Hi all,

Delurking after an interminably long time with all the
usual and a couple unusual reasons and hoping list
members I owe e-mails to will have a little bit more
patience with me!

Just wanted to repeat a couple thoughts I sent to
Gerry Tank last year to pass along to Carl when he was
ailing. It is truly thanks to Carl that I became an
insatiable reader, with an interest in geography, and
maps, and geneaology (my own attempts at eight years
old to list the Ducks pales against the efforts of
fellow list members). Other things may spark these
interests in others, but for me it was the tales of a
duck (in a sailor suit, but that never seemed to enter
the picture), his three clever nephews, and the
incredibly rich uncle who took them everywhere and did
everything. I had the great fortune to meet Carl
briefly twice, and he struck me as a fellow who would
always be a bit bemused that these "little stories" he
wrote and drew to earn a living could inspire such
devotion and memories in adults whom the rest of the
world would always assume should "grow up." Carl and,
by extension, everyone, who appeal to our sense of
wonder and enjoyment of the world which is just
waiting out there for us, prove that growing up does
not mean loosing imagination and wonder. It is a sad
comment that Carl's birthday went, to my knowledge,
unnoticed here.

I want to add my voice to the folks who can vouch for
the generosity and willingness to converse that an
encounter with Don brings. The last time I met Don
was last year when he appeared at the small (but
incredibly packed) Donald Duck Museum/Shop outside of
Strasburg, Pennsylvania. Fellow list members Gary
Pantzer and Archontis Pantsios had driven down from
New York (one of you wrote a huge write-up for the
list - Archontis I believe?) and my fiance Becky and I
drove up from the DC area. Don, you were, as ever,
friendly and incredibly obliging. You did a sketch
for us (Donald and Daisy - again obliging since I know
you don't normally do Daisy) which we intended for a
dear friend who enjoys Donald and Daisy. (By the way,
this friend was a reader at our wedding this past
Saturday and when we presented it to her she was
absolutely thrilled. Thank you again!) So, gentle
list members, although Don has already said it so well
for himself, I add for myself and Becky, don't let
anyone tell you that Don is anything less than a
gentleman!

Stepping down from the soapbox-
Take care everyone,
Chuck Munson

This sounds EXACTLY like the Don Rosa I have
had the fortune to meet in Sweden. I've seen
him here on a couple of conventions, and this
is the way Don was in Sweden ten years ago,
and every convention I've seen him since.

He usually took no breaks and even the hosts
were worried about him. It looked like he
tore himself out a bit, but it also looked
like he enjoyed it all immensely. And all
of this for a smile from a young comic-book-fan.

I am sure Don made a lot of Don Rosa fans in
the process! I know he made one in me. :-)

There are a lot of stories with Donald's, Scrooge's, Gyro's... ancestors,
taking place during Middle Ages, prehistory, ancient Greece and Roman
Empire, Ancient Egypt, Europe,... With each time the almost the same
relations or different relations between the character's ancestors...
It just shows how the Gyros, Ganders, VonDrakes, Ducks, McDucks, Coots,
Gooses... are linked since the beginning of the world... The Gyros are often
the McDucks's (McDucks' or McDuck's or McDucks's or
M's'c's'D's'u's'c's'k's?) and Ducks's employees as inventors and friends,
the McDucks are often related to the Ducks as uncles or employers, ...
To me, when such facts happen, it's because the characters they look like
are reincarnations of them, as for "Back to Long Ago"
So Scrooge isn't just Donald's Mother's Broter, but he is also around 73
times his cousin... those facts aren't so inconsistents, to me... It will
just be hard to find all Ducks relatives, but I'll do it!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

You know, the character Olivier told about who wanted to dig another Paname
canal, the character "Burt Naldo" Olivier saw in "I Disney Italiani" ,and
"Baldo de Paperi" Blasco told about-- They are the same!!
I've founded this MP 106 in my collection.
Here he is said to be Scrooge's Great grandnephew in law. I wanted to know
if he was so in the other versions ( I haven't understood Blasco's words
("nth nephew") when he spoke about the relations between Scrooge and him,
because I don't understand those technical words,or maybe he has goofed
wanting to say "other" or "nineth"... so could you tell more?...)

In which Barks's stories have Cuthbert and Whitewater been seen first?
If somebody had scans of them by Barks, they would be welcome! :-)

In I 2023, we can see a photograph with four characters: A woman who is said
to be Mickey's aunt Mickianne, and her three brothers.
The we understand that one of the brothers is Rattinger, a gangster.
Then, Mickey says: "Rattinger is probably one of my Grandma's brothers "
And eventually, Rattinger says that he is Mickey's great uncle...
I don't know if the translator goofed, and so that Mickianne is Mickey's
grandma, or if Mickianne were just his greataunt, his grandma's sister and
that the grandma wasn't on the photograph...
If somebody has got the story, help is welcome...

Last monday I made a mistake by sending a Dutch private email to this
mailing list instead of the friend to whom it was intended.

This email contained my opinion on Dan Shane's email of 24 March 2001,
which I found insulting. Even more because I myself have received some
condescending private emails from him in the last years, after I had
criticized Don Rosa on this mailing list.

So, I wanted to send a brief private message to a friend in which
I expressed my feelings, while deciding whether or not I wanted to say
something about it in public as well. Unfortunately, I pushed the wrong
button and as a result this private email appeared on the list.

Since this misdirected email has caused some confusion, I've decided
to do an attempt in translating its Dutch contents to English:

"Rosa virtually receives nothing else than praising on the DCML, but
as soon as there's one exception among it then Dan Shane thinks he
has to act as Rosa's bodyguard by talking to that person in a rude and
humiliating way. Bah! Childish!" (Obviously, I would have used different
wording when expressing this opinion in a public email.)

Then a copy followed of Dan Shane's email of 24 March 2001, containing
a comment on shift buttons and the request: "A friendly word to all
faithful list members. Please do not feed the trolls."

After (involuntary) sending this message to this list, I received a
private email from Don Rosa in which he showed me a translation, made
by one of Dan Shane's coworkers.

That translation also made clear that the message was not about Don
Rosa himself (neither about that meeting), but about Dan Shane's email.
So, I really don't see why Don Rosa finds it nescessary to send me a
private email in which he misinterprets me, including an attempt to
personally insult me and a suggestion about how to apologize to
Dan Shane. It's none of his business!

I've subscribed to this public mailing list to write about Disney comics
and artists with other people, but certainly not to receive condescending
private messages from Don Rosa and his friend Dan Shane, defending each
other. If they don't like my public contributions, they can say so in
public.

My apologies to the friend to whom I directed that Dutch private email.
Also my apologies to this list for receiving a message which most people
couldn't read, especially to Dan Shane because he had to make an effort
in translating a foreign message containing his name.

Best wishes,

--- Daniel

Hello everyone!

Gilles:
>>In which Barks's stories have Cuthbert and Whitewater been seen first?

1/ Cuthbert Coot
WDC&S 55 (April '45) ("Donald Learns the Ropes", Album 5)
p 2 panel 3: "Only ten more miles to cousin Cuthbert Coot's cattle Ranch,
where I'll *show* you how much I know!"
p 2 panel 4: enter Cuthbert

2/ Whitewater Duck
WDC&S 267 (Dec '62) ("Log Jockey", Album 46)
p 1 panel 1: "I read in our album that we have a distant cousin named
Whitewater Duck living in this forest!"
p 1 panel 5: enter Whitewater

>>If somebody had scans of them by Barks, they would be welcome! :-)
Can't scan them right now, sorry. Will scans the characters we've discussed
when possible.

>>(2nd message)
>>If someone has scans of Barks's Rockerduck, they are welcome too!
You'll find one in M&D, in the "Barks' Creations Timeline" section (Scrooge icon
in "Characters" in the Contents frame)-- from the second panel he appears in
(p 1 panel 2) (WDC&S 255, Dec '61, "Boat Buster", Album 44)

Sorry for answering only now, Timo.

>>Checking quickly couple of stories.. US 28 shows them with human ears.
>>But I was quite fascinated about US 7, where Barks seemed to be little bit
>>confused, whether to draw them with dog ears or just regular human ears..
>>Look for example page 13 panel 3 where one of them has floppy ears while
>>others have more or less human ears.. strange.
Right. Odd.

Regarding the Beagle Boys, as I was reading "Only a Poor Old Man" last night,
one thing suddenly struck me: their names.
They always called each other by their number.
I know, that's not a discovery.
But it suddenly occured to me: why *would* they call themselves in such away?

1/ They do have a name: Beagle.

2/ We know their grandfather's first name: Blackheart.
Or is it rather a nickname? Sounds more like it.

3/ They surely must have first names, but perhaps got to calling each other
by their number because dishonesty runs in the family and they all go to prison:
a/ the number becomes a natural nickname
b/ or rather (that's what I think) it is a proud proof of their being true
Beagles,
who live on that side of the law; the first stretch in jail would then
be sort of
a coming-of-age ritual
c/ or maybe they were sent to jail so early in their lives and heard
themselves
called that way so often (that is, always) it seemed like their numbers
were
their natural / true names

4/ Or might they have been given numbers for names from the start?

5/ We don't a have a clue as regards their mother either.
Could they have been born in prison? I wonder if that was possible at the time.
The only reference to a female Beagle character I know of is in L&T chapter 10 ("The invader
of
Fort Duckburg"), p 7 panel 7:
"Ma-- if'na *posse* comes by, tell 'em you don't know nuthin' about no missing
*cattle herd*!"
"You think they'll *believe* me?"

6/ What do the "Mrs Beagle Boy"s do?
a/ stay at home (as in the example above)?
b/ have a gang of their own ("The Beagle Girls")? : )

6/ Dishonesty and robbery is the family's way of life.
Can you imagine the possibility of there being a Li'l Bad Wolf kind of Beagle Boy that's
honest?

On Mar 28 Daniel explained that after his friend had, what was
in his opinion, a bad experience with and artist he was chastised
on this email group Someone had to wait in line over an hour for an
autograph, and then was refused one a specific books.

Part of his retort is below:

>"Rosa virtually receives nothing else than praising on the DCML, but
>as soon as there's one exception among it then Dan Shane thinks he
>has to act as Rosa's bodyguard by talking to that person in a rude and
>humiliating way. Bah! Childish!" (Obviously, I would have used different
>wording when expressing this opinion in a public email.)

Look - anyone looking for autographs pays their money and takes their
chances. Okay - you want to gripe you did not get what you want, okay.
I think all DCML readers should just be aware you are venting and be adult
enough to let it go. Lots of venting goes on here - I suggest we not take
any of
it too seriously. You can't make all autograph seekers happy all the time.
And it is the artist's prerogative on whether they choose to sign or not.

If you will allow me the indulgence of an off-topic artist, I had an
experience with
George Perez that he refused to sign on comic. The guidebook clearly stated
that he was the artist on the book, but George insists he wasn't. What am
I going
to do? Argue with him? He signed other books, and I let that one go
unsigned.
George is a very nice gentleman, and pleasant to all; plus his wife makes
all his shirts!

Hi!
In the french version of Barks' WUS 27, the director of the diamonds mine is called directeur Ecoutum, that is to say director Coot. I wanted to know his exact original name, for me to know if I can put him in my tree...
In the original version of Don Rosa's D94121, what are the differences between Huey, Dewey and Louie?
Are the characters in Barks's tree in CBL drawn? I'm curious to see what they look like...

U$ 27, p 7 panel 8: "Greetings, manager Coot!"
But since his beak is parrot-like, I'd rather say it's just a case of two persons having the same
name without
being parents at all. Members of a family (in the comics) share physical traits. This Coot doens't
look like the Coots

I think it's only a sketch with names. In fact, I'm almsot sure to have seen it somewhere, but can't
seem to recall where.

Hi all,

Harry caught me in a grammatical misstep. I wrote:

"It is a sad comment that Carl's birthday went, to my
knowledge, unnoticed here."

"Here" definitely did *not* mean the DCML! "Here"
meant the USA, especially regarding the "main-stream"
media. I was not thinking of the "virtual here" but
rather the "real world here". Is that
understandable???

Lacking a sense of place at the moment,
Chuck Munson
