I'll keep this off-topic stuff short. David Fenske pretty much summed it
up. Canadians certainly would not deem the term "American" when referring
to citizens of the U.S. to be arrogant in any way. I'm pretty sure a lot
of Canadians would get offended to be referred to as Americans!

anything for a while, but I have to admit that I haven`t been

If I'm not mistaken, the US constitution begins with "We, the people of
the United States", so I suspect that "people of the United States" *is*
the name of the people inhabiting that great country.
