Since Boom! does not seem interested in publishing anything much more that Italian Disney stories, I would love for Boom! to give (or have taken from them) the license to publish Barks, Rosa, Van Horn, and other more traditional (new to North America) 4 panel duck stories.
If Boom! has no interest in publishing a Carl Barks Library, why not let someone else do so?
From the start it seemed Boom! was planning on printing very few Barks, Rosa, Van Horn, other 4 panel stories. With the cancellation of the hardcover "classics" collections, it seems Boom! is planning on printing possibly *none* of these types of stories! :(
As long as Boom! continues with what they are printing, I have no interest in them. If others like the stories Boom! has been publishing, I am very happy for them. However, to me I would not be the slightest bit upset if Boom! lost or gave up the Disney license. For all intents and purposes, *no one* is publishing the types of stories that Gladstone, Disney, and Gemstone published for the past 25 years or so. So if Boom! quit publishing Disney comics, it is not like I really would be losing anything...

I could be wrong, but I suspect that the reason Fantagraphics can do this is because it's only comic *strips* they're reprinting. I imagine that books would be a whole 'nother ballgame.

I agree that Fantagraphics likely does not have the rights and/or interest in publishing comic *books*. That doesn't mean though that another publisher wouldn't have an interest in publishing libraries of Disney comic *books*.
I would be really curious if Boom! would be willing to give up the rights to *classic* Disney comic books. If not, they are pretty petty in my mind. This sounds awesome and that they want to print the strips in their original, uncensored form is great. Can't wait for this.

I am very pleased about this news!!! I would absolutely love a Carl Barks collection by Fantagraphics as well. If not them, then hopefully somebody will publish these works for a new generation. I do believe there is a market for such a collection...Though I am mainly a "Duck" collector, I will pick up the Mickey Mouse Collection as a show of support.

Dang, I was really hoping to get a message out to you all about this before the news hit the blogosphere, but San Diego Comic Con apparently makes you fall right asleep when you get back to the hotel!
Obviously, we're thrilled about the Fantagraphics partnership and happy that we'll finally have a definitive English-language edition for all of you who have been asking about it for years. We wanted to make sure that our best strip cartoonist got the most lavish treatment possible so we went to the best in the business. From what Gary has explained to me, these books are going to be jaw-droppingly beautiful.
Also, I want it to be very clear that this in no way reflects any lack of interest or respect in the material from Boom. We license out different comics projects to different publishers all over the world all the time and Boom has a very specific pub plan and specific publishing rights. Boom has enormous respect for our classic material, and you've seen some of that come through in their recent hardcover reprint books as well as the well-curated back-up stories in the monthly comics. Not to mention their definitive edition of "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" which we also consider to be classic.
Anyway, keep your eyes peeled for more "official" marketing news on the Gottfredson collection soon!

I will buy the Gottfredson Collection, as well as an English one for Carl Barks, as well as for Taliaferro's Donald Duck, or a collection of ALL Taliaferro's Disney strips (Silly Symphonies added).
Fantagraphics does a great ob on their collections. I just hope that, in the interest of historical context, the strips can be printed in their entirety, in their original printed form, with no censorship.

This is excellent news! Fantagraphics' presentation of 'Peanuts' is bar-none the finest archival treatment that any comic strip has ever gotten.
Period.
