I know what you mean. It's actually pretty mystifying to me why he's so popular.
For me at least, he doesn't draw that well, his poses and facial expression can be pretty lackluster, and the stories he's assigned to draw have Scooby Doo levels of predictability. I mean I guess it's alright when you're a kid, but I can't remember ever liking these stories when I was one, not with Donald stories being much better. The characterization is what I would call an example of how NOT to do Mickey Mouse.
Oh, and: the villain is always and without exception Pete and the henchman with the long snout. And you know it's them from the very first moment you see them in disguise because they're the only characters in the world with that body shape. Which is pretty hilarious, if it were ever addressed in the story.
So, why is it so many people love Murry stories? I'd like to know this.
Also, there's one artist working for Western around 1950, doing these really funny Mickey Mouse stories that hold up pretty well, but I really can't remember who it is. Is it Dick Moores? Fallberg? Bradbury?

The storywriting was good in the 3 episode long adventure stories in The consecutive Walt Disney's Comics and Stories monthlies during the '50s. Murry's artwork then was better than it was in the 1960s. I didn't like his artwork even in those stories from 1954 on. But the stories were very good.

Ain't THAT the truth. I actually think his art, at least from the period when he was actually TRYING, was okay; the problem is...everything else. Re the characterization, note also how often Mickey doesn't actually DO much of anything; events (such as they are) just unfold around him any then helpfully resolve themselves with minimal input from the putative lead.

Didn't see this bit. You might be thinking of Bill Wright, who in addition to his work with Gottfredson did some surprisingly decent stories for Western's MM one-shots. Some of them were reprinted by Gladstone and Gemstone and one by Boom, even.
