Hello folks
I think I may have caused confusion with my Super Duck enquiry: is there a
Disney character called Super Duck in Italian comics? Because the Super Duck I
was referring to was in fact an American comics character published in the late
forties and which ultimately became part of the Archie line. Sorry for any
confusion!

I know! I read Greek, and even occasionally understand it. The word I would
have used, if I had thought it was commonly known, is "ephemeral". Something
which comes and then passes again. This describes the temporary nature of
a comic book, whereas a 'periodical' indeed suggests something which repeats
over and over and over...
December 5.th is a periodical occurrence, but yesterday will never be back.

Ken Hultgren is indeed the artist of Super Duck for a couple of years in
the late 1950s! (I've also seen him doing realistic animal drawings in
various text peices in Archie comics.). He was replaced on SuperDuck by Joe
(Little Jinx) Edwards.

him were drawn by Al Fagaly, but I never seen them.
Let me see... NOT Walt Kelly, who drew covers also later, or Al Taliaferro,
who did the same. And NOT Vive Risto (who drew some Bucky Bugs in that
period, but NOT comic strips). Maybe Ken Hultgren, who drew Nambi's, Mickey's
and other's stories, and later drew some comic strips?

Perhaps it was improper for me to say that Don Rosa has not quite met to
the standards set by Barks. Rosa's earlier stories were near the
standards set by the best Barks stories. In recent years he has embarked
in a different direction-injecting more research and detail than I'm sure
Barks was able to do because he was so overworked. I didn't mean to say
that Rosa was not quite up to par, but it seems that's just what I said.
My apologies.
While I'm typing, someone on the list recently said that they agreed that
Barks only did 50 or so outstanding stories. It's been a while since
we've had new comics here and even then there wasn't a wealth of many of
the artists spoken of here. But I would say that there are well over 50
outstanding stories that Barks has done. Nearly *every* DDOS story was
brilliant, as was the US stories for the first 25 issues or so, and the
WDC&S stories from around 85-200 were all excellent. Not to mention the
gems that have been scattered throughout the remaining issues. To say
that there are only 50 outstanding Barks stories seems like blasphemy to
me, because I can personally say that without Carl Barks I would never
have continued to read Disney comics. Without Barks, and to a large
degree Gottfredson, I think *none* of us would be reading Disney comics.
After all, who would've inspired the current crop of writers and artists
to write Disney books in the first place?

It seems to have been a too hard job for the danish translator, and the

editor used the usual font for the whole story. That is sad. But maybe

Scrooge talks like Vainamoinen, to translate it into dansih, from
swedish,
using kalevaian rhytm. it wouldn't be that difficult with the first
panel, but
then there are several panels that has to be in the rhytm...
All in all the danish translator didn't do what the others did, and
what I hope
the translators in the future will do. Oh, gosh... what if they get the
photostats
from the danish translation?? That shouldn't happen...

write to be continued, if that's what you meant?

well, the thing that is wrong with the translation is the non-appearing
rune-o-meter and kalevala-font.
The danish translations are usually very funny, and quite catchy to the
danish humour as Don's orioginals are to the american (the good kind of
american humour if so).
maybe you should learn scandinavian so you will be able to read the
stories in swedish, norwegian or maybe finnish.

Glad you noticed! Yes, that was the idea... one characteristic of good
rune-whatever-meter is the "parallelism", which is when you say the same
thing several times in different ways. This feature can rarely be used to
perfection in a comics dialog where space is limited and needed to keep the
plot moving, but I like to at least be aware of it. I'm not going to claim
that the next-issue lines are examples of perfect parallelism, either... I
used the same words, but did change the order. Also, the lines are a week
apart... but then again, they are not part of any story or epic poem, so I
can write them just like I want to... or rather, just like my editors want
to...

Thanks for confirming that. I'll take your word for it... I never saw that
spelling anywhere until recently on this list. The know-it-all in me had a
good mind to correct you people, which apparently would have been egg on my
own face. I do believe, however, that I've seen the word "runometer" in
English somewhere, but most frequently I think it's just called "Kalevala
meter".
Also, I'd suspect that the word "parallelism" should be written like this
in English, with just three L's? In Swedish it would be four.

Well, no way, or, at least, count me out! Scarpa has managed in doing better
comics that Barks, IMO!

Well, no way, or, at least, count me out! Scarpa has managed in doing better
comics that Barks, IMO!
