Wrong!

1) Gus Goose is NOT Grandma Duck's nephew,
he is her *Grand-nephew*!

2) Grandma Duck has NO sister!

3) Gus Goose's mother, Fanny Coot, is the
daughter of Grandma Duck's brother Casey Coot!

How? Diamond Dick had to marry someone alive
at the same time as himself - not long gone
McDuck ancestors.

Ah, good point, David. I am tempted here to quote the great 19th Century poet and pigologist Sir Swinely P. Mudpuddle: "O, but to truly
know a pig! A pig, a pig, a pig. It is in all things man finds pigs, even the lowliest of dogs. O, Snort! And hie unto far hills, thou porcine
tubbishness!" Now, you may wonder what this has to do with anything, and rightly so, as it, in fact, has nothing to do with anything. But, if
I happen to stumble upon a meaning for this delivery, you shall be the first to hear of it.

Hi all!

For the record:

The vegetable that my father served during
ACs first dinner during his visit here, is
called "K?lrabi" or "K?lrot" in Norwegian.
I believe it's caled "Kohlrabi" or "Swedes"
in English!

It's size is about the same as a normal
cabbage. Inside it is yellowish. It contains
a lot of vitamine C and is called "Nordens
appelsin" = "The orange of the north".

Is he really her nephew, grand- or whatever? Is there any Barks-story
where this is mentioned?

> 2) Grandma Duck has NO sister!

I believe she has. I think she has the character of a woman who had some
older brothers and a younger sister.

Could be. But again: Where is the proof?

Yes, as valid as the tree I could invent myself. For example - for me -
Grandma Duck will always be Donald's mother.

not long gone McDuck ancestors.

O.K. Make that "distant relative", separated by some branches of the
ancestral tree.

There is a town named "Kohlrabi" in California:

http://www.kohlrabi.us

Excerpt from town history:

"In 1884 my great great grandfather, Ivan Nabokov, came to the Santa
Teresa Valley and built the first log cabin on Orcutt Ridge, in the
shadow of the great granite bluff called "The Nose". The next year Ivan
planted a seven acres of his family's favorite vegetable, kohlrabi, and
the rest, as they say, is history."

"By 1923 our little town had named itself after this noble vegetable and
the first annual Kohlrabi Days festival was celebrated. Nabokov's Nose
Kohlrabi had become a institution in the world of fine California
produce! When people hear the name Nabokov, they think of kohlrabi!"

BTW: Could Bombi the zombi have sex? Would the children be half-undead?

Oaaaaaa! Gah, ok, so now I'm having nightmares.
(acutally, Zombie Bombie is really horrendous. Had I been younger, I would
have nightmares. As it is now, I just get shivers, but that means that it
really is a great character. And the one who sent him out, him I was
afraid of when I was younger. (which means that I did read about ZB when I
was young, which is the reason to why I'm so afraid of him still, I just
realized... )

Btw, do we have to be so specific about the sexual behaviour of the
inhabitants in duckburg? It's not that I'm a moralist, it's just that...
well, it's like with your parents. You don't want to know.

So!!! I had forgotten that we are all descendents of green algae. And thus, we
are distant cousins of Kohlrabi, parsnips and rutabagas! I wonder if I'm
closer to a Kohlrabi on my mother's or father's side of my family???

For Olivier: When Walt Kelly worked as an in-betweener at the Disney studios,
Carl Barks had already transferred to the Story Department. They would have
had little, contact. But, I worked at Hanna Barbera, Turner Feature Animation
and Warner brothers Feature Animation, and saw that although most people had
friends for the most part in their departments, there were exceptions. They
certainly had access to most of the people in the Studio. So, it is POSSIBLE
that Barks heard Walt Kelly make up that name. But, somehow, I doubt it. I
think it is much more likely that Barks came up with that idea, as a parody of
that very common use of name and character rhyming that was omnipresent in the
1920s,1930s and 1940s (like "Slewfoot Sue from Kalamazoo"-I made that one up
now. It was probably said by someone, exactly as is, in that area -thought of
independently. Kelly could well have come up with the same idea independently,
just as two Rappers might come up with the same rhyme, as some words are more
suited to rhyming with others. As far as I remember, Barks came up with almost
all of his references on his own. I asked him (in th 1960s) if any of his songs
and book titles, character names came from real sources, and he told me that as
far as he remembered, he made them up. He said that he was making fun of those
things that were popular at the time (although I think that once in a while his
parodies better fit things that were popular years before-or a few, even from
times during his youth). He was a bit old fashioned, even though his humour
also kept up with the times (funny in any era).

Rob, our genealogical connection to Kohlrabi should be shorter along the
female lines because statistically females have always reproduced
younger than males. In addition the female form closer resembles the
Kohlrabi than the male form. But this might be coincidence.

Donald is shown in a 30's publication called Walt Disney's Family Album. He is pictured holding his baby picture showing him hatching from an egg. Also we find him in Marcia Blitz's book Donald Duck (1979) pictured in "The Big Bang Theory".He is shown bursting forth fully grown from his egg and ready to take on the world.

Best wishes...Dennis

Theresa: Sorry about your zombi nightmares. If this is any I comfort I
can assure you that Bombi is a nice zombi who would never force anyone
to do anything against their will (except killing them by poisoned
puppets, that is). I also think that Bombi is one of the great tragic
figures, along with the Hunchback of Notre-Dame, King Kong and Hamlet.
And I share your problems with explizit descriptions of interspecies
sexuality in Duckburg. But for the progress of science and enlightenment
I believe this is necessary.

Aha! A third theory then...

The female ducks having pregnancy as mamals,
but gives birth to large eggs right before
the hatching.

I don't think so, remember that Don Rosa's
"Donald Duck Family Tree" is accepted by
Egmont/Byron Erickson as official...
And even more - it is based upon Bark's
own tree...

> For example - for me - Grandma Duck

Even though he *always* refer to her as grandma?

Sigvald :-)
Cord Wiljes
Sigvald: For me, Grandma Duck is HD&L's grandmother, so Donald also
calls her "Grandma", even though she is his own mother. This is quite
common in our universe, too. If my own grandmother talks to me about
"grandmother" she means my mother's grandmother, her mother, my
grand-grandmother :-) Grandma Duck and Scrooge belong to the same
generation. In the "official" tree she is a whole generation older. I
dont't think so. For me Scrooge and Grandma are brother and sister,
Donald is Grandma's son and raising her grandchildren. Views rooted as
deeply in my own childhood as these could probably never be unrooted
anyway.

Oh, yes, I agree!! It's the same silly scaredness I had of mummies when I
was little (also from Donald Duck actually), but they are seldom very evil
towards you (good thing the film The Mummy is pretty new...). It's the way
of showing up, silently, without warning, and then just staring with empty
eyes, that is so creepy... wow (and here's the thing - I love it! WHen I
was little I couldn't stop reading books about ghosts, see scary movies
and so on, but it certainly gives its intended effect... )

But wasn't it just recently (by Don Rosa) that ZB was a bit more explained
as a tragic figure to feel sorry for?

I own a small book called "Donald Duck macht sein Gl?ck" which describes
Donald Duck's biography in a prose text with a few pictures. It is a
childrens' book, published in 1976 and is a (free) translation from the
French. This story is (C) Disney 1966:

Donald is too lazy to hatch from his egg, so his mother leaves the egg
alone and disappears. He hatches 3 weeks too late as he begins to
suffocate. Strangely enough he is born with childrens' clothes, knows
his name and immediately goes to town to earn money. Instead he is
caught by the police and sent to the orphans' home. He flees, is caught
and flees again when he should go to school. He takes a series of jobs
but is always fired because of his short temper. Until in one of his
jobs by chance he gets to dance in the theatre - and is successful. He
also learns to become an actor and a singer. He gets a letter from the
world-famous Mickey Mouse, asking him to come to America (!) to join his
movie cast. Hollywood fame and money follow. After a while Donald's
short temper returns and he falls back into poverty. He decides to start
a circus together with Mickey. This is when his family appears: Grandma
Duck, Scrooge (who is described as "rich but lazy"), Scrooge's wife (!)
Gitta, HD&L and Donald's "distant cousin" Daisy (they immediately get
engaged) to help him with the circus. The circus is a sucesss - Happy
End :-)

To sum up the most surprising infos:

- Donald's mother left him to die because he was too lazy to hatch from
his egg
- Donald is not born in America
- Donald is immediately conscious after hatching from his egg and can
care for himself
- Mickey lives in the same universe as Donald
- Scrooge is married to Gitta Gans (=Brigitta MacBridge)
- Daisy is Donald's (distant) cousin
