Right. Which story?

Re:WDC&S 271 (1963, Album 47)
Your note on the spring is highly interesting. I wondered what
the story's fate might be abroad and if editors might not just
decide to skip it.
Changing the art is another way. I think you change things a
bit like this for such purposes: if the pun doesn't work, drop it;
if the target language has a pun you can't help think of and
which is related to the story, add it; it'll make up for what humor
may have been lost elsewhere And if a minor alteration of the
art can help, I think it's OK: the story's point is that people scam
one another by playing on words, not that it is a *spring*. That's a
nice adaptation. Any information regarding other languages?

I have a little collection of panels that are quite a challenge to the
translator.
ex: "Return to Plain Awful", final panel: "they made it *square* !"
"Last Sled to Dawson", p 2 panel 7: "I guess I'm just another
sourdough who's *sour* on the Yukon and without enough
*dough* to go home!"

Remember "file 90L-6F" ?"

"Ninety feet from the left wall and six feet up from the floor!" I
certainly do: That's of course the place of Soapy Slick's receipt in
McDuck's Warehouse #1. The source is "North of the Yukon" from Uncle
Scrooge #59.

Hi to everyone!

I'm temporarily de-lurking just to ask: what happened to Baldo de' Paperi?

Maybe I missed something, but reading the kilometric enumerations of
Donald's relatives that many of you are sending to the List -and
which I found really very interesting, since I didn't know many of
them!- I didn't see at all Baldo de' Paperi, an nth nephew to
Scrooge.
Created by Scarpa in 1980, he appeared only once in "Zio Paperone e
il nipote ideale", in Topolino #1294. Nonetheless, I think he's a
consistent character, a juicy anticipation of the YUPPIES to come in
the eighties. At first, even Scrooge seems to think that this is his
"ideal nephew" and heir...
And then, since we already have in the duck family tree a Ye-Ye and a
sort of a Hippy, I think a Yuppy would only be appropriate! It's just
on seeing on WHICH branch of the tree Baldo could eventually be
hosted...

Best wishes

Thanks for the scans!
Indeed interesting experiment. Spiegel's and Murry's styles don't fit
together, that´s for sure. I think they should've come closer to each other:
bit more realistically drawn Mickey and Goofy and a bit more stylished
humans.
I just wonder the logic of Disney/Western editors. First they say to Barks
that he can´t use real humans and then it´s OK to do Mickey interacting with
extremelly realistic human characters.
In many newspaper strips, both with mice and ducks, you can find many human
characters (no black nose).
BTW: sometimes Beagle Boys have floppy dog's ears and sometimes normal human
ears. why´s that? I think Barks always drew them with normal ears.

I guess this is a question for Don but anyone can answer. Why was Scrooge
originally made up to be Scottish. Since their are so many places he can
come from, I was curious to why you picked that for him. I like that
heritage because I think that it fits all the stories the best and I was just
curious to know why you picked that for him. Thank you.

In the Brazilian translation, they (easily) changed the spring to a

in Portuguese the word "mangueira" means "mango tree" and also "hose". ;-)

I can't check all Barks stories, but picked up a few,
and in all four they do have *flappy dog's ears*:
- 1st appearance: WDC&S 134 (Nov 51, Album 19)
- 2nd appearance: WDC&S 135 (Dec 51, Album 20)
- "The Mysterious Stone Ray" (U$ 8, Dec 54)

Hi!
(I've goofed in my last message:
>Oscar is Goosetave's and Matilda's father...
I wanted to say SON, of course...
My Duck family tree is now FI-NI-SHED! (WORD version, with links between the
characters as for Pete's and Goofey/Mouse/Cow's, for those who have already
seen them...
I'm a little proud... All the Ducks relative are here!!! ( I haven't kept
the names I had invented, I just said "&" for male, and "?" for female...

I've been through my whole comics collection searching for relatives... I've
found a lot os infos...
In Super Picsou G?ant n 125 bis, S77142 "Donald et le cousin bavard", (The
Big Mouth, by Tony Strobl, as showed at the inducks -- Except that my
version has 9 pages and it is said to have 7 in the inducks, but It's the
same story, as the italian translated title is the same than in french)
We see Daisy's cousin Lapie. I wanted to know his english name... He looks a
lot like HDL, with a cap and the same type of Tshirt than Donald in Quack
Pack, that makes me think that the actual look of HDL comes from Daisy's
side of the Tree...
Also in JM 2357, in H951189, "Donald est classieux", we see in a frame, at
Daisy's, a female Duck: Aunt Azal?e... Does anybody know his english name?
If she has never been traduced, tell me the english for the flower "azal?e".
If you've gof info (names, or if the relation between the characters aren't
the same in english...) about the following characters, please let me
know...
Pluto's nephew in a comic from the 55's
Minnie's aunt (named Matilde in french), in JM 193
Goofy's uncle (Toc, in french) in JM 171
Gyro's great grandparents in a story without code in PM 62
Minnie's uncle in D94008 (in french, Briney)
Gyro's and Goofy's ancestors in D210201 ( Dinguidor and Bertrand in french)
I think the name of Goofy's cousin Noah from Bill Walsh in ZM 500226 is the
same than in french
Mickey's uncle in S75180 (L?o, in french)
Daisy's greatuncle Darius in D96055
Goofy's Aunt in WMM 143 ( Tante Hinette, in french)
Minnie's cousin in S79070 (Marie in french)
Minnie's uncle in WMMOS 313 (Marmaduke in french)
I also wanted to know more about those Goofy's relatives told about in
Rich's pages ( and if some of them are the same than those I told you
before...)
Goofy's nephews Marmaduke & Roderick, Goofy's niece DEbbie, Goofy's uncles
Ophal Dizzy Esq, Wombat, Joe, Howan Dawg, Angelo, Verner VonGoof, Goofy's
aunts Matilda, Goofilia, Goofy's Cousin Batts, , Cap'n Windjammer, Gen,
Goofy's Great Uncle Patten-Leather.
In JM is a section in english (Donald Speaks english). Now, drawings are
created especially for the section, but before, comic strip were took...
In JDM 2338's Donald's speaks english, there is a little hunter human Boy
called Li'l Davy who lives at Mickey's and is raised by him... Somebody know
who is it?

Just Western editors (my understanding is that Disney left them alone), but
you are talking about two different editors 20 years apart.

twas Carl Barks who made him Scottish, not Don Rosa.
and regrettably it's based on the old stereotype of the miserly scottsman.
but both Carl and Don rose well beyond the stereotype.

The story was originally 7 pages long, in 4-tier rows.
The Italian reformated the layout to 3-tier rows per
page, hence 2 pages more. And the French re-used the
Italian verion (most of the stories in "Super Picsou
G?ant" come from Italian "Super Almanacco Paperino").

I can't check the story right now, but "Aunt Eider" is
"Tante Azal?e Zoa" in France. They are probably
completely different characters though. I don't think
that Mau would make a reference to this oooolld
character from the "Studio" period.

>Does anybody know his english name?

These stories are made for Holland. There may be no
English name.

>Pluto's nephew in a comic from the 55's

Which?
Do you have Uncle Giddy (from a Mickey Suday Page),
one of Rich's favorite character?

>Gyro's great grandparents in a story without code in
>PM 62

They're all identified in Inducks so let me know
which:

PM 62b S 74254 15 US
Sombre histoire de miroirs [xapp:HDL,DD,GY,US]
PM 62g S 69020 10 HDL
Une dent contre le dentiste [desc-fr:Balade dans le
pass? parmi les indiens] [xapp:DD,GY,HDL]

I guess S 69020?

>Minnie's uncle in D94008 (in french, Briney)

According to the data I have this is an error by the
French translator. He really is Captain Churchmouse.

>Gyro's and Goofy's ancestors in D210201 ( Dinguidor
>and Bertrand in french)

What kind of code is that? It should be either
D+5digits (year and a number) or D 2000-3digits.

>Goofy's Aunt in WMM 143 ( Tante Hinette, in french)

Inducks says Aunt Hattie.

>In JDM 2338's Donald's speaks english, there is a

>who is it?

Mickey first met L'il Davy (P'tit David in France) in
the last Gottfredson serial in 1955 ending october
10th. The only publication in French I know is Mickey
Magazine (Belgium) 400 if you have it.
He reappeared then in the dailies many times. Many
strips from these period were published in the 10-15
last issues of Mickey Poche and a few recently in the
"Donald Speaks English" pages.
But he was also used in a few comic-books in the US,
and one of them was reprinted in France in issue 1755
of JM (I think) with Goofy, "Trick Or Treaty" in OS
1146.
About his exact origin in Gottfredson's story, I can't
say exactly. L'il Davy is a smart little scout boy who
is not used to civilisation but is for instance able
to speak to animals etc.
