Thanks to those who helped me!

In Barks' FIRESTONE X-MAS GIVEWAY 1945, We can see a female Duck who is said to be Huey, Dewey and Louie grandmother, but she doesn't look like Grandma Duck at all, and she doesn't live in a farm. Could she be Hortense Duck ( Donald's Mother), or Daisy's mother?
In WDCS 11, a very similar character appears in Daisy's house, so can this character be Daisy's mother, as DonRosa has Daisy's brother being HDL's father ?

One more goofy question: I remember that in a Goofy & Mickey
story from the mid 1950-ies, Goofy to the gentle surprise of
the reader mentions his own father. Goofy says that his father
bought the ownership to Brooklyn Bridge "fifty years ago".
This is the Norwegian version I remember.

(Later in the story it emerges that Goofy's father had been
conned. Someone had bought the bridge the day before Goofy's
father did it. Goofy then, 50 years later, buys the bridge
of this person.)

I wonder which story this is, i.e. what is the American original,
and does it really say these things about Goofy's father?
(As we know, most of Duckburg lives by an uncle-nephew
and aunt-niece system. So Goofy is different, after all.)

Hi!
In A Goofy Movie, Goofy's Father's and Grandfather's names are given: Walter P. Goofey and Benjamin Goofy.
I've a story, in JDM 803 ( I dunno the code..), where Badwolf Become Super Bad Wolf, and we see also in this story SuperGoof's conciousness, a little SuperGoof called Superconciousness....

0:27, and still here!

If Donald and the boys say so, then the lady in FG '45 certainly is
"Grandma". I don't know when Grandma Duck was created, but
it was obviously much later (how much?).
So this "Grandma" I would say is sort of a proto-Grandma Duck.
She was here to get the story started ("We'll all drive over to
Grandma's house!") and to wrap it up-- most joyfully (see her leap 'n' dance!).
As for her family ties... I would say she's just "Grandma"-- everybody's
"Grandma".

>>In WDCS 11, a very similar character appears in Daisy's house, so can
>>this character be Daisy's mother, as DonRosa has Daisy's brother being

Don't know it.
Anyway, remember these were the very early years of the comic books
and the Ducks. The authors just wrote in new characters as suited their
purpose for the story. Also, they were "just kid's stuff", presumed to be
thrown away-- even the original art was discarded. And *nobody* could have
imagined that more than fitfty years later, people would be seriously discussing
and analyzing these stories as we are.

This was the headline of a brief news article on the front page
of the Syracuse Post-Standard of Wednesday,Feb 28,2001.

Below is the entire text:

Europe is scheduled to switch to the euro Jan. 1,2002, with
the help of Scrooge McDuck. Disney's cartoon bazillionaire
is featured on "Uncle Scrooge" euro coins unveiled Tuesday
to be distributed in schools to promote the European Union's
single currency.

There was also a picture of the coin with a side profile of
Scrooge in top hat and writing all around the edge.

Anyone out there aware of this? Anyone seen them? Anyone
want a friend for life? I would trade or pay dearly for one of
these. Forgive me for using the DCML to ask for help.

I have the Italian version of the book, from June 2000.
Apart from the original 12 chapters, there are chapters 1bis, 3bis, 6bis
and 6ter, 8bis, 9bis, a family tree of the Duck family and a name index.

Every chapter has an introduction with references to Barks stories.
The book has been published by Disney Italia, ISBN 88-7309-762-6

to, or perhaps interested in, Super-Goof's identity?

In
S 70137 Somebody Stole My Peanuts
a villain named Fink is released from jail, and immediately goes to Goofy's
garden, being "one of the few people who know the secret of SG's goobers"
(as he himself says).

There's also a sequel:
S 72100 Return Of The Super Fink (art: Jack Bradbury)
At the beginning of the story, Fink escapes from jail, and immediately goes
to Goofy's garden, being "the only person in the world to know the secret of
SG's goobers" (as a caption says).
The villain's appearance is different from the one in S 70137; however, we
know that the artists working on S-coded stories didn't care too much about
continuity...

The Inducks list no Norwegian reprints for the 2 stories. "Return Of The
Super Fink" was however reprinted in Scandinavia in 1973, both in Denmark
(Gaveh?fte 23) and in Sweden (Kalle Anka Julkul 73).

Hope it helps,

This reminds of the ad that announced Mickey's arrival to Finland in 1930.
The day before Mickey strip started to appear here there was a short
introduction in the paper which said "This gentleman is Mickey. Straight
from the darkest Africa." This is understandable because the first story
was "Lost on a Desert Island" in which Mickey ends up in Africa and has
some trouble with a local tribe.

There are several stories where other people become "super" by eating the
goobers. Goofy's nephew Gilbert is the most used (I think). Others include
Madam Mim and Ellsworth...
If they use the goobers, I assume they also know about Super Goof's
identity.

*Much* later than 1945. Obviously. 1943... 8-)

She appeared for the first time in the Donald Duck newspaper daily from
September 27, 1943.

The FSG '45 appearance may be one of the first times she appeared in a comic
*book*. That may explain the difference in appearance - but I'm sure she was
meant to be *the* Grandma Duck.

> In WDCS [111], a very similar character appears in Daisy's house

This is Daisy's housekeeper. She has never been seen before or after that
story...
(Barks just needed someone to tell Donald where Daisy had gone.)

Hem. Yeah, well.
Thank you for the information, Harry.
I simply (OK, naively) thought it was later because of her appearance.
Any idea when she eventually got to look like the one we know?
Or was the '43 Grandma closer?

European newspapers had some more specific details about this
(not surprising) and named the country issuing the Scrooge Coin
to be Italy (even LESS surprising :-)

For people not living in the European Union, perhaps I should
put some background to it.

EU isn't like the USA, but a more loosely held federation of
independent countries. Many of it's members (not everyone)
will abandon their local currencies in 2002 and switch to
the Euro.

Each of the different countries are permitted to issue
different Euro bills (banknotes) and coins. The reverse
has a - for every country - common design, but the obverse
is free for every country state to put their own design
on it (for example, Denmark and Belgium would most likely
want to put their respective monarchs on the coin.)

According to this article, it's Italy that is about to Issue
the first official "real" Disney Money. In my local paper it
says that "the Italian president Umberto Virri and minister
of finance Vincenzo Visco presented this new coin in Rome
on the 27th of february." .. otherwise it's the same
article that was published i Syracuse Post-Standard (but
translated into Swedish of course).

It's illustrated by a picture (somewhat blurry) that is
said to depict Virri and Visco and in the background a
large projection of the coin, a picture of Scrooge and
the text "Zip Paperone".

The design looks familiar. I am not so good at identifyiong
artists, but perhaps som of our italian friends here on the
list have better information than my paper?

Interesting to note that Italy is the first (?) to issue
REAL Disney Currency. I seem to remember that San Marino
(a small self-gouverned city-state located inside Italy)
was the first to issue real Disney stamps.

Considering Italy's long history and tradition with Disney
comics - I am not at all surprised about them issuing these
coins.

I just wonder when Finland will do the same.. :-)

Of course the $crooge Euro is *not* legal money, only a collectible
coin.

Thanks for the clarification! I was a bit afraid of that.
Will it be legal tender in 2002 like other Euro-coins?

Hi I have looked in a few Super Goof comics and found that a number of
people have seen Goofy change to Super Goof or the other way around. But do
not know who Goofy is.

S.G no.57 (THE RAID ON FORT KNOTS)
An unnamed scientist watches goofy take a goober to become Super Goof.

(THE GIANT WINDOOLA JADE)
A talking parrot sees Super Goof become Goofy but again dose not know Goofy.

(THE GREAT BIG SUPER GOOBERS)
A Beagle Boy 671-176 follows Super Goof home and watches him become Goofy
and then take a goober to become Super Goof again.
Still again the Beagle Boy dose not know Goofy as he calls him a >ORDINARY
SLOB<.

I will keep looking for more for you.

Kenneth
