I suddenly can't get onto Per's website. When I try, I get something saying
"Netscape is unable to locate the following server: <www.update.uu.se> The
server does not have a DNS entry." I tried repeatedly, and I double-checked
to make sure I typed right. What's going on?

Well, actually it's a (yearly) trade SHOW and you can't really BUY - that is, I
believe, on the last two days (mon/tue) the remaining books are sold (very
cheap) or even given away, because nobody wants to carry them home
- but I dont know, how this is handled with comics-companies in general
or Egmont in particular. Byron, Peer?
Re: Panini - I'm not sure I want to collect them all, I just buy some

My opinion was always, that Gyro was an inventor, and Ludwig was a
"know it all" scientist of the, well, social and literary sciences
("Geisteswissenschaft" as opposed to "Naturwissenschaft" in German).
So, if you wanted an Atlantean scroll translated you'd go to LVD, but if
you needed a means to get there GG was your man!
(PS: Funny social-cultural fact: psychatry and other therapies are
still not well thought of in Vienna's general public today!)

Started today with *6 million* issues in the whole of Europe, of which
2,8 million(!!!) are German. "Obelix' Cruise" (?) ("La Galere d'Obelix",
"Obelix auf Kreuzfahrt") is quite delightful. Not bad for an
Uderzo-solo, Kirk Douglas appears as "Spartakis the Slave", and the
crew stops over in ...Atlantis...! The name of an inker is given too
(that's new!) All in all not a classic, but worth the money.

I don't know why that is, but if you temporarily can't find a DNS
entry for www.update.uu.se you might try substituting the real name
of the computer instead: zeke.update.uu.se. Don't use that name in
links on pages though -- some other computer might take over the
responsibility of being WWW server for Update.

Let me do some explaining.
There are "story codes" and "story codes".
1. The story code as appears on (a reprint of) the story itself. On the old
Western stories (Dell / Gold Key), there usually was no code at all. When
reprinted, the story only got an abbreviation of the original issue. So all
stories in WDC 123 would be coded "WDC 123".
2. The story code that's in the Disney comics Database. There, every story
must have a unique code. So the stories in WDC 123 have codes like
"W WDC 123-01", "W WDC 123-02", etc.
Now Per has built a feature "look up a story by its code". In the case of
old Western stories, when you type "W WDC 123", you get a list of all
story codes starting with that. Then you can choose the story you want,

That's why I said the story code was *something like* W DG 33. Typing in
this will lead you to the right story, eventually.

books. I remember some Gerstein remarks on old Brer Rabbit stories, for instance.
And in *very* few cases, Becattini was in error.

The Washington Post had an article yesterday (10/9) on China's effort to
create its own comics/cartoon characters as opposed to Western ones. As
you might expect, these don't look very interesting and spend a lot of time
espousing Confucian maxims. However, the article did mention that the
Disney company is very popular and has 180,000 subscribers to its comic
there. There was some discussion of Mickey Mouse's (older) good-natured
trickster role as being more interesting than the Chinese mouse knockoffs
are. I don't have the article in front of me so I can't be more specific.

I've been straightening up my room, packaging up lots of comics, throwing out
lots of trash, and I came across volumes of the recent Uncle Scrooge
Adventures albums that Gladstone is publishing. What I'd like to know, is,
is Gladstone, or any of the other licensees, selling slipcases to hold the
albums?
If not, I think a variation on Don Rosa's recent anniversary cover, with the
floating heads, would look very nice, and be somewhat affordable.
On a related note.... The upcoming Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck
hardcover from Gladstone. (That is, sometime in the future.)
I would like to see, if possible, small asterices located next to the panels,
noting entries in Rosa's bibliography. Also, the family tree could serve as
endpapers, with a special section at the end containing the covers, the two
"extra" chapters which appeared after the series, and a "making of" essay
written by Don Rosa. Cover it in leather (or acceptable alternative) and
stamp it with the McDuck family crest. Add a signature plate, and sell it
for $50.

First of all my sincere apologies for cluttering 'n' crossposting and
suchlike heinous crimes 'gainst netiquette.
On October 28th I'll begin a new job, as Keeper of the Records with the
County of Halland County Council (well, I don't know a better way to say
"Landstinget Halland" in English :-).
This means I'll be leaving Lund University and Lund.
