>>>Erm... now I must admit I don't quite follow... if this issue was bought
by your sister in 1952, and now belongs to you, well... doesn't that make
it a *two*-owner copy???

Now PLEASE... I hope you'll grant that a comic book, picked out by a tiny
girl and bought by her mommy, would be just as much the "property" of the 6
month old member of the juvenile element of the same household! We shared
all the household comic books jointly. If you don't grant that, then I'll
tell you that... AHA! I now recall that the clerk at that Woolworth's gave
the comic to my mommy as a gift *just for ME*! They told that to me as they
gave it to me in my playpen that day in early 1952 -- I remember so vividly
because they had rudely interrupted a truly fine drool I had going while
pondering the significance of my big toe which I had discovered moments
earlier.

By the way, can anyone explain here on the ML how those members can post
messages in some other fashion than in the "MIME format", or otherwise
avoid having their messages followed by sections of computer-gibberish that
are 2 or 3 times longer than the message itself? I'd do so, but I'm too
ignorant to know how to explain it to anyone.

I don't have the answer to this question. Sorry. I *do*, however, wonder why you would need to know that. Yep, I'm sure Goofy *did* have an extraordinary sense of smell in some Mickey story back in the 60s. However, that was presumably just a plot device from the writer, trying to make a story work. Goofy has had *lots* of characteristics over the years, but always confined to the one story in which they were relevant to the plot.

It's the same thing with Super Goof. In some stories, Mickey Mouse didn't know his secret identity. In some stories, he did. It's all a matter of what worked best in that particular story. The only characters I've seen who keep knowing Goofy is Super Goof from story to story are Gilbert and Super Fink.

And I see you call Mickey Mouse "the most clever detective of Duckburg". He's not. While he *should* be pretty good at investigating stuff due to his natural curiosity, the characterization of him as a detective only brings back memories of the boring, bland and smug Mickey of the 60s and 70s. The "detective persona" is what for decades made millions of children dislike Mickey. At least, that's how it seems to me.

Certainly. It quite annoyed me that my first messages were plagued by
this html code.

I don't know what MIME stands for exactly, but it has to do with the possibility
of adding html things to your message-- font, italics, background, ...
Links work fine in non-MIME.

To post a non-MIME message, look in the "Format" menu of the message for
a choice between MIME and "Plain Text" (I don't know the exact name, my version
in in French). You can also select it for all your messages in the Options menu of
your e-mail software.

It has ever been told that Ferthry lives in a caravan, and that he often
comes to Duckburg, when he doesn't travel around the world... in "Happy
Birthday Mickey -50 ans d'histoire du Journal de Mickey" from 1984, but in
many stories from old Picsou Magasine, He works at a magasine's redction
owned by Scrooge, so we can imagine that he also has got a house in
Duckburg, or that when he is there, he lives at Donald's or at Abner's or
Dugan/Biquinho's Father's, or maybe Scrooge lend him a house...
Who told that Abner was Fethry's brother? Just DonRosa in his tree?
Does anyone could tell me more about Sgrizzo/Kildare? I only have one little
story from him. Is it said in a story that he is Donald's cousin? I saw him
in an Italian Duck Familytree published in PM 292, but there were no links
between the characters...

Speaking of the Kalevala story, I have mixed feelings about it: I found
it quite enjoyable, but I kept feeling that I wasn't "getting" all sorts
of things while reading it. Presumably, those things are what make it the
great story that people have talked about in this list. Unfortunately,
Finnish mythology is not part of my background. :( I wonder if non-Greeks
reading Barks' stories based on Greek mythology feel the same way.

There are no links, Sgrizzo was created by Romano Scarpa in 1964 (he had
no idea that in the meanwhile Kinney and Hubbard were creating Fethry, the
two are completely original characters) for the story "Sgrizzo il piu'
papero balzano del mondo" (That means "Sgrizzo, the oddest duck in the
world") on Topolino #465.
In that story Donald receives a letter from Sgrizzo (he recognizes it by
the messy way stamps are attached on it) and so he's forced to tell HDL
who this Sgrizzo is. He takes a photo album (that he kept hidden from
them) with "Odd relatives" and tells them that Sgrizzo is "a fourth cousin
of theirs". I'm not sure what Scarpa meant with that "fourth" I think its
the degree of relationship, but I'm not really sure.

Anyway, after that story the character adn't been used at all till 1988,
in Scarpa's "Paperolimpiadi". After that he became more and more used,
especially in fine stories written by Luca Boschi (who definitely loves
the character).

Hehe. I', sorry I was too general there I guess.

Okay, I do remember now.
Well, this shows what i was wanting to write in the last dcml, that the
dutch weekly, the editor or someone in power must hate Don Rosa or
hopefully (?!) just his comics so much that they
1. don't want the stories in the weekly (with exceptions like some h-coded
ones and now maybe the 3 cabelleroes)
2. Put covers on the DD Extras with Don's stories by another artist, even
though iut would be easy to get the original ones. Some of those covers
look horrid. others are just overdrawn from Rosa.
3. The translation of kalevala that you mentioned, Harry.
4. The family tree which was in a dutch album.
The only positive thing, I see, about the ducth Rosa-publication, are the
albums, which are something we don't have where I live. That they publish
a new album with Croesus is great.

Well, some of you surely now more about the dutch tradition and editors
than me. I just don't, as a Rosa-reader, understand why they if they hate
the stories and covers, just don't publish them instead of ruining them.
On the other hand, that would be sad for you, my dutch friends, and it
would be sad for me to as I wouldn't have the dutch Rosa-publication to
show of, as at least a bad example.

The Coin in dutch (This would stand as an example alone...)

It's not supposed to ryhme. It's supposed to be alliterated. But if
there's no meter, then it's not right, no matter what.

Have I missed something? When was it printed in English?

OLIVIER:

I think it's just supposed to be your generic young Aku Ankka reader.

The position they're in, however, is the typical position in which the
Kalevala runos were sung in the olden days.

I think he only means that he is the fourth considering Gus, Gladstone,
Clearwater... and himself, still ignoring that Fethry was just created And
gonna be published.
Scarpa did not count the other "older" Donald's cousins (the Dick Moore's
inventor one, the
Barks' cowboy, owner of a dude ranch and so on).

Indeed, Sgrizzo lives on the rocky hills far from Duckburg, even if in a
very, very , very bad recent story, he has a "normal" house in Duckburg, but
surely this "plot" was written by a guy who didn't read the previous
Sgrizzo's stories. It shouldn't be considered. Like, for instance, the
(in)famous stories where Grandma, Scrooge and Gideon are considered three
bros. (SHUDDER)!

Sgrizzo makes a living in different ways, selling bees' honey, as a deliver
boy, selling newspapers the ones of Gideon McDuck ones). In two stories
tries to work as reporter. He has a "moto" provided with a sidecar for
coming to the city.

In this version, Brazilian reprints are shown by default. Brazilian
character names aren't used since they are not yet in Inducks.

Oh, I hadn't thought of Clearwater, you must be right! What a nice hidden
reference to Barks this is!

I know. But the Dutch apparently decided that a poem *must* rhyme. So they
tried to make that, and didn't fully succeed (or: made a mess of it).

Er... well... no, it wasn't printed in English. I must have misremembered.

Certainly no one in my country hates Don Rosa personally.

> 1. don't want the stories in the weekly

The official reason is: the Dutch think that Don's stories are too complex
for the children they are aiming at in the weekly. That's why they put them
in DD Extra.
The fact that Roep does not like Rosa's art is only secundary.

That's a matter of taste. I haven't seen any "horrid" cover on a Dutch Rosa
issue. I *did* see some horrible covers drawn by Rosa himself, so I can
understand that the editors don't use them.

> I just don't, as a Rosa-reader, understand why they if they hate

They *love* Rosa's stories, so they are happy to use them. They just don't
seem to put much effort in good translations (or getting the right version,
for instance).

As an example of what? Anything wrong with the Dutch version of "The Coin"?

Greetings folks

After the last dazzling display of Disney
knowledge...thanks, everybody... I have an even
trickier enquiry.

I am attempting to identify the artist of a Duck
illustration owned by a friend. I don't have a
scanner, so I can't scan it in. It is quite old, and
features Donald trimming a garden hedge with a pair of
garden shears. He has accidentally cut the top off of
a Red Indian head-dress worn by one of the nephews,
all of whom are standing on the other side of the
hedge. Does this ring any bells with anybody?

Best Duck Wishes
