CHRISTOPHER (RE: April, May & June v. Webby):
I tend to agree with Christopher and others concerning the underdevelopment
of the triplet nieces. It is my understanding from some early "Ducktales"
prmothional material(?) that Webby was an outgrowth or the nieces concept
as well as an attempt to attract young female viewers to the program when it
aired. In many ways Webby is merely a reflection of the fact that the triplet
nieces were never truely defined as individuals (much as the Nephews were,
and I suppose, according to some, still are). I guess Mrs. Beakley's
intruduction was to necessitate a mother-matron role lacking in the Nephews'
sphere of influence, and became a convenient vehicle to introduce Webby
(especially with Daisy's presence so blatantly missing: no Daisy = no Nieces).
Though, time-wise, the "Flippism" story certainly marks the first appearance
of AM&J (Feb. 1953), another tale called "A Course in Confusion" from the
Dell Giant "Huey, Dewey & Louie, Back To School" #35 (1960) presumes to
introduce "April" (only) to the boys for the first time, which causes all
three
to drool for her. Perhaps this was the first attempt of any writer to actually
NAME them, or, as with Minnie's own nieces, there was an attempt to
present a totally new neice, but later writers (namely Barks) used the name
"April" as the launching pad for the rest of the nieces (namely May & June)
and the concept of a sole niece was forgetten? I know that in another story
from 1960 in "Donald Duck and His Nephews, Family Fun" #38 in the
tale "Clubhouse Crashers" the Nieces display their own passion for the boys
(which is apparently not shared). Most later stories seem to show the
Nephews and Nieces as having great contempt for eachother (a battle of the
sexes theme overused), except for the occassional Daisy/Donald tale which
gave us a tagline showing the "Men" and the "Ladies" ending the tale with
a happy note (usually a quadruple-date to the movies, park, or something
else rather pleasant).

that story, Donald kills a donkey, hits a lion, and several other
animals are injured. These scenes are shown in the French version but
were deleted in other versions, for example in a Dutch pocket book
(Donald Duck 33), where several panels were redrawn (by Franco
Lostaffa??). In the original version, the drawing printed near the title
shows Donald with a sporting gun, and it was also deleted in the Dutch
pocket. I think these changes were made for Italy (in "I Classici
Disney"??), but I'm not sure.

I got to meet Don and get an original drawing at a Comic
Convention in Indianapolis, here in Indiana, about a three hour drive

character, not just to collect an drawing and a signature for possible
furture resell from whatever artist was at the show.
So I then went about the rest of the show, to try and track down
a few items I wanted. About 15 minutes later my wife came up to me, and
informed me she had stayed and wheedled Don into promising he would try
to do a drawing for me if we were willing to come back right at 4:00
when he was due to leave for the day.
So we went shopping for the afternoon, returned at 4:00, and Don
presented me with an 8" x 11" ink, colored with pen on the spot, of
Scrooge cradling old number one dime in its glass case in his arms.
Beautiful, now framed in oak in a spot of honor above my computer work
area in my study, surrounded by framed samples of my favorite comics.
I shall never forget Don's willingness then to go the extra mile
for a real fan and lover of Scrooge and Duck comics, and Don's art.

I'm still confused. I called my comicshop tuesday afternoon, and they
told me, that they are still getting the Gladstone Comics (The shop
is: Faraos Cigarer in Copenhagen) and that Gladstone is in the last
issue of Previews, which was printet 3 or 4 days ago... Maybe there
still a hope!!

The other publications we have are all very old: "Topolino" 166 (1957)
and "Albi della Rosa" 370 (60s?) in Italy, and a Danish printing in 1960
(in Anders And & Co.).
