I also purchased the 2 new Gemstone US and WDC&S issues @
the local comic book stores. I went to the most familiar nearby
store, asked for the new disney - Gemstone comics, and was handed
WDC&S #634. After remembering that I was expecting the latest
US, I asked for that, too. I was told the store was SOLD OUT!
This was shortly after noon; more copies were expected from
Gemstone next Wednesday. So naturally I thought, "Wow, these
comics are SELLING; that's great to keep Gemstone in business!"
But then I heard the store expected Gemstone to ship them 2 copies,
but only one arrived. So I said "You only got 1 US copy from
Gemstone, and you sold it, so now you're SOLD OUT?!"
I then went to another local comic store, which had both US
and WDC&S on the shelf, and bought my US copy there.
Is Gemstone shipping very limited quantities to comic book stores
so there will be lots of reports of being "SOLD OUT!?" which may
generate publicity indicating lots of interest. This reminds me
of a political candidate prefering to schedule his speech in a
small auditorium, which will likely have a capacity audience, rather
than a larger auditorium with more people attending, but not filled.
Best wishes for Gemstone marketing success, so we don't
have another several years like 1984-1986 and 1999-2002.

How nice that some of you got the new issue of WDCS (634) yesterday. None of the *five* local comic shops that I called recieved any. They all ordered them, and all they recieved was issues of Uncle Scrooge (319). Naturally, I did pick up the Uncle Scrooge issue, and found it to be very good (I'll let someone else start the discussion of the actual stories, as I'm not sure I can do so without spoiling the fun of reading these stories for the first time).
I'd love to know when I can get a copy of WDCS634, since the local shops say it was simply omitted from their order. Does anyone know anything about this? Is this kind of distribution going to be the norm, or is this simply a matter of getting things squared away. One local shop told me that they wouldn't be surprised if there were problems every month with books not coming in when they were scheduled.

I guess I would not hesitate to put her into any "Duck/McDuck family
functions, birthdays, anniversaries" that might appear in one of my stories,
but I don't do stories with those sorts of "domestic tranquility" scenes
very often. Besides, I see her as staying in her home in Scotland, not
moving to Duckburg.

Yes, I got that new one, too! This is certainly the golden age of movie
soundtrack music! Small collector-oriented companies are producing *loads*
of archivist-style CDs of great film scores of the 1930's-60's! I can't keep
up with it all! I have stacks sitting on the floor waiting to be listened

Well, I useta' listen to film music while drawing, but for many years now I
have either listened to recorded books or MP3's of old radio shows. But
speaking of a cross-over with music, the radio series I'm listening to now
is a combination of Orson Welles' 1938-45 MERCURY THEATER ON THE AIR and THE
CAMPBELL PLAYHOUSE (pretty much the same show) which is a weekly anthology
series featuring the very same director, producer, writers, and actors as
those who made CITIZEN KANE... but also the same composer, everyone's
favorite, Bernard Herrmann (who also did THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR you
mention, among *many* others)... and each of these radio dramas features
*original* Herrmann music written just for that single show and never heard
again!

This is a repeat of the same comic shoppe boneheadedness that kept Gladstone
only marginally successful. That store owner only *ordered* two issues,
meaning he was only trying to satisfy the wishes of the two customers who
*asked* for the comic, never intending to put any copies on the racks to
display for other potential buyers. Can you imagine a book store that only
sold books under-the-counter to people with the inside-knowledge of the
publishing industry who could request the book prior to publication... and
then were expected to buy it sight-unseen when it arrived?! The average
American never even sees comic books since they are sold almost exclusively
in a few lil' comic shoppes in each town, but with the attitude the shoppes
have to anything that's not a violent superhero, even the customers at these
comic shoppes will *still* not know Disney comics are back since the
storeowners won't purchase copies other than one or two to sell to those few
aged fans who knew to ask. "Who else would want these things? They're DISNEY
comics! Nobody reads those!"
Anyway, don't blame Gemstone for this situation... Gemstone will sell any
store as *many* copies as they order!

I think Gemstone has probably recognized the problem that some of you
are citing about dumb comicbook stores. The staff (Steve Geppi, John Clark)
has talked about getting these comics into Walmart, Barnes and Noble, etc.
Those stores would most definently buy larger quantities of the books than the
typical comicbook store. I was wondering if anyone knew if the prestige format
books will be available at these more recognizable, popular stores or just the
newstand format books coming out in September. Hopefully, the prestige books
can be purchased from say a Barnes and Noble, because their greatness deserves
to be found by other people, especially those persons who normally would never
enter a comicbook store.

I called my favorite comic book store yesterday around noon, and
the gentleman there informed me the new Disney comics had just
arrived, but he hadn't had a chance to get them out of the box
and onto the shelves. ;) As it happened I wasn't able to go get
them until after work, anyway, but it was nice to know they were
there.
And well worth the wait! The colors are deep and vivid, the
extra article by Don Rosa in the back of U$ was a great bonus
(as was the revelation that he and his wife have a cameo in "The
Dutchman's Secret!) and just holding a NEW Disney comic in
ENGLISH in my hands was fantastic! :-D
All the stories were great, and I laughed out loud at the "New
Zoo Brews Ado" story. The Gladstone birthday story was good,
too. My dad loves to golf, so seeing Scrooge and Flintheart hit
the links was a treat, also.
Of course the best part for me was seeing a Don Rosa story in
color, in English, that I hadn't seen thus before! Made my day!
:-D

Missing Duck stories in CBLiC ?
Message 337 -

Hi all
I've read a couple of places, that the stories with Grandma Duck and Daisy
Duck (Daisy's Dairy) were left out of the CBLiC. Apparently the German CBL
has plans to print two albums, entitled:
Oma Duck # 1 (Heft erscheint noch)
Daisy Duck # 1 (Heft erscheint noch)
According to http://www.jlcomicart.de/USBarks.htm
Initially, I figured it might have something to do that Barks did not write
those stories himself, and therefore they were not considered worthy enough
to include. And the fact that they were under preasure might have caused the
exclusion of these stories ?! So, does anybody have something to contribute
on this matter ?
Would it be possible to get Gemstone to complete what was the original
CBLiC, or is their only plan on the CBL matter to reprint the original B/W
series ?
best wishes,
Mads

New Gemstone comics
Message 338 -

I get my comics via a subscription service and thus wouldn't get
the two new Gemstone comics for a few weeks yet, but I could not let
yesterday go by without buying one of the new Gemstone comics! I
picked up Uncle Scrooge #319 and my one word to sum it up is WOW!
Before I could even really look at any of the stories I was highly
impressed by something! One of my biggest complaints about
Gladstone's prestige format comics was that they were bound in such a
way that made them hard to read; they did not open naturally like a
"regular" comic. Well I have this complaint no more! I don't know
what Gemstone is doing different, but now the comic opens up much more
and is much easier to hold and read. So even before I read one story
the comic is getting an "A+" from me!
Inside is an add for Comic Book Marketplace #103 which will have
as its focus Disney comics. There will be an interview with John
Clark about Gemstone and also a history of Disney comics. So
hopefully in it there will be some neat news about some more of
Gemstone's upcoming plans.
As for the issue itself, I have not read Don's "The Dutchman's
Secret" yet as I am "saving" that to read a few days from now. Two of
the other stories in this issue were a 6 page Gyro story and a 4 page
story with Scrooge and Fethry. Both were nice, but nothing fantastic.
I truly loved the last story titled "Family of Fore", a 14 page story
by John Lustig and Vicar. The story involved golf which was a great
start for me. I don't play golf, but stories involving Donald and
golf always seem to work out very well. This time Donald was a
bystander though as Scrooge was the one who had to be good at golf.
The story also features Flintheart Glomgold who is welcome in a Duck
story just about any time. Finally, the writing by John Lustig had
some particularly entertaining phrases, such as "bouncin' baby
carriages", and the name of deceased golf fanatic of the story being
named "Bogey McDivot".
I can't express how excited I am to have Disney comics back! We
Disney comic fans have had to wait over 4 years which was 4 years too
much by my way of thinking! At last they are back though and if US
#319 is any indication, they are back better than ever! (And I
haven't even read Don's story yet! :))

Gemstone shipped whatever quantity the store ordered!
Your comic store had the choice of quantity to order and very likely only
ordered one or two copies.
At $6.95 the store had to "Guess" how many they would sell.
With the number of new titles and old standards to order each month with NO
returns for unsold comics, stores are not likely to order too many extra copies
of comics especially at $6.95 each.
It is your job to tell the store: "Hey are you getting the new Disney comics?
I will buy it when it comes in!"
Most stores also have a pull and hold service, ASK!
It makes it much easier for both you and the store.

The comic stores pick the quanity of the books they order. Since the Gemstone
books are so expensive, the stores simply aren't ordering very many of them
at this point, in fear of losing money. The stores barely make money on new
releases, so they need to order exactly how many they think they will sell.
This can be remedied by ASKING the stores to either put the books on a "pull
list," so you personally get them each month, or order them directly from the
"Previews" catalog. (Unfortunately, you must do this two months ahead.) This
is standard practice for most American comics.
I apologize if everyone knew this prior to this posting, but I hope I've at
least answered a few questions.
By the way, I really enjoyed both of the books, although I *still* think
they're slightly overpriced...

I'm not certain whether I should be saddened or wryly amused at the accounts
of the failure of various list members to obtain the first Gemstone releases.
Why? Because, for the most part, it remains unclear whether or not they are
the victims of shops offering poor service, or whether they could have helped
themselves in this regard. As with most things, I suspect matter falls
somewhere in between.
My shop, Bailey's Comics of Lindenhurst, NY -- go there if you're ever near
Long Island, NY - had both my copy of WDC&S and my copy of UNCLE SCROOGE... and
one copy of each I'd requested for a friend.
Please note that I PRE-ORDERED these through Diamond's PREVIEWS catalogue.
In this poor business climate, it would be wise for each of you to do the same.
Just as I previously suggested with the "Free Comic Book Day Donald Duck
Adventures", DON'T rely on your retailer to automatically order copies. Those
days vanished with the unfortunate speculator craze of a decade ago.
A retailer is not going to risk purchasing a number of relatively expensive
items that might just sit on his racks indefinitely. So, for anyone who hasn't
done so, take the initiative and pre-order your Gemstones.
It would also help matters if you were able to form some sort of "regular
relationship" with your retailer as well. That way he or she feels more
comfortable and secure in financing your purchases in advance (...which, let's face
it, is exactly what they do!).
My retailer sees me each week, for a wider variety of comics, and has no
doubt that I will be there when the $ 6.95 (x 4) American Dollars are due for my
Gemstones. I realize this is not always easy to do -- depending on the
retailer and/or the "other comics interests" of the individual customer... BUT IT
WILL NEVER HURT!
Indeed, my retailer did order an extra copy or two for the racks, since he
KNOWS he is already assured of a minimum copy sale to me. And who knows, as a
regular, your retailer may even offer you a "good customer discount" or other
special privilege. So, unless your retailer is a total "doorstop" (...and some
of them CAN BE!), please take my advice -- and pre-order your Gemstones!
It's a win for you, a win for your retailer... and, best of all in the "bigger
picture", it's a win for Gemstone!
Joe Torcivia.

WDCS shipping problem

Apparently WDCS didn't ship to a lot of places - my
Maryland comic store, Big Planet Comics, told me that
it hadn't shipped from the warehouse in Memphis
(they're soooo glad that Diamond consolidated it's
shipping a few years ago), and that it would be
shipped next week. I think this happened to a lot of
us, judging from the list and the calls I made trying
to find one.
