This is splendid news!
Fantagraphics' Peanuts anthology is beautiful, and I have been eagerly waiting for their Pogo anthology since it was announced a couple of years ago.
Douglas Wolk seems rather confident to be able to get to publish the whole unadulterated works; as has been said countless times, the "issue" is no different than for the cartoon shorts, which they did eventually all release in their complete form, with introductions by Leonard Maltin; a few fords, a disclaimer, an explanation will suffice-- and then the strips will speak for themselves: whatever the stereotype, it is never used in a heinous way.

*If* Disney will let them publish the censored strips I see no reason to publish JUST the Gottfedson's. Why not a COMPLETE Mickey Mouse, year by year? I can't understand why I'm the only one complaining about it in all places where I see this discussion going.

You're probably the only one complaining because you're the only one who's quite sure what you're talking about. This IS a complete MM. I mean, I assume if there are any odd strips by someone else while Gottfredson was sick or on vacation or something, they'll be published too in due course, but basically, he was THE guy, from 1930 to 1975.

Yes, -Why not Complete Mickey Mouse? Both daily strip and Sunday strip (which Manny Gonzales took over, but did a great job. But, as chief editor of Disney's Comic Strip department, Gottfredson was involved in the whole strip from when he took over from Ub Iwerks in 1930 through 1975, in any case.
I just hope that the strips can ALL be printed in their original form (and not suffer from later years' censorship). We KNOW that the USA was a biggoted country in the 1930s and 1940s. And we expected them to portray their enemies in war in a bad light. It still is a biggoted country (albeit to a lesser extent). But we should be able to see history as it occurred.

Oh, okay, fair enough, but I think it's pretty apparent why they're not (how long did the strip continue post-Gottfredson?). Personally, I'm not even terribly interested in even the twenty-five years (!) of Gottfredson stuff after the strip went to all-gag format. That plus even MORE? Seems like a pretty hard sell. In any case, even if they DID continue it post-Gottfredson, they won't get that far for, what, more than ten years even if they consistently release two volumes a year. So it's not like we'd be seeing this stuff anytime in the remotely near future anyway.

What I really like to see is the publication of ALL the Mickey strips, until the late '90s, including the Sundays with colors restored to the original newspaper's palette. Until now it seems they will just import the Italian collection and publish it in black and white.

I repeat: who did the MM daily post-Gottfredson, how long did it run, and why specifically should anyone care? To me, this sound an awful lot like someone reacting to the news of a new Carl Barks Library by going "Grrr! Why doesn't it ALSO include the complete works of Vic Lockman?!? This sucks!"

Many people did the strips after Gottfredson. Including Floyd Norman who was able to retake the adventure-style. It run, at least, until 1995. I don't care if people think the post-Gottfredson strips were not as good or impossible to be as lucrative. It's up to Fantagraphics and Disney to sell it's products. I just said that I prefer if it was a "Complete Mickey Mouse".

I also would like to see the entire run of the strip but can understand from a marketing point why it is a Floyd Gottfredson library. After all, that's what we've been begging for the past 20 years or so. Maybe Boom could devote a few pages in the monthly to strip reprints and publish the rest of the run in order?

Well, it does seem to me that IF they get through the entire Gottfredson run--about which I am frankly extremely skeptical; I feel like they're probably going to bog down when the adventures end--then it seems like they might well have the momentum to just keep on keeping on through the whole series. Of course, we're talking about something that wouldn't become an issue in any case for twelve or thirteen years, so it's kind of a moot point right now.

I am really looking forward to this Gottfredson edition and I hope they´ll publish ALL Gottfredson material! But what really is a pity, they intend to print in black and white!
Why do they do this? All luxury and gorgeous books were in color, e.g.
the recent italian edition "Gli anni d´oro topolino" or the older "Mickey Mouse in Color" ...
Even the Carl Barks Library, at first published in black/white later came out in color.
Please think about it and make it right! Wouldn´t it be possible to use the
master copy of the italian "Gli anni..."?
