Hi
I returned from a great vacation in Rome yesterday. Before I went there
I only read dcml 470 with Rodney's message about Duckburg in Denmark.
I'm sorry if I have not expressed myself clearly. I hope I didn't say
duckburg was here, I've certainly never been there. Since 1990 or so,
the danish publisher has used the fact that Duckburg is in America.
In Germany on the other hand Duckburg lies in Germany, which causes
some problems from time to time. I eg. heard of a publication of Don's
King Scrooge story which was translated into telling fairy-tale facts
instead of the correct years in the original.
I'll tell more of my trip to Rome in one of my next mails to the dcml.

I won't go over the links & pages, it's too much work and not that much fun.
Finding pages I don't know is fun, but not when they appear to be ripped from
someone else's site.
Doing a "Links" page is fine.
Making a "Links" site (a webliography) would be great.
The problem is your page is a collection of links & copied pages which at first look
like they're all your work (albeit with different layouts) when they are not.
It might be an clumsy attempt at a webliography, which everyone would understand,
and mistakes and unclear links would naturally be forgiven.
Yet there have been messages on the DCML which made it clear what to do
to correct such mistakes, and this "update" hints that you've paid no heed to them.
It is therefore highly ironical to read on the page you linked us to today:
"The Disney comics mailing list is a mailing list on Disney comics which is closely
associated to these pages."
True, at first sight, the page you linked us to today looks like an improvement:
links are sorted per country.
BUT--
1/ The layout looks very much like that of INDUCKS or another site I know.
I haven't checked and won't bother to.
2/ At the top of the page, if you go to the "Next Page", you'll land on Livia!
3/ As Francesco noted while I was typing this, the bottom of the page is
ripped from *Soren*'s site, with *your* name shamelessly *substituted* for his!!
Conclusion: that's no clumsy attempt or beginner's mistake as might have been thought!
It is sheer *robbery*!
I haven't had the dubious honor of finding my obscure little site grafted into your pages
and won't waste my time checking, and anyway I think it allows me even more to speak

It takes a lot of work and dedication to make a web site: designing the layout,

Rainbow, it is signed in pencil with PP then the number of the series.
What does PP mean?"
Does someone know the answer to this question?
(Maybe "PP" means something like "plate production"?)

The name of the song was "The Screaming Cowboy". The words were "Oh, bury me
thar with my battered git-tar A-screamin' my heart out fer yew!" It appeared
in WDC&S 137, Feb., 1952.

At Egmont, at least, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck both live in the same
Duckburg (or Andeby). They're just in different parts of the city, and tend
not to run into each other anymore (so crossovers are discouraged -- even to
the point where I couldn't let a crazy inventor in a Mickey Mouse story have
a picture on his wall of himself shaking hands with Gyro Gearloose). That's
official. Apparently, Mickey doesn't get around very often to the part of
town where you can see the Money Bin and the statue of Cornelius Coot --
either that, they're always outside the frame. I've heard vague hints lately
that Mouseton (which I believe first appeared in the Disney-published comics
of the early 1990s) may be revived as a separate place where Mickey and his
friends live, but no official word as yet. Until then -- same city, same
pig-faced mayor, etc.
Green Irish, Orange Irish:
I don't know how widespread the search for this story is, but several weeks
ago, I got a note at my Toonopedia address (http://www.toonopedia.com, by
the way, if you're interested in running barefoot through a vast repository
of toonological knowledge) asking this very same question. I wasn't able to
come up with anything. Now, I see it's being discussed here. I haven't been
following this list as closely as one ought, so I don't know how it came up.

I just reread an old Gatto story about a foretune-teller who had this
minor limitation, that he was only able speak about the present, yet
with absolute precision and detail.
Reading this very nice story, I wonder how much time we spend on
current events in the Disney comics arena. When will Don Rosa get his
next story published, and how was that inspired (or not) by late Carl
Barks. And how do we buy Carl Barks oils on ebay?! So much digging in
the past or very near future and no investigation in the real future
that *must* come, independantly of Rosa and Barks. Like finding
ourselves chosing among various cellulars, one being more delicious
than the other, yet without any interest in where this will bring us.
It seems as if no one really cares. New artists like the Italian
Fabio Celoni amongst others are simply ignored even (apparently) by the
Italians themselves. Why is that?!
One might claim, that Celoni sucks(!) well, I couldn't agree less, but
the fact that no one on this list tells us so is strange. In Italy we
have at least 10 artists that produce and create art, which go far
beyond what Rosa & Co. could ever hope to achieve in both story telling
and "plain" art. There is so much great art here and so much fun and
brilliant jokes and...and... but it all comes down to "what's the colour
of money" and whether Duckburg is placed in California or Peru. I do
myself find these topics interesting for academic reasons as well, but
what happened to critisism on newer artists. Are they simply ignored,
since they don't fit in the Rosa mainstream or what?! (Sorry, Don, this
has nothing to do with you personally or professionally)
Some four years back, Ole wrote to me, that the Americans should be
excused in this context, since they never had the change to read
stories where Scrooge's money bin was placed elsewhere, like e.g. in the
middle of the city and not on the hill. However, thing are not static,
and especially not as far as Disney comics are concerned.
Things *do* develop, but this development is not reflected on this
mailing list IMO. Do we have debates on new characters developed by the
Egmont team? Nope! Do we try to analyse or at least comment on new
trends in comic creation. Not the slightest bit. It's all about poor
translations or microscopic details about dates, colours, you name it...

I'm very happy to listen about your ambition as a future Disney
writer...since I agree there are space to better Disney histories! I think
that a creator that really like the stuff he is doign can do incredible
things! Special and more creative things, since he want's to do somethign he
will like to read!
I'm a fan of Barks and Rosa too, but not only of then! I like the Disney
comics in general, specially the italian production, specially on the
graphic sense, and, off couse, the brazilian production! I can say lot's of
names, but I don't have so much time to do it (What I''m doing here?! I have
lot's of colegge work to do!!! Fernando, get out of this computer!!!)! And
it will not go to any place!;)
This month, makes ONE YEAR that my first Disney historie was published, and
I'm happy fot this, not so happy, since the brazilian production stoped
again some months ago, but still happy! The day that the Abril's editor sad
to me that he liked a lot(?!) my first Z? Carioca historie and that he will
publish, was the most incredible thing during al my life!

I read the last mail from Søren Krarup Olesen. Søren, you have a very good
point.
But, I must say: When I read a story about the Ducks, I try to knit it all
together in my head. I try to get a full picture of it all together.
Therefor, it feels WRONG to BELIEVE in a story which says something opposite
than many other stories. I have to decide in my mind which version I will
believe in. One good example is the old European myth about $crooge and
Grandma being brother and sister. When I first saw Don Rosa's Duck Family
Tree, I had to decide in my mind which version I should believe in (is she
his sister or his sister's mother-in-law?). In that example, and in very
many other examples, I have decided to support the Don Rosa version. This is
because I know that Don Rosa does extremely good research on every story he
makes! Therefor, I support the Duck Family Tree. I support the entire story
"Life of $crooge". I support the fact that $crooge died in the 1960's, which
HAS TO mean that every story which contains computers, modern airplanes,
modern cars, cable TV etc. does NOT fit into MY Disney Universe! I read the
stories. I am amused by the stories. But they're fairy tales. Things that
COULD HAVE happened, but are impossible. (the same about stories with both
ducks and mice - in my head there exists no Mickey, no Goofy...)
But if the story does not break my Duck Universe picture - of course I'm
open for that the story could have happened in MY Duck Universe (the
universe inside my head)! I try not to exclude a story just because it's not
Don Rosa, but he IS the best story writer. I miss more stories about
journeys to distant countries. I miss more stories with REFERENCES to other
stories (either it is Barks, Don Rosa, Van Horn, Marco Rota or anybody). And
I miss more stories that take place in the mid-50's. This is not personal to
anybody, but that's what a story needs to become good - according to me. And
that is why so many small (Italian) creators fall in the shadows of for
example Don Rosa. Don Rosa is not good only BECAUSE he's Don Rosa! But he
amazes us again and again and again... and through history, I've found only
a few Don Rosa stories that don't fit into my Disney Universe (example:
"From Duckburg to Lillehammer" is an impossible story with the time frames I
operate with).
When it comes to new persons, it's always interesting to read about a new
character. But at the end of the story, I must decide whether this character
fits into my head. Example: I have read a few stories (I believe it is
William Van Horn?) where $crooge has an former un-known half brother. At the
end, I have decided that I can NOT believe in the "fact" that Fergus McDuck
has been cheating on his Downy. This is the kind of decisions I make every
time I read about a new introduced figure. If nothing breaks with logic, I
let the person stay in my head.
BUT; the universe in my head is in many ways similar with the Barks/Rosa
Universe. Therefor, TUSEN TAKK SØREN! I will try to become a better reader
of all Duck stories now. And I hope such things will be discussed on the
list in the future.

But, I must say: When I read a story about the Ducks, I try to knit it all
together in my head. I try to get a full picture of it all together.
Therefor, it feels WRONG to BELIEVE in a story which says something opposite
than many other stories. I have to decide in my mind which version I will
believe in. One good example is the old European myth about $crooge and
Grandma being brother and sister. When I first saw Don Rosa's Duck Family
Tree, I had to decide in my mind which version I should believe in (is she
his sister or his sister's mother-in-law?). In that example, and in very
many other examples, I have decided to support the Don Rosa version. This is
because I know that Don Rosa does extremely good research on every story he
makes! Therefor, I support the Duck Family Tree. I support the entire story
"Life of $crooge". I support the fact that $crooge died in the 1960's, which
HAS TO mean that every story which contains computers, modern airplanes,
modern cars, cable TV etc. does NOT fit into MY Disney Universe! I read the
stories. I am amused by the stories. But they're fairy tales. Things that
COULD HAVE happened, but are impossible. (the same about stories with both
ducks and mice - in my head there exists no Mickey, no Goofy...)
But if the story does not break my Duck Universe picture - of course I'm
open for that the story could have happened in MY Duck Universe (the
universe inside my head)! I try not to exclude a story just because it's not
Don Rosa, but he IS the best story writer. I miss more stories about
journeys to distant countries. I miss more stories with REFERENCES to other
stories (either it is Barks, Don Rosa, Van Horn, Marco Rota or anybody). And
I miss more stories that take place in the mid-50's. This is not personal to
anybody, but that's what a story needs to become good - according to me. And
that is why so many small (Italian) creators fall in the shadows of for
example Don Rosa. Don Rosa is not good only BECAUSE he's Don Rosa! But he
amazes us again and again and again... and through history, I've found only
a few Don Rosa stories that don't fit into my Disney Universe (example:
"From Duckburg to Lillehammer" is an impossible story with the time frames I
operate with).
When it comes to new persons, it's always interesting to read about a new
character. But at the end of the story, I must decide whether this character
fits into my head. Example: I have read a few stories (I believe it is
William Van Horn?) where $crooge has an former un-known half brother. At the
end, I have decided that I can NOT believe in the "fact" that Fergus McDuck
has been cheating on his Downy. This is the kind of decisions I make every
time I read about a new introduced figure. If nothing breaks with logic, I
let the person stay in my head.
BUT; the universe in my head is in many ways similar with the Barks/Rosa
Universe. Therefor, TUSEN TAKK SØREN! I will try to become a better reader
of all Duck stories now. And I hope such things will be discussed on the
list in the future.
