continued to glue smaller circles on top of each other. When I was finished
with several hilloks, I filled the gaps with clay. When the clay was dry, I
could glue all the tiny coins on the hillocks. Finally, I painted alle the
coins gold.

Wow, this model is really impressive. When I saw the first picture
with the outside I thought it was really good work, but when seeing
the other pictures with the interior, all the small chairs and tables
and especially the vault with it's thousands of coins I couldn't
really believe it. Mats Gullikstad must be very patient and very
skilful to build such a detailed model. So I just can say: "Wow!"

have done just that, utterly and completely! :-p
The piece really "speaks" for itself.
To Mats:
If your mother/father ever wants you to get rid of your model, please
do...I'm sure some Disney duck museum would really enjoy having it! ;-P
And...do you plan to be an architect? Or was making this incredibly accurate
model just a whim?

Tomorrow in the two "Introduction to Literature" classes I teach, I will
actually be able to incorporate the ducks and the genius of Don Rosa! I'm
giddy with anticipation!
In the class, we're discussing Samuel Taylor's Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." I
had small groups looking at the poem on Monday, and they seemed to find it
virtually incomprehensible. As I tried to explain difficult parts of the
poem to them, I got off into talking about Tralla La! When I came home that
evening, I quickly pulled out Rosa's "Return to Xanadu." Reading back
through the comic, it struck me that page 6 serves as a perfect visual
accompaniment to a discussion of the story! The ducklings quote the poem,
there's a beautiful picture of the river Alph, and the ducklings even share
background info on the poem. Anyway, I've put together a spiffy handout
that will help my students understand and visualize Coleridge a bit better
and will also introduce them to the work of Don Rosa and duck comics. Thank
you, Mr. Rosa! If you had just managed to include something about
Coleridge's opium dream... :)

I wanted to say two things here! First of all, my copies of DONALD DUCK AND
FRIENDS and MICKEY MOUSE AND FRIENDS arrived in the mail yesterday, and I am
a very satisfied customer! I saw much to commend in both comics. I loved
the funny characterization of Goofy in "X-Goofs" and the whole parody of the
X-Men. Hearing Goofy stress over repression tickled me to death! I found
the return of Launchpad AND Doofus in "The Fall Guy" most welcome. Janet
Gilbert seems to have a nice understanding of Launchpad especially. I found
reading a Mike Barrier duck comic really exciting! I loved Sandwich Sam's
lashing out, and Daisy, Scrooge, and Gladstone's appearances in the story
were really choice. I was really entranced with "The Fighting Sword of
Shambor." I think I can see without hyperbole that I have never been so
blown away by the coloring in a comic book. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed
the Block's offbeat morality tale, "Tangled Dreamcatchers." Please forgive
my ranting here, but as a fan stressed over the declining fortunes of the
comic book in America, I really want the two cheaper comics to be extra
special. I think this month's issues are exceptional enough to grab ahold
of new fans and jump start a Disney comic revival in the US. I just hope
that the comics can find folks outside of the obsessive collector market.
Thing no. 2: Why does Pat Block no longer draw the comics he and his wife,
Shelley, write? As someone who has always dreamed of creating duck comics
but has no artistic talent whatsoever, I can't imagine being content to let
others draw my stories (if I was great artist that Pat Block is). I
apologize if the answer to this question is common knowledge amongst the
rest of you. My interest in comics flagged a little when I was in college,
and I was quite surprised to see that Block was no longer drawing his
stories when my interest was revived.

Actually, Hubbard continued to appear in American Disney comics after he had joined the overseas program. I was plowing thru a stack of 1970s WDC&S (purchased at a con) last night and noted a new Hubbard-drawn SCAMP story that appeared in an issue published in 1972.
