Well, I will leave any detailed reports, if anyone wants them, about my
activities at the convention to other DCML members like Harry, Blasco, and
especially Luca Boschi who was one of the organizers of the whole affair.
They are much better at telling what was going on -- I'm too caught up in
the whirl of activity and too-much-attention, always in a fluster of trying
to be everything to all the people who deserve my every ounce of attention,
but never succeeding even 5%, and always worried that I end up just seeming
as rattled and unfocused as I feel.
But there were a few interesting aspects that I wrote of in a message to
Byron Erickson in Denmark when he wrote and asked if I was home yet... I
reported one event to him that had a Danish "connection", and I told the
story of the robbery since it was like something that might happen to
Donald. It will be very simple for me to copy-over part of that message to
the ML, since you've inquired. Here:
----------------------------
This was about the best trip ever. The convention was in the city's castle
overlooking Naples and the Bay and Vesuvius and Capri. A HUGE castle and the
convention occupied the main floor with massive stone hallways and 20-30
foot ceilings. Since Paperino and Paperone are the most popular comics in
Italy and Magica is the darling of Naples, the entry hall to the convention
held
the display of my art -- there was a 2-story
color blow-up of that cover of Magica I did for "Forget It!", and every page
of "A Little Something Special" plus the script plus all the various Lo$
covers and more all individually framed around the halls and room. After
that there was a massive display of original art of all types including
things like the world's oldest page of comic art (a Yellow Kid) and a "Krazy
Kat" Sunday hand-colored by Herriman as a gift for someone.
The other guests like Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada and millionaire
cartoonist Jim Lee surely thought they were on the Bizarro World as they
were supplanted as the superstars that
everyone wanted to see and touch by a mere Donald Duck artist!
But we arrived in Naples 6 days before the convention to see the area.
During the first walk through the city from the hotel, in the first 5
minutes, about 20 steps into the Spanish section, a pursesnatcher on a
motorscooter stole my wife's purse. He really did a professional job! Riding
his scooter with one hand, goodly speed, he slashed and grabbed the purse
with the other hand, apparently using a sharp knife, but never even touched
my wife's coat! Anyway, no big deal, we just went back to the nearby
hotel and made some calls to freeze a credit card, and that was all
there was to that... until the police got involved.
The hotel desk clerk called the police and they suggested we go to the
police station to fill out a report, even though I didn't see any
point to it. But they put us in the back seat of a police car (very
uncomfortable, no room, hard plastic seats, no door handles, etc.) and
drove us through twisty streets in the dark and dropped us off at a
station across town... then left. There was one person at the station
(in street clothes -- a detective? A suspect?) who spoke one word of
English and gave my wife an English language report to fill out. When
she was done, he simply motioned that we could leave. But I didn't
know where we were or how to get back to the hotel! The guy spoke his
one word -- "taxi?" But I said "WE DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY! WE WERE
ROBBED!" and he shrugged. I was gonna wait for another polizia car to
return, but I had no idea when that would happen and it was getting late...
and we were all but crowded out of the tiny polizia station by a small herd
of transvestites who came in to report some mischief done to one of their
members, no pun intended.
So I tried to find my way through the dark
streets without a map back in the direction I thought the hotel was...
and we got lost quickly. It was rather scary, especially after already
being robbed once! Finally a police car passed and I stopped them and
we tried to explain to more non-English speaking police... but after a
long delay where they must have called the station, another Polizia car came
and took us back to the hotel. That filled the entire first
afternoon/evening of the trip! Not a good start! But it was much
better after that! We stayed away from the police and walked around
with the pickpockets and cutpurses where we were safer.
I was so much the center of attention that it was reported in headlines in
the next
day's newspaper, I assume by someone at the polizia station who notifies the
press of "celebrity crimes" (since we didn't tell anyone). The headlines
said things like "Consort of Don Rosa Robbed in Naples" and "Don Rosa Visits
Naples, Is Victim of Beagle Boy on Scooter" and like that. Heh heh.
One sidetrip with a Danish "connection" I need to tell you about -- one day
I was given a special VIP
trip to Vesuvius. The Italian Park service wanted to use me and Magica for
publicity so they held a press conference and a (copy) art display of my
stuff and of Magica's history at a restored villa in Herculaneum. The press
conference was really huge and lasted an hour or so while the Park director
talked about the Park (I guess)... I just sat there. Then they held a big
buffet lunch for everybody who wanted to attend. Next they took us on a hike
into the crater of the old volcano, where the general public is not allowed,
for a musical/theatric performance...
then a ride up to the summit of Vesuvius while all the other Park visitors
had to hike those steep few miles. I had many press conferences or special
tours or such all week, but the reason I mention this one is that in the
crowds on the very rim of Vesuvius there was a tourgroup of *Danish* college
students who recognized me and swarmed me for autographs. I should send you
the unedited tape of this trip, but I'm SO sure you'd want to sit for 5+
hours and watch it.
------------------------
(That ends my report to Byron.)
But while I won't go into more reporting of my activities at the show, I
want to mention one other person: ML member Blasco Pizapia, who is a Disney
Duck artist living in Milan, but who grew up in Naples, offered to be our
personal guide and translator while we visited, and I naturally accepted.
One *great* benefit of being who I am is that when I visit Europe, wherever
I go there are Duckfans who will be best pals and be delighted to be (free!)
guides and translators for us ignorant Americans who can't communicate with
anyone... no other tourist has such a gift as being treated like this -- and
one of the greatest benefits is that this always results in being invited to
an "average European home" for "a homecooked European meal" just like a
member of the family... and that's something that NO other tourist gets, and
I appreciate it deeply!
But this trip I met Blasco, who instantly became one of the best friends
I've ever had, right up there with local bwah, ol' Dan Shane. I can never
repay his hospitality, constant loyal help, and all the time (and $!) he
spent driving us around Naples and being our guide/translator in Pompeii, at
Vesuvius and on the Isle of Capri, as well as my helper during the entire
convention!!! And also a homecooked meal at his parents' home! It couldn't
have been better!!!
Anyway, to answer your other question, I plan to soon do a Naples adventure
with $crooge & Magica, similar in spirit and scope to the Helsinki adventure
I did, and I hope Blasco will be my collaborator on that project! I will
incorporate some of the things I saw, and I'll try to use the pursesnatching
story as well.
But I'd still like to see the expression on the pursesnatcher's face when he
picked up (stole?) the morning newspaper and found out whose wife he robbed.

And new pages are being added every day. Let us just enjoy this enormous
body of work, and let duck fans everywhere feel free to decide which
stories they want to include in THEIR private duck universes.

As for myself: When I read a Barks story, I visit Duckburg. I know the rest
of the city is there, outside the panel borders. Just up the road from
Donald's house is Gyro's workshop. The money bin is downtown, a couple of
miles away. Daisy's house is over on the other side of town.

Some of the newer stories by Vicar give me the same feeling, so I include
them in my universe. He draws Duckburg almost exactly the way Barks did.
The same applies to a few of the Dutch artists.

However, I NEVER get the 'right' Duckburg feeling from a Rosa story. The
art and tone of the stories are too different.

This is not to say that I don't enjoy Don's stories, I do! 'A matter of
some gravity' is the second funniest comic book story I have ever read. And
although it may sound like a paradox, I included 'The Life of $crooge' in
my universe. Somehow, Don's old-fashioned drawing style with shading and
lots of details seems right for this 'historical document'.

As far as I understand it, he'll finish Bone before he starts the actual
work on Captain Marvel. Except for that drawing in the JLA/JSA Secret
Files, obviously.

Lars
Olivier
Hi everyone!

1/ Naples / Napoli
First, my belated thanks to Harry for posting his pictures from the Naples Comic Con:
Thank you very much, Harry!

2/ Albums
Gary:
>>>They're called albums after the fashion of European publishers to refer to their volumes of
>>>such features as Asterix and Lucky Luke as "albums". (At least, that's
>>>what the promoters putting these books into the English-speaking
>>>markets call them - I've no idea what they may be called in any of the
>>>European languages.)
Again, my apologies for replying only now. I kept the message to reply but forgot.
That is indeed how we call the Tintin, Ast?rix, Lucky Luke, ... books.

3/ Guests
Sorry, I don't remember who mentioned him (and don't feel like going-- nor have time to go-- through all the messages): I'm not sure wehther Alan Moore would be interested in writing a ducks story; if he did, it would probably be interesting, and surely along the lines of Don Rosa stories, a reflection on the ducks driven by logic (what would be the consequences of..., howcome..., why..., what oes it mean to be a talking duck, ...)
He might make-- and may have already made-- a reference to the ducks in another comic. He did such a tribute to Walt Kelly in Swamp Thing, chapter 6 of "Love and Death" ("Pog"; art by Shawn McManus; "The Saga of the Swamp Thing" # 32, January 1985; reprinted in DC Comics Vertigo's "Swamp Thing" book 2 (1990).
Nils:
Could you take a picture of your painting, please? I'm curious to see Donald drawn that way. Nothing fancy, just clear enough so we can make out the painting.

4/ Van Horn
I love Van Horn's stories, especially his ten-pagers. Good as they may be in both formats, I think Don Rosa is at his best writing adventures, and Van Horn doing ten-pagers. His very lively art & dialogue are perfectly appropriate to the comedy genre. It's another kind of Donald, and I like it.
As for Rumpus turning out to be Scrooge's half-brother, Sigvald, I don't like the idea, but I wouldn't say "This is definitive evidence that William Van Horn is *not* as true a successor to Barks as Don Rosa". Van Horn doesn't betray Barks' character since Barks' stories never mentioned Scrooge's parents; Van Horn is expanding the on the universe, just as Don Rosa does.

5/ Square Eggs
I liked you square egg investigation, Sigvald. Yet, as Theresa pointed out, what about the ducks? If the ratio duck/square egg is the same as that of human/regular egg, and square eggs are about the same size as regular eggs, does this mean the ducks are about our size (as in Disneyland)?
I think they're smaller too, like Hobbits.

6/ OT
Sigvald:
>>>I did never mean to insult Monsieur Gilles Maurice or any French by referring a current observation of US
>>>attitudes. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused for Monsieur Gilles Maurice or any other
>>>French readers of the DCML.

No offense taken-- as much as it may surprise you Gilles: it seemed clear to me in Sigvald's message that he was *referring* to the point of view of *some* people only, and not directly attacking anyone.
One thing however really bothered me: the syllogism leading to "My guess is thus that Don Rosa for the time being, would prefer to Work for Gemstone before Picsou"-- a ridiculous assumption (whether you actually made that assumption or not, Sigvald, the fact is, it read like you did).
There was no need to reply-- only Mr Rosa was entitled to reply.
I didn't want to broach this way off-topic subject, but I felt like I had to reply to Gilles' & Sigvald's replies.

7/ Gemstone
Gary & John:
It is naturally way too early for such decisions, but maybe the possibility has already been studied at Gemstone.
Besides new Albums (Keno Don Rosa, William Van Horn, Floyd Gottfredson, Al Taliaferro, Daan Jippes, ...), would it be possible for Gemstone to make another Barks paintings book (with a deluxe and a cheaper version), and to reprint the original Barks Library (since Russ Cochran works with Gemstone)?
Another suggestion: "Covers" books-- "Barks Covers", "Don Rosa Covers", "Daan Jippes Covers", ...

To conclude, my belated thanks (again) to Per, for maintaining the list!

Best wishes,

Olivier

PS: I'll try and make another "MM Strips Notes" update soon--- have you seen the one I made on Monday 17?

A new book containing Barks' paintings and lithographs. That would be
something!
I also like the idea of books or albums dedicated to covers. I hope these
ideas will be considered!

Eta Beta
Olivier and all

The mention of the "Pog" Swamp Thing episode (which I love
immensely) by Alan Moore only goes to reinforce my idea that
he *could* work with Disney characters, if he wanted, of
course.

Also, I used to love that short series of a few years ago,
"The Spirit New Adventures", where the most various artists
and writers (including Moore and, I guess, Gaiman) tackled
Will Eisner's character, while Will Eisner himself did a
nice little crossover with Dave Sim, that "Spirit vs.
Cerebus" which prompted me to offer a similar idea with
Donald Duck.

And I obviously have to mention the "Spirit Jam", which
every serious Don Rosa collector surely have... :-)

This is all idle talk, anyway, as much as I like the idea,
I doubt Gemstone (or any other publisher) could see it as
feasible.

Still, a "Guest Star Corner", every now and then, would be
nice...

Cheers!

In response, I think the idea of an Elseworlds series would be magnificent. Obviously, I don't mean make a comic devoted solely to Ducks Elseworlds, but a series in the Lo$ sense. To me, this could be done by one artist with a good 8-12 ideas of different elseworlds, or it could be various artists Elseworld theories.
However it would work, I think it is a great idea that could you use some serious looking into.

The above is the first correct reaction I've seen to Sigvald's latest faux
pas. But it seems to compel me to reply by making my silence obvious. Okay.
I wanted to stay OUT of this. I have asked Sigvald in private messages to
*please stop* making his outrageous
assumptions-that-something-indicates-something-else. He is one of my biggest
fans, and I get rather embarrassed! I was flabbergasted that he would seem
to be implying, which someone might infer was based on private knowledge,
that I had the absurd feeling for the French or for the editor of PICSOU
that he described. But as outta-line as I thought he was, I saw nothing in
his message to offend anyone but MOI. I thought it was quite obvious that he
was referring to, not agreeing with, the attitude that many or perhaps most
Americans have towards France right now... and brother, don't fool yourself,
they *really do*... and even Sigvald had nothing to do with it. Blame
politicians on both sides. But I was gonna just ignore the comment -- I
think I've done all I can to try to dissuade Sigvald from making these
drastic assumptions or to constantly insult other writers and artists who
don't make their stories *exactly* like I do, or the fans who like variety
and are not single-minded. But we're gonna just hafta get used to him. He is
a very sweet guy in person, but just too big a fan... he is "socially
challenged" in learning how to address a group of people. I like him because
I've met him and corresponded with him for years.... but if I only knew the
Sigvald that writes messages to this ML, I think I'd be ready to block out
his messages myself. It's like a different person.
As regards Gemstone and PICSOU, I just had a long message from the editor of
PICSOU about an hour ago, discussing his plans to have me do a new series of
"pin-ups" and other projects. Again, *regardless of Sigvald's assumption*,
Pascal Pierrey is a huge Duckfan (and Rosa fan, if I may be allowed, just to
contradict the assumption) and he has never left his position as editor of
PICSOU. But a few years back he was given the extra duty of editing LE
JOURNAL DE MICKEY as well, an increase in workload of about 500%, so he'd
had no time to give certain matters close attention for those years. But now
he's back to editing *only* PICSOU and we might get the show back on the
road.
As for Gemstone, I'll do covers for them when they need them (though they
already have all the Euro covers I've done for all the stories of mine
they're using), but I actually see *no reason* to do new stories for
Gemstone. Why penalize them like that? They need every cent they can hold
onto to make this new enterprise the success we all want it to be, so why
would they pay me thousands of dollars to create a new story when I can
create that same story for Egmont or PICSOU and Gemstone would then get it
for FREE, perhaps even already *colored*!

That much is pretty funny. But then...

Okay, hold it! Is this a joke? Are you trying to top Sigvald?
I am not in favor of this whole mess into which the world has been pushed by
that sub-grade moron who shouldn't even BE our president, as well as by
wrong-headed European attitudes. However, to compare it to the Nazi
blitzkrieg on Poland is crossing into even more outrageously idiotic
comments. Obviously, NONE OF THIS is proper material for discussion in this
ML!!! Please just DROP IT!!!

Sorry, Blasco!!! I was just rereading my report on Napoli, and in my "rave
