Don and I have talked about this a bit, including the possible
misunderstanding of his exclamation at the first posting by Michael of the
details of the suit. His "woo-hoo-hoooooo" was nothing more than an
expression of surprise at the information Michael presented. I have no
authority to put words in Don's mouth, but he assured me his written
outburst had no hidden meaning of either support or lack thereof for anyone
mentioned in the lawsuit. Considering what happened last time Don offered
any written comments about the Carl Barks Studio and its members, I
seriously doubt anybody will be able to draw Don into this conversation.

I just received the Danish version (thanks, Ole!) but I can't read it.
From looking at the pictures, I can say it *looks* like a good story.

What struck me was the *cover* that was on the Danish version! That
looks very good, almost like a Marco Rota cover!
Then I realised that Don did not make this cover himself; the editor
constructed it from various panels from the story. With a very good
result (maybe even better than when Don *had* made a cover...8-)

At least you got the Danish version! It was published as a separate supplement
along with the regular issue of ANDERS AND. My subscription copy arrived, as it
always does, in a sealed plastic mailing bag. The regular issue of ANDERS AND
was in the bag, but the supplement with "El Dorado" was not! Sniff...

Are there *original* stories currently *produced* par Fleetway for this
magazine?

They couldn't pronounce it, the "u" doesn't exist in English. In
English, "u" is "ou" and "ou" is nothing (is that clear?).

<<Let's write letters of support, encouragement, and of course, birthday
greetings to Carl...I have made arrangements to get Carl these postings
without having to go through his "handlers".>>

An excellent idea, but might it be better to send a "joint greeting" as
the membership of the Disney Comics Mailing List (or at least, those of us
who wish to participate)? It would be more considerate of Carl, perhaps, to
send a "group wish," rather than a whole carload of individual ones.
Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive, but recent events have disposed me
towards being as solicitous of Carl's peace of mind as possible.

Hi folks,

I have now dug out my copy of "Donaldus Anas atque nox Saraceni" and can
add two things to my last post:

a) the address of the ELI: European Language Institute, P.O. Box 6, 62019
Recanati, Italia (as of 1984)

b) the following text/list, reproduced here without any diacritics, accents
etc.:

Collectio "Disney Lingua Latina" complectitur X volumina, quorum iam edita
sunt:

I. Donaldus Anas atque nox Saraceni
II. Michael Musculus et lapis sapientiae
III. Donaldus Anas et actiones fiduciae
IV. Scrugulus et Radius contra Procellam

(taken from the back of the volume; meaning: the series "Disney in Latin"
will upon completion consist of 10 volumes, the following of which are
already published:)

That's all for now.

Best regards, Frank

Please excuse this un-mailing-list type posting, but I was wondering whether
some kind soul could tell me where I might buy pre-1975 editions of The
Phantom Blot. I'm particularly interested in "The Case of the Disappearing
Diamonds" (and also his origin, in the Walt Disney Comics and Stories serial).

Regards,

David King.

It wasn't, I even doubt if Barks made a detailed pencilled script of it.
Maybe someone in contact with him can ask? (If the time is right for that
of course.) At this moment I'm working on a page on lost / unpublished
Barks works, so such information is *very* welcome!

Please contact me if you can help me.

If it's not already published in the hardcover CBL, I certainly would
like to have it!

Why did Barks never make a painting of the lost "Mythtic Mystery" half-
page overview on Duckburg? Wouldn't that be a marvelous painting?

Greetings,

You simply shouldn't be too hasty ... I had assumed that the Latin editions
I described in my two previous posts are out of print, but it seems they
aren't. According to the Catalogo dei libri in commercio, the following
titles are available from the ELI at Lire 15.800 each, and according to the
VLB (Verzeichnis lieferbarer Buecher), they are also available from German
(schoolbook) publisher Klett Verlag at DM 17,80 (or 17,10 Swiss francs or
130 Austrian shillings) each:

Donaldus Anas atque nox Saraceni, ISBN 3-12-666800-3, published 1984;
Donaldus Anas et actiones fiduciae, ISBN 3-12-666200-5, publ. 1984;
Michael Musculus et "Lapis sapientiae", ISBN 3-12-666100-9, publ. 1984;
Michael Musculus et regina Africae; ISBN 3-12-666700-7, publ. 1986;
Scrugulus et radius contra procellam; ISBN 3-12-666400-8, publ. ?;
Scrugulus in re vere mirabili, ISBN 3-12-666900-X, publ. 1985.

The ISBN given is the German one. The Italian ISBNs weren't stated; only
that those of ELI titles begin with either 88-85148- or 88-8148-.

The "Catalogo ..." also gives the ELI's current address:

European Language Institute; Via Brecce, 25; 60025 Loreto (Ancona); Tel.:
(071) 976 465; Fax 977851.

That's it, I hope (until I find something else on this ;-)).

I don't know how or where you might find these two stories. I do, however,
own 6 of the 7 Phantom Blot issues (missing #5), and several of the WDC&S
Blot stories.

The Phantom Blot's origin has seen reprint numerous times: "Mickey Mouse
Outwits the Phantom Blot") And "the Case of the Disnappearing Dianmonds"
Appeared as a story in the 7th (and final) issue of "The Phantom Blot's" If
there
is anything about either of these two stories I might be able to tell you,

Hi!

The current issue of the Germany "Micky Maus" weekly (8/98) carries the
Gladstone Gander anniversary story "the sign with the triple distelfinks"

**very little spoiler warning**

The Title is translated into "Gustav, der Pechvogel"
(Gladstone, the unlucky person).

**End of the spoiler**

Page 6 is split up into two half pages, to make some room for advertisement.
And on the cover of the MM magazine there is even a text that says
"Jubiläumscomic: Das schreckliche Geheimnis des Gustav Gans!"
(Anniversary comic: The terrible secret of Gladstone Gander")
as far as I remember it hasn´t happened often before that there was such an
ad for a story on the cover of the german MM-weekly.

And one last remark: Now that Ehapa also prints the artists and writers,
they always write
"Koautor: Don Rosa (Story & Zeichnung)"
(co-author: Don Rosa (script and drawing)...I am just wondering co-whom? ;-)

Thanks for the suggestion Chris!

For all of the ML members who might not be able to find an appropriate card
that expresses your thoughts let's try this plan also....

Privately E-mail me your birthday greetings and I'll package them up along
with the cards and send them off to Carl! Remember...March 10 is the
deadline

The colouring is IMHO the main problem when Don's stories are being printed
here in Norway.
I wish they'd use stronger and graded colours.

And why, oh why, would anyone dredge this matter up again, especially in a
worldwide forum?

Until now, the contents of that booklet were known mostly to only the direct
recipients. Now it can be spread electronically all over the globe, and
taken out of context, as the posters comments prove. All sorts of
allegations were made and *ALL* of them had to be retracted, as none were
true. It is not simply that Don *claimed* they were false -- no witnesses
at that crowded public event could be produced to substantiate the CB Studio
allegations.

I knew that if anyone started looking into and offering opinions on the
present difficulty between Mr. Barks and his former associates we would wind
up regurgitating old news as people "best remember it," which is almost
always incorrectly so.

Why is it that people who claim to admire someone so often manage to cast
them in a bad light?

I almost never post to this list, but always enjoy reading the insightful
comments on the stories and characters. Hollywood-style gossip turns me
off, though, and prompts me to make a little noise. I recommend that if
anyone wants to turn the pages of time back a couple of years, they can at
least post facts, not innuendo and unproven slander.

But if this ISN'T true (and it (the story) sounds doubtful to me), then
that *still* doesn't explain *why* they did it.
