HIDDEN PHOOIES (Just-4-Fun):
While skimming through some of my older issues of WDC&S
I came across what may just be an official appearance of the
mysterious fourth nephew. In this short four-panel gag not only
does he make a solo appearance (sans his triplet brothers), but he
is actually called "Phooie" by his dognosed pal (this is surely one
possible interpretation of events). I think this should stand as, at
least, a "spurious" or "apocryphal" encounter with the mysterious
fourth nephew. Any of you who have an English version of the
comic available check it out. It is located in WDC&S #124 (Jan.
1951),which is actually a reprint from a Donald Duck newspaper
strip from 1946. ;-) I guess he's been around longer than we
thought.

we Europeans *can* find this first Phooey appearance, after all!

I probably won't have time to type in the solicitations in the new PREVIEWS for
Gladstone Comics coming in January until Friday morning or so, but I thought
two things might interest you all right off the bat:
* Everything is labelled "Not available outside the US or Canada."
* WHADALOTTAJARGON" (hope I got that right) sees print in January, as well as
Don's "An Eye For Detail."

Imagine my surprise as I'm reading through a rather dry text about American
Environmental History to find reference to "Tralla La!" OK, so the author
called it a Donald Duck comic, but other than that, it is interesting. He
disputes its oft-quoted analogy of Western Imperialism, saying instead that
it's backwards. His point is then lost on me, as his next couple of paragraphs
become bloated waste. It's something about intrinsic values of fur versus
intrinsic values of bottlecaps. Oh, wait, I get it. He says in the story
that $crooge's items of worthlessness (bottlecaps) disrupt the entire society,
while in historic example, the Europeans traded items of great value to the
Indians (weapons, clothes, utensils) for items of monetary value.
(BTW, the author cites an article in _Radical America_ by David Wagner in the
Jan/Feb 1973 issue entitled "An Interview with Donald Duck," if anyone is so
inclined to look it up.)
So here's my quick question for you all: Can any of you think of a good
example of an Uncle $crooge story which more closely resembles $crooge taking
advantage of nature in the same way the Europeans did upon first finding the
New World 500 years ago?

I'd like to locate the "Herbie the Love Bug" comic books. I just started=
looking and found that there may be two variations (probably many more):

with Scrooge encountering virgin soil with an eye toward exploiting it
to the hilt. (Inspecting the ground for traces of minerals, thinking
about what areas would be good for factories and housing projects, etc.)

That is probably the reference, however, the gag has no title, so
I assume that is a "descriptive" title? The actual "spurious" point
from the gag I am making reference to is when the Duck's movie
companion states, "Phooie, you've seen this before." and at the
end the Duck asks his Unca Donald if he may run down t'the
candy store. ;-)

Yes, that's what "O" means. As for the gag: drat, I never saw it... (all
the excellent Taliaferro strips that are **never** published, nor in
Europe nor in the US...).

Status Report on Don Rosa's Europe Tour

Many greetings from Don Rosa. I met him last Thursday in Karlsruhe. He still
seemed to be quite relaxed and enjoying the time with fellow Duck fans.
Although his time shedual is very tight, two Comic Stores per day, he tried to
make everybody happy. He even took the time to draw full-body Ducks for almost
everybody, except a few unlucky last persons :-( , who 'only' got some faces.
Because he already was working half an hour over his time.
Of course again there were also some persons who didn't really know Don, asking
him to draw a Mickey , a cat ('ugh I hate cats': Don Rosa'),or even the
Simpsons.
The most funny thing happened when Don Rosa had draw a Donald Duck for a women.
She wanted him to write: For my boyfriend... on his drawing because the picture
was for her friend. Don didn't feel to comfortable with the idea that he had to
write ' for MY boyfriend'. ;-)
At the end of the day Don had to give a Radio interview for a local Radio
Station!!
