Hello everybody...

When I started planning an update of my websites, about one
year ago, I never imagined it would take me so long... and
I haven't even quite finished yet...

But there's enough material now to open "for business", so
here's...

http://eega.net/magic/pocket.html

Now organized as a "portal", so to speak, and collecting
together "The Last Balaboo", "Covers Extravaganza" and the
remains of the old "Magic Pocket"...

Ah, there's a little contest, too, just for fun of course...

Hope you'll enjoy :-)

Cheers

P.S. And there's also "From Cover To Cover", at

You're right. Some of those three-part adventures *were* exciting. But when
you look back on them, you often see that the only real *humor* comes from
Goofy doing silly stuff. Mickey himself, as a personality, tended to be
*boring* in those stories, something that would carry into other, shorter
Mouse material. Whenever somebody tried to do a one-part non-exotic detective
story, it often turned out unmemorable. And whenever somebody tried to do a
"gag" story with the Mouse, it would crash and burn! Yes, I'm aware there's a
nostalgic feeling in some quarters over these stories from simpler times -
but then some people think the '50s - as an era, not just as a source of
comic stories - were themselves really great!

As much as I enjoy several of the Paul Murry-drawn Mickey stories, overall
they give a hollow, one-dimensional, middle class WASPish 1950s-like view of
Mickey *himself* that might have been acceptable thirty years ago - but
shouldn't be today! (And I don't blame Murry for this. He has been known to
say that he didn't like Mickey's personality at that time, either.) Mickey
comes off as boring and bland - a characterization that was carried into
other producers' stories. Why do so many people tell me they *always* skip
the Mickey stories? Because those stories were *boring* for years! I've heard
that writers and editors used to *dread* having to write or edit yet another
5-page story where detective Mickey and his clumsy sidekick Goofy would solve
the mystery of who stole some rich woman's pearls.

Fortunately, some years back Egmont decided to infuse Mickey with most of his
original personality again. As a result the Mickey Mouse stories Egmont
produces these days are some of the best ever made, at least in my mind.
>>

I don't really think that's the problem. I've always thought Mickey's
"boring" personality was, in some ways, almost inherent in the
comedy/adventure genre. Most of the classic series in that genre, especially
the European ones, do indeed combine a somewhat bland (but clever) hero with
a big, strong (but rather dense) sidekick: Suske, Wiske and Lambiek, Tintin
and Captain Haddock, Pogo Possum and Albert Alligator, Rocky and Bullwinkle,
Asterix and Obelix, etc. Mickey isn't any more boring than Tintin or Rocky
the Flying Squirrel or Asterix the Gaul would be on his own...because their
essential function is as straight men to the foolish or clumsy or obsessive
types around them. The individual teams vary, of course (Captain Haddock
isn't stupid, but he IS hot-tempered, clumsy, and a borderline alcoholic),
but the characters fit together well, and the focus on a relatively
even-tempered, even bland, character like Mickey or Pogo helps to bring
sanity out of mystery and comic confusion.

All that said, I can't truly object to giving Mickey something of his
"original" personality...but a little of that goes a long way. I really don't
think today's audience would like to see Mickey squeezing a nursing sow like
a bagpipe or picking Minnie up by her underpants, though he did both in
"Steamboat Willie."

That's good. I don't think anyone does here either.
But some, who are in some books called Barksists don't
like his stories. I call myself a Barksist too, but a
Rosaist too...

I see.
Well, the danish weekly-readers are probably the same
age, they are said to love the stories.
The danish extra is reprints and a french
Mickey-story...

I see, but it's a fact anyway.

It sure is.

Well, I did see some I thought was horrid. We
discussed before that we can only tell or own opinion.

What i mean by horrid is overdrawn, and eg. the family
tree where Hortense was suddenly baking so you
couldn't see her, and Quackmore was reading the paper
Quagmire seemed to be a tractor! (Or was he in the
tractor). If they don't want the readers to see those
important persons on the tree, why publish it?

> I *did* see some horrible covers drawn by

Well, as my kind of fan of Rosa I wouldn't say I find
any of his covers horrid, only the overdrawn ones.
I do find eg. the cover for album 60 of the dutch
series of Scrooge albums confusing. The cover by Rosa
refers to another story than the one inside, a
Barks-story, and the map in the background confuses me
too.

I see.

In my opinion there is.
The poor way that someone took away the dollar signs
and replaced with the signs for guilders, so that the
color from the $-sign is still seen. That looks
strange.
Also they used the beautiful french coloring. BVut
what color does Scrooge's spats usually have in
Holland, what color is the hats of the Beagle Boys,
and Gladstones jacket?
How about the money in the bin, have they always been
silver and cobber-colored as Don would love them to
be? No they've always been gold, like here. I'm not
saying I want them to be, but I say that the tradtion
is so.
and maybe the tradition is not to print Rosa in the
weekly.
I hope to be able to show you a danish copy of the
Coin in same weeks, looking what i would call better
than the ducth one.

Hi!
I've heard about a Fred Duck in Rich Bellacera's pages... who is that? I have an Italian and a German family trees in PM 292, but I don't know a lot of characters, so I'm going to tell you Italian/German names, and please tell me the original names if you know...
I'm not sure about the spelling, as it's written little...
Please also tell if those characters have appeared in stories and how many, if yes...

Italians: Cirillo de'Paperoni, A... A... A... de'Paperoni, T... de'Paperoni, B... di Paperino (he looks like Grandpa in "No Hunting), N... de Paperino (I think it's Strobl's Grandpa Duck)

German: Without pictures: Golo Gans, Erwin Erpel, Eitel Erpel, Gilbert Gans, Gottwold Gans, David Duck, Duffelcoat Duck, Ducklas McDuck(1700), Sir Dusselrutz, Sir Donnarbold (1314),
With pictures: davidchen,Gipfel Duck, Wastel Duck (I think it's Abner?),Freddy Duck (I think it's Fethry, but with his old looking?), Willibald Wasserhumn (I think it's Cuthbert Coot), Jakob Jungerpel (I think it's Jake McDuck), Schwendolar Schwan, David Dief Helm Duck, Durian Duck,Detlef Duck, Alexander Duck, DonDugo.

Party at the Chemosphere: The Flying Saucer
House Soars Again

By FRANCES ANDERTON

The article is about the German publishers, Taschen's buying a Modern house
in California:

When this reporter visited the Taschens at their quiet, secluded aerie,
Angelika (pronounced on-GAY-leek-ah) Taschen, tall and sunny, chopped salad
at the new kitchen countertop with the poise of a dancer (which she was) and
the confidence of a doctor of art history (which she is). Her husband is
even taller, but less poised and so reserved at first that he barely looks
you in the eye.

But the reserve soon gives way to bawdy humor, shrewd observations, fond
clucking to the deer that wander near his home and a river of recollections.
He said he particularly regretted never having met Carl Barks, the creator
of Donald Duck, whose "Donald Duck universe" shaped his view of Los Angeles
when he first visited around 1980. "I always wanted to meet with him and
once wrote him a letter telling him how much I admired what he did and that
he was a great source of inspiration in my life," Mr. Taschen said. "The
same with Lautner."

FRANCESCO SPREAFICO to ANGELO TOTI, 19 March 2001:

At the moment I'm too much behind with both my email and my snail mail
to have time to pay attention to "new site" announcements like this, but
I just couldn't resist replying. I think you'll understand why when you
read my explanations below.

>> Lots of information and pictures!

> I'm a bit confused.. what's Frank Stajiano's page doing at the bottom
> of yours? A "copy&paste" in excess? :-)

I'm a bit confused, too. The link
"http://www.geocities.com/donald313us/barks.html" shows parts of the
opening page of my site, with as most important difference that Barks'
"Ode to the Disney Ducks" is missing one line.

Still, the page is credited to me by copying and pasting a part of my own
note, suggesting that *I* made that page (*including* the errors)!

On top, some links refer to my site, while others link to the site
itself in a misleading way. "Art" and "Bibliography" refer to a German
article on the site itself, which is credited to Gerd Syllwasschy.
("http://www.geocities.com/donald313us/barks2.html") I haven't compared
it with Gerd's site, but I guess that he has become "involved" in this
site in the same way as me.

Best wishes,

--- Daniel

(BTW. Both answers to my most recent little quote-quizes were right.
The quotes were indeed taken from the rip van winkle story of WDC 112,
and from "The Cattle King" of US 69.)

At first I wasn't sure who Clearwater was, but I thought about it, and could
you mean Abner "Whitewater" Duck from WDC #267? And, if so, has he appeared
anywhere outside of that one Barks story (and in Rosa's Family Tree as Fethry's
brother)?

Also, about Sgrizzo (Kildare Coot). Looking at the Duck Family Tree, it would
seem he could be on the same branch from which Gus Goose and Cuthbert Coot
derive. Perhaps Cuthbert is married and Kildare is his son? I don't have
WDC #55 so I don't know how likely that would be.

As for Fred Duck, for Gilles, I wish I had the actual issue readily available,
but as I recall he is from an issue of WDC during the 70s. Fred is a chubby
cousin of Donalds who wore a red turtleneck shirt and was known to be an
artist. That's all I can recall at this time. I should probably drop him
as a HOOZOO reference since he was only a oneshot (like dozens of other
relatives of Donald's) and doesn't have a place on the Family Tree.

I know Rosa would disagree, but of all the Duck relatives floating
around out
there, four that I think deserve a spot on the tree are Scrooge's
brother
Gideon, Aunt Eider, Uncle Rumpus McFowl and Donald's crazy cousin
Kildare Coot
(Sgrizzo). If I recall correctly, Kildare has a friend named Vincent
who is
NOT considered a member of the Duck Family, but he does appear often
when
Sgrizzo does. Aunt Eider might be a bit difficult to add since she
shares the
same name as an Uncle Eider on Rosa's Tree, but she has appeared in more
than
two stories, like Uncle Rumpus. With a Scottish sounding name, it would appear
that Rumpus comes from the McDuck side of the Family. Lastly, I still
don't
understand the need to remove Donald's Uncle Ludwig von Drake! In my ideal
Tree Ludwig would have to be in it! As does Daisy and her brother & sister!
We know Daisy has a brother and a sister (the brother being Huey, Dewey &
Louie's father and the sister being April, May & June's mother)! Another
relative that needs a home is Cousin "Sock" (Socrates Gosling)! He's Gus
Goose's cousin, so he must also be from the Goose/Coot branch somewhere.

Just some thoughts.

Yes, "Whitewater" not "clear". We were mistaken because its Italian name
is "Chiarafonte", that means "Clearspring"

I don't think so.
