If I remember correctly, that happens in the Barks
10-pager in which Gyro invents a superstrong dye that

result that the tap water in Duckburg turns red. Li'l
Helper imitates Gyro's habit of hitting himself on the
head to get an idea, smashes the lightbulb, and
replaces it with a much bigger one. Later we see
Helper struggling to cope with the extra weight,
perhaps even sweating :)

Hi!
I've been reading Rosa's new Gyro story a couple of times now and started
to wonder how superhelium actually works. When Gyro demonstrates it to
Donald he says that it forms a solid film when contacted with metal. Then
when Helper punctures the film gas starts to come out. But shouldn't it
have become a solid when it touched the coins inside. Well, that could be
explained with air being a catalyst for the reaction. But then again
shouldn't the hole Helper made close when the gas again has contact with
metal and air. Anyway, this bugs me a lot since I'm desperately
trying to become a chemist in the distant future.
Other than that it's a very nice story about Gyro and his best friend. It
reminds me of an Italian story Archimede e la scomparsa di Edi (I TL
2266-2) where Helper gets lost on a test flight and its lamp brakes. A
farmer finds it and changes the lamp. The lamp is different than the usual
one and Helper doesn't remember Gyro anymore. Gyro finds about Helper and
comes to get it, but it doesn't regonize him anymore. Gyro is really
heartbroken about this, but luckily everything ends up nice and Helper
gets home. And I really loved the Mickey in the broken toys box on page 8.
It just looks too cute on Donald's head.
Also I started to wonder why Scrooge's money didn't go straight to the
quicksand when they crashed down. That thin rock layer couldn't have
survived the impact those moneys gave.

When you paint a wall and it dries, then if you scratch or damage the wall
and mar the paint, does the paint reseal itself over the scratch and hide it
again? That would be some great paint!
But maybe you mean the escaping gas should seal the hole by solidifying as
it leaves the coins? Shall I invent a reason why it doesn't? Give me 1.37
seconds: A) There is a brief time limit in which the gas will do that,
otherwise it would be useless trying to remove the ship hulls from the
bubbles. B) The gas won't solidify if it's moving too fast, just as rushing
water won't freeze. C) The gas was faulty, exactly as Gyro says, that's why
he would not accept payment D) Etc., etc., etc.

My degree is in engineering, not chemistry. But I suspect that if you ever
actually try to invent the gas described in this story, you *might* be

This sounds to me like a tautology. (If it is rushing, it is water,
therefore it is not ice!) If it weren't, I could make a torus (a tube
whose ends are joined together) full of water, with some kind of a motor
in it to keep the water flowing round and round at a nice "rushing"
speed. I could then lower the temperature arbitrarily, and the water
inside the contraption would remain liquid. This somehow doesn't sound
right.
There is this notion of "supercooling", where a substance can remain
liquid at a temperature below its freezing point, but this can only
happen under special circumstances, one of which is that the liquid must
be perfectly still, not moving.

the "Don Rosa Duck Family Tree Section". And when
doing so I have included a "All appearances:" post
below the miniature scans.
However, due to my lack of ability to read and
transcript the Greek alphabet I haven't been able to
include such a post for the Greek version. I now hope
that any of my greek friends here can help me with
this.
I will also be happy to get other interesting info
about the greek version, the greek names or about
other publications than then one in Komix #100 in
oktober 1996.

Okay, confession time.
The virus sent to members of this list originated from one of the computers
I own. My son likes to view Japanese animation over the Internet, and
antivirus software slows down that process. He developed the very bad habit
of turning off the virus scanner while watching his movies, and he forgot to
turn it back on before reading his email. He also had a lapse of judgment
when it came to opening attachments, and infected the machine. It was about
5 minutes before I noticed the extreme network traffic from my location in
another room, so several of you received infected mail before I could run
into the office and switch off the system.
I'm rebuilding the machine now, as I never like results of just cleaning a
virus off a computer -- there are always vestigial remnants of such
infections. I hope no one opened the KLEZ worm that they received from my
home.
Thanks to Don for identifying me only as "a friend" when removing the blame
from himself, but it is only fair that I acknowledge my mistake. Meanwhile,
my son has learned a valuable object lesson at YOUR expense! Thanks for
contributing to his computer education.

No, and I usually don't even try to explain them. But this gas was such a
fascinating idea I started to think about it more.

It says: "When the gas touches ship's metal hull, it forms a solid film

Has the lightbulb always been a lightbulb? It certainly looks like that
nowadays, even though it's a bit pointy on the top, which at least my
ordinary lightbulbs aren't.
But in the old days, if I am remembering correctly, little helpers head
looked more like a hmm. an electrical component you used before you got
the transistor. I have no idea what the name for that is in english (tube,
perhaps?)
(elektronr?r in swedish, perhaps someone can help me?), i e not a lamp at
all, but some kind of semiconductor device (??) (I'm a physicist, not an
elictrician, so I don't know so much about these things) It looks like
lamp, but it's more cylindrical in the form, and has a pointy top. And
some stuff inside as well. Those things could be quite large, I think.
Or is it just an ordinary lamp little helper uses? Even back then?

It's called a vacuum tube (fairly generic name). It is indeed what we used
in electronics to rectify, amplify, etc, before inventing solid-state
diodes and transistors. It is not, however, a semiconductor: in it, current
flows through vacuum (hence the name), not through silicon. Its
construction is actually rather similar to that of a light bulb, and indeed
the first vacuum tube rectifier was invented as a modification of the light
bulb. (Credentials: I am an electronic engineer and I even teach young
people who want to become engineers, although I certainly don't teach them
about vacuum tubes ;-))
Apart from the electronics nitpickery, anyway, as far as I can tell the
little helper never had anything that fancy for a head, just an ordinary
light bulb.
