Hi
As Gemstone has plans to reprint CBL, then they might also have plans to
reprint other sold-out items ? I've seen "Mickey Mouse in Color - Deluxe
Edition" listed at www.fantask.dk as an upcoming item!
Then I would like to know if they have plans to print the "Carl Barks Fine
Art book" again ?
best wishes,
Mads

Carey's Barks-quote and two new ones

CAREY FURLONG to me, 14-06-2003:
> "Yessir! Thrift saves money, and money makes more money!
> You just can't beat my system!"
> - - - - - - -
>
> Too difficult? Then take this quote with a grain of ...

Yes, that's the right answer. (Sigh!)
> Now, how about this one:
> "Oh, Boy! Oh, Boy! Look at'em dive! They're playing tag like school
> kids!
I thought about the dolphins-story of WDC 218, but I was wrong. I expected
scenes in which the nephews complain about going back to school again, but
they were not in this story.
Then I thought about that other story, in which Donald tries to catch
big fishes, giving the nephews a hard time during the last days of their
school vacation.
And there I found the quote:
It's the story in which Donald catches a whale. (WDC 193, panel 4.7.)
Searching for this story, I wasn't aware there are *two* stories in which
Donald gives the nephews a hard time while catching fish for pay. (Though
whales may not count as fish, because they're mammals.) Funny how memory
tries to compress information. Or is it just deleting?
Anyway, here's are two new Barks-quotes, from two different stories:
- - - - - - -
"Here's a guy WALKING, fellas - and he asks how WE got here!"
- - - - - - -
"Well, if you're going"
"to ACT like a horse,"
"we'll TREAT you like a horse!"
- - - - - - -
Maybe this will keep you away for *two* minutes, Carey. :-)
--- Dani?l (wondering if Carey is human, or a search-machine) :-)

Hello Mads,
It wasnt Gemstone that produced this book, it was Another Rainbow (Russ
Cochran/Bruce Hamilton).......
The "Carl Barks Fine Art" book you are asking about were made in
exceptional high quality, and the book won (several) industry-awards for
quality, binding - as I recall. If anyone have more details, please let
me know.
The pictures of the oil paintings in the book were made from the actual
oil paintings - which are spread around the US and possibly other
countries too. The pictures were taken by the 50 different photographers
in the US & Canada and Carl Barks also collaborated with color details
etc. Carl Barks approved the final colors for each picture. The binding
of the book is also very special. The edition is limited to 1875 copies
+ (250 Publisher Proof books). Its SIGNED by Carl Barks.
I do not belive even a reprint was tried, that it could be in such high
quality of the book, and it can certainly not be signed by Carl Barks.
The "Fine Art" book was made by collectors to collectors... So they
really cared about the book, and wasnt just in it for the money....
My conclusion is that there will NOT be a reprint of this book - I
simply dont think anyone will try this, as it will be impossible to have
the same HIGH quality !!

This is probably just a reminder that the original printing of this
volume is still available. I always wondered why this volume does not
sell. It is signed by Barks and Gottfredson, offers a tremdous
production value and displays the best of Gottfredson's Mickey stories
in an ultralarge format and brilliant colors. It is limited to 2.000 (?)
copies. It is not too expensive (I recall $ 250) and still available at
original price of 10 years ago.

There has been a Dutch story about Gladstone being tragic. Somewhere in
the late 1990s or early 2000s. I think it was a tenpager, or thereabouts.
In this story Gladstone is bragging to Donald, about having more luck
than Donald, and therefore having more succes in life, etc. Suddenly,
Donald critically asks if Gladstone has any *friends*. What follows is
an IMHO beautiful scene with an empty looking, *sad* Gladstone.
I found this a very interesting angle on Gladstone as character.
Does someone know which story I'm typing about?

I enjoyed these two very much. Here are the solutions:
"Here's a guy WALKING, fellas - and he asks how WE got here!"
I solved this one quickly. It's from "Way out Yonder" (WDC 262).
The others got there by riding midget motor-bikes.
"Well, if you're going"
"to ACT like a horse,"
"we'll TREAT you like a horse!"
This one was worse. Actually, it's almost a trick
question, since it actually IS a horse - a small colt.
It's from "Days at the Lazy K", WDC 59.
Now can anyone tell me where this quote is from?
"So you'll have to leave RIGHT AWAY, as you'll only be able to
travel by DAYLIGHT!"

Last month and SEVERAL times before, a discussion has been going on whether
the Ducks are birds or mammals. And we've been yabbing the same arguments
over and over again. Today, when I picked up Donald Pocket 271, I actually
find something NEW to add to this debate.
In D 2001-009, "Havanden" (Norwegian title) by Michael T. Gilbert, drawn by
Fecchi, Donald is looking for a sunken treasure. Problem is, he can't afford
the diving equipment he would need to get that treasure up. He starts
thinking "What if I could breathe like a fish..." - an idea that takes him
to Gyro's, where the following conversation finds place (loosely translated
from the Norwegian version):
DD: "So I need a pill that can make me breathe like a fish!"
GY: "Strange you should mention that, Donald... because that's what I've
just been working on! Look!"
Gyro shows Donald an aquarium with a dog swimming in it. Under water.
DD (shocked): "That's the strangest fish I've ever seen!"
Louie: "A medical wonder! How did you do that?"
GY: "Aquapills! One pill lets you breathe under water for a limited time! It
makes mammals able to subtract oxygen from the water - like fish do!"
Only two pages later, Donald takes these pills - and they most certainly
work on him. In my opinion, this is true evidence that Michael Gilbert's
Donald is a mammal.
Oh, by the way: I'm NOT trying to start new arguments and fights over this -
I just thought it was funny to after all these years of eggs seeing a story
stating clearly that Donald is a mammal, and wanted to inform you as I guess
many of you won't read it for a while. Still, he could of course be an
egg-laying mammal (not many of those, though, and ducks are not among them).
Best,
Olaf

Ducks are egg-laying birds. I would find it very strange to see a
duck act like a mammal, getting a baby without a shell around it.
That would be way too much fantasy for me. (Or a morbid, failed
genetic experiment.)
Everyone has their own interest, but I never would have believed that
this subject could be a matter of discussion. Not even as a fantasy.
If people rather want to see humans instead of ducks, then just read
comics with humans or dog-nosed humans or Mickey Mouse.
Just a thought: Maybe the "mammal-duck people" just don't accept that
the Ducks look like *funny animals*, no matter how the Ducks behave?
Maybe the "mammal duck" theory is an attempt to make the ducks look
acceptable for adults? Is this an attempt to say "hey, I'm not just
a collector of funny animals, I'm a collector of cool, heavy stuff"?
An attempt to be taken as a serious, intellectual person? If so, I'd
say it won't work that way. Rather the opposite.

Articles about Donald for Picsou

Hi,
Pascal Pierrey, the editor in chief of the French Picsou Magazine (Uncle $crooge Magazine) asked me a few weeks ago to prepare a series of articles about Donald Duck publications (books and magazines - past and present) accross the world.
I am starting to work on it, but while I have a lot of info on Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Serbia and the US, I am missing material on the following countries :
- Italy
- UK
- Scandinavia
- Finland
- Germany
I need your help ! I need to locate 2 great covers of books or magazines from pre-1950 for each of these 5 countries/regions that have a Donald title and a Donald cover (for example the pre-war Paperino magazine in Italy and an Italian Paperino book from before 1950).
For each of these items I also need to know when it was published, as part of which series, if there are any good anecdotes linked to it,... in short as much info as you may have about it.
Finally, I also need to receive a 300dpi scan of those covers (at my other email address not at this one).
PLEASE, if you are able to help it would be fantastic if you could contact me in the next few days !
Thanks a million in advance !

Do you think that DONALD is a horse? The quote comes from a scene in
which the colt has hypnotized Donald. So far my nitpicking. :-)
BTW. Another Barks story with hypnotism? How many did he make?
I bet that I can mention at least four other ones...

Gemstone: Life and Times?

I was wondering if Gemstone has any future plans to do a single
volume hardcover edition of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa. I
would love to see a complete edition in print with the 12 original chapters plus
his additional chapters and commentary or further analysis. I've always wanted
one book with the 15 chapters or so in sequential order so it looks like one
continuous long story. I know the Europeans have produced great examples of
this. Will Americans have their turn? I believe this book could also sell well
since bookstores would probably love to have it in regular book format. If it
can't be done for sevaral years, I understand (Don Rosa might have more
chapters of L&T by then anyways). Is there any possibility at all?

If my memory serves me right Donalds face is redrawn by the same artist that

(I don't have the book here, but somewhere in my mind there is a rather ugly

The worst replacement drawing of all time in a Barks story appears in
