the artist did a tracing job, as if all they had were the unfinished sketches. It reminds me of a couple of bootleg Chinese Mickey Mouse comics that I have. This is a sad way to end the Boom era.

Ugh... that's offensively bad.
Not only is it insulting to me as a customer to release something that terrible and expect me to pay for it, but it actually embarrasses me as someone who strives to see Disney comics get more respect in the North American market.

I don't think Disney requires to approve everything in advance. They did that in the final days of Gladstone's first run, but nowadays? At least with the European productions it's sheer impossible and the publishers can -- more or less -- do whatever they want. But I guess *if* they had seen this, it just would've been one more reason to revoke BOOM!'s license.

Yup, and we're not the only ones who realize the HORRID depths this particular series has lowered Disney Comics to:

Comforting to know there are many others who realize how ridiculous it is that this book was ever released!

Poor Warren Spector can't catch a break. Between this and Epic Mickey, he's not exactly on a hot streak.

Wow...I´m speechless. I have been reading Disney comics for 24 years and this is the worst piece of artwork I´ve EVER seen. I´m familiar with all the American classics, Italian and German comic books, but not even in a cheap Italian weekly (which are mass products and often produced in a hurry) I´ve seen such badly drawn and colored comics. It´s painfully sloppy done...seriously, it shows that whoever drew this piece of duck trash did it without any devotion.
Congrats Boom!, you won the trophy for producing the worst duck comics worldwide!

ROFL!!!

To be honest, I thought Ducktales #1 and #2 didn't look that bad (worse than DWD and CDRR, sure, but not *that* bad, I mean it still looked like it was produced by professional artists)
And the rest of Ducktales #3 is more or less the same quality, EXCEPT for 2 or 3 pages that were clearly handled by someone who wasn't an artist.
Did they lose these pages at the last minute, just when it was supposed to go to print??
What would it have cost them to delay this by a week instead?

I'm still giving Warren the benefit of the doubt. Epic Mickey was GREAT, and the only major point that was criticised by the reviews wasn't the story but the camera.
I think he was just too overbooked to do this Ducktales comic and/or someone at Boom! ruined his work on it.

:D This topic is about a disaster, but for some reason I find it hilarious!!! :D Sorry about that, but this is not just a train wreck, it's... it's... I don't have the vocabulary to say what it is. (terribly horrendous? un-un-un-un-un-great? ending on an unhearbly low note? Monty Python's Flying Circus?)
The artwork is bad, but I might've seen worse. Some early art or so. But in short, yeah, this. Is bad.

Kuh-boom, b'tches!

While I'm sure you're not the only one who thinks it was GREAT, the lackluster reviews suggest that it's a minority opinion. Regardless, though, today's big-budget videogames are worked on by HOW many hundreds of people? I think it would be a bit much to suggest that the producer should get the lion's share of the credit. Besides which, making a videogame has exactly nothing to do with telling a comic-book story. The evidence would seem to suggest that he's simply not very good at the latter. I'm pretty sure the only reason he was hired to do it was from some perception that the series' profile would be improved if it could be associated with a guy who worked on a Disney videogame.

...and although what's happening with the Ducktales comic is kind of tragic, DuckburgUSA's image is still hilarious.

Let me clarify something that may not have been picked up on previously: the repeated panels I used to make the gag DuckTales #4 preview are not only enlarged & repeated, AND poorly drawn/edited, AND out of sync with Rockerduck's exclamation to Cinnamon...

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa436/DuckburgUSA/DT3OffendingPanel.jpg

...but Rockerduck is NOT addressing Mr. Billups in this panel either. That dog-nosed character you see with the Fonzie 'do is his Butler, Jeeves! Mr. Billups (as he is called in this continuity) is the curator of the Duckburg Museum. You know, the white bearded gent from Carl Barks' "The Golden Helmet"? So there's another flaw to this steaming pile of a comic page: two terribly drawn panels with lousy color enlarged and repeated and the character's dialogue is directed to the wrong individual TWICE.

But the damage already began in kaboom!'s DuckTales #1. Observe these panels from page 18 as Webby and Scrooge have just cast off for Rippan Taro:

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa436/DuckburgUSA/DT1A.jpg

OK - Launchpad's coming too. He's clearly present in panel 1 and visible through the porthole window in panel 2. Probably a good idea to have some muscle & comic relief on such a voyage. But wait a minute - when they have some bad weather and a high-seas adventure, L.P.'s nowhere to be found? By page 22 when they reach the island, guess who flies in?

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa436/DuckburgUSA/DT1B.jpg

So Launchpad wasn't supposed to be on the boat at all. Oopsies, that's a pretty big thing to overlook, all you hard-working kaboom! "editors." But it goes to show you the returns on this book have been diminishing since before issue #1 even ended. You can reference this in your copy of kaboom!'s DuckTales #1. I swear to Barks I've only scanned the images in, and did not manipulate the art.

Life IS like a hurricane and it tore through your wallets and hopes, leaving some bad feelings behind. But that's cool, 'cuz we can still order that $9.99 variant DuckTales #1 Cover C, right? I'd really like to see the BOOM! hype machine try and argue any of this. But they're probably too busy drafting this week's e-mail blast to their entire address book to "make sure you pre-order our titles from your local comics shop and put off that pesky trade-waiting!"

KABOOM, bitches!!!
Steet
Wow, I did not notice Launchpad on the boat in the first issue, but you're right.
Some people also noticed that there were copy/pasted drawings in the first and second issues already. So it's not just one issue problem : it's the WHOLE arc that is flawed. And it keeps being worse and worse. They REALLY don't care.

I'm intrigued on how will the fourth issue be...will they improve, or will they do even worse?? At least, the positive side is that this comic is pretty FUNNY, even if it wasn't intended :) And I'm sure it will go down in history of Disney comics and everyone will remember it!

EDIT : Since we're talking about flaws, I'd also like to pinpoint this...

Impressive. There is so much text splattered that they almost covered Daisy's face with it :P

The phrase 'flagship title' is getting less and less meaning lately.

Dude, that test looks great... the staging and layout worked, I understood everything that was happening without any dialouge, and the colors were brilliant!
