Well, sure, the book is still going. It's once you've turned in those last issues that freelancers usually have to worry. And they've got you slated for two in one month! Just be careful! Kneon is right, all the warning signs are there. Books getting canceled, layoffs, radio silence on all fronts...
If your payments start arriving later and later, be careful...the company might be about to pull a "Devil's Due."

My guess: this is a pretty international forum, so most posters (I'm one of them) have never read BOOM!'s Darkwing Duck comics. Also, it's mostly the old Standard Characters (Mickey, Donald etc.) that are being discussed here.

There's DW threads, apparently nothing current though. Seems a lot of Boom story discussion around here kind of imploded into that "Uh-oh..." thread.
I'm a DW reader though, and the series will definitely be missed come November.

I too have enjoyed the DW books that Boom put out. Much better stories than the classics since they've had the Disney license. It's too bad it's going away as well. Boom really brought a lot of life to DW.

Yes, it's been my experience that you'll keep getting paid if they need you for future work.
Now, I haven't said that there are unpaid freelancers at Boom. If I were a betting man, I'd bet on Boom going bust in the not-too-distant future. By the time the public hears about unpaid freelancers, a publisher is generally in an irreversible death spiral.
My recommendation for Boom! is that if (and that's a big "if") there are freelancers that have gone unpaid, that they cut them a check ASAP. The stigma of unpaid freelancers would be much, much worse PR than what one botched issue of DUCKTALES has been.
Just sayin. ;)

Just read the first issue. I enjoyed a lot Massaroli's art on his three pages. It would be great if the entire series was draw entirely by Castellani or Massaroli.

As forum admin, I can respect your decision, cacou. I'm hoping this is simply a preventative measure, and that you haven't been contacted by Boom! about this thread.

I thought that there wasn't any source or element that would indicate Vesuvius' statement is true. Maybe if Vesuvius finds the original source (I tried to look for it) and it is somehow reliable, he could link it from here?
To add something to the discussion, though, I'd like to point out that in general companies in Europe may very well not pay freelancers, for a variety of reasons, or pay them very late. On this aspect I'm not sure that things are much better here than they are in the US :(

Good to hear that you weren't being harassed, and I understand the need to be judicious when it comes to speculation. We may never know how Mr. Rosa truly feels about Boom, given that he doesn't have much of an online presence these days.

The business model of print comics has always been dodgy. There have been several smaller publishers go under in North America over the past few years and all showed similar warning signs to what we've seen with Boom.
One of the most notorious was Dreamwave Productions -- who stiffed freelancers for thousands -- while the former president (Pat Lee) went off to work for Marvel at a very high page rate. There was also some shadiness in regards to who got the proper art and writing credit on their TRANSFORMERS titles. It was a mess, but thankfully IDW stepped in and has been pretty steady with their TRANSFORMERS line for the past 5 or 6 years now.
And Crossgen... and Devil's Due... the list goes on and on. I've had friends at all of those publishers, many who have yet to get paid every dime they're owed. My advice for current Boom! freelancers is get all of your money, because all the same warning signs are there!
In North America, the most financial stability lies with "the Big Two" -- Marvel and DC. Both companies are owned by large, stable corporations and the chances of a freelancer getting stiffed are pretty slim.

James Silvani: It's good to have you here! I'm a huge fan of your work on Darkwing Duck! I have to admit, it's your art that keeps me coming back...I just read #15, and I have to tell you that you're crisp, clean work and the way you convey the action and humor are top notch, and really take the style and spirit of the show to the next level.
If another artist took over, I doubt I'd stay with the book... after "Suff-rage" and "Constance Dention" I have had about all I can take of Ian Brill's brand of "comedy."
